That end scene has happened to me - tree had just safely hit the ground and I didn’t know that a large dead branch broke off and luckily fell right beside me. You’re smart to wear hard hats. Putting that machinery to hard work is what they’re designed for and good to see. Very physical work, watch your back. Thanks for the upload, cheers

Ya - a smaller tree sling shotted a large branch back at us - a killer for sure...in the next video coming out youll see it still moving when it lands just behind the stump.

Good to see one of these old units in action. In the late 80’s and early 90’s my dad wrecked, rebuilt and sold old skidders. I spent many weekends in the shop swapping engine accessories, bell housings and oil pans so customers could leave with a ready to drop in Detroit. Also did lots of rebuilds on 440 Deere’s. We used our 540A Deere with a ripper for clearing and ripping right of ways for plowing in natural gas lines. My dad bought it in 78 and was in service until 2016. Last a long time if they are not abused, fairly certain every component was rebuilt multiple times. We are now retired from this work kind of work. Bought a Deere 440B with a powershift for skidding small timber on my land, mostly cleaning up deadfall. Bought it non running and patched the engine and serviced the winch. After the first winter had to pull the front diff to replace the front diff lock line. Won’t pull as much as yours but it’s a fairly fast machine and very easy to run / get on and off. If you can’t find parts for yours we may still have some out here in Central Alberta.

If the old girl starts running "rich" or real smoky then its probably not getting enough air to burn its fuel so on the side of the engine near the back you should find where the blower is bolted on. Take it off and you will find a screen that covers where the air gets into the engine there... it will be caked with oil and trash that gets past the air filter. Just wash it out good an reassemble it. no gaskets or other to worry about. I think you should just do it once in a while anyway an double the power and love how its starting better then. Oh, if when falling a tree in that snow and ice an feel nervous about splitting at the trunk where cutting down..... take a pass chain.... a chain thats about two feet long made from five sixteenths or three eights.. like that an has a hook on one end of it. Use it to go around the tree and if you have enough, go around a few times to take up slack and not hit with saw from hanging down. Once its wrapped, cut below it like usual and if it splits, that chain will catch it and keep it from killing you.

Ill check that, we had the rack set and it has the old S type injectors...didnt want to spend the money to change them....does smoke a lot! My clark had N type and it wasn't near that bad. Pretty sure one cylinder is down on compression...but probably like that since 1978...will keep running it! Ill shoot a vid of that screen if I can find it. Thanks!

@@rollingupmysleeves Its between the blower and the engine... I have seen screen door screen in there and it wears out quick and into the engine it goes. Not a good thing and running one without one is a bad idea. You'll find it

Very funny flightless Duck like wobbly running at the end like a super delayed reaction after the tree is already on the ground it came from. Funny have a look at it again would be great material for the bloopers reel.

lol, yes it would seem like that..but what you didn't see was the top of another tree being catapulted towards us..that's why we keep sharp even after the tree has hit the ground. He has my duck wobble genes...enough to get him out of the way and we can outrun our mothers if needed....just barely though.

@@rollingupmysleeves ,Yes this kinda of farming or tree harvesting is Always dangerous including suiting up for the day in those heavy insolated jacket pants combo, even with all the safety gear weighing someone down your definitely right always be looking everywhere for the danger lurking. I was in Heavy scale World wide production logging from 1994 thru 2001 and & heard all types of fatalities almost daily from Japanese destined Wood chips for Fuji Photo paper too Bathroom tissue , Charmaine Super thick 3 ply is what I choose for one small step for man and One giant leap for the better & complete wipe. Warning never use toilet paper if there at Tim Hortons or Macdonald's you can See through the less than a ply of ornament paper it's there by law and not for anything else , Expensive Coffee and Truck in Non fresh doughnuts other than the Bimbits. Ive fixed up a few old skidders, mostly timberjacks ! Eventually you get the bugs out of them. If you could afford to put a new set of 10mm tractor ice pick chains on the rear tires, she will really pull.

Brother and I had a tree farmer b4 we got our Jack. And man it was light in the ass. Not a problem when hooked up to a few . But getting up and going down some hills empty was interesting at times.

@@rollingupmysleeves yea thats exactly what I mean. We eventually up graded to a newer Jack, but it did it's job while we had it. I see yours doesn't have an ash pan on the back either. We put ice pics on the back tires and rings chains on the front as well and it still wouldn't back up very good. Just really light in the back.

Yours might be diferent but the skidder we had we would go to the junkard and get dodge np435 transmissions for about $100 and put them in it because we could not afford to buy the actual replacement. Sometimes we could get a couple years out of a transmission. Best I can remember your skidder looks identical to the one we had.

@@rollingupmysleeves I didn’t think driving a skidder and using a chainsaw would look good on a chest mount, but I was positively impressed👍 it was actually very good😁 We have an old skidder ourselves, and a want to make a little logging video with it. But there isn’t space enough between my helmet and the roof of the skidder to mount a GoPro. So maybe I will use a chest mount😁👍

So much to look for to be honest, if you can take a knowledgeable person with you that's best.

You can usually plan on spending about 2 to 4k as soon as you get it home and start to clean it up.....fluids alone will cost hundreds, mainline, winch, packing cylinders, clutch, tires, chains, brakes, engine, waterpump, belts and thr list goes on.
