I like the proportions on Murray Pfaff’s ‘59 Imperial Soeedster. Chip can do magic with sheet metal, but I just can’t see the Continental exceeding Murray’s masterpiece. Quick story. This must have been 1969. I was the youngest engineer in Ford’s 429-460 engine engineering department. Mrs. Edsel Ford’s Continental was at the Engineering Center for some work. The 368 V8 needed a rebuild, but: 1. We wanted to install the new 460 engine. 2. No passenger car pistons were available and truck pistons would not provide the NVH quality we wanted for H.F. II’s mother’s car. The 460 engine & C6 transmission dropped in easily. To match up with the vehicles rocker panel mounted exhaust system we just swapped the exhaust manifolds left to right and the outlets faced forward. I got to take the vehicle out on the Dearborn Test Track with my boss, the 429-460 Engine Design supervisor, and the Engine Development supervisor. They were real good friends and usually had lunch together. We called them the Manhattan Boys. It was early afternoon and I guess that’s why I got to drive. As I was exiting the track & into the infield, a big dump truck test vehicle almost T-boned us. I had 2 supervisors chewing on me, we’re sitting in Mrs. Edsel Ford’s automobile and I’m thinking I’m gonna have a career change to refrigeration repairman, working for my father… I clearly had the right of way, but if the car had been racked up and/or the bosses hurt, I was toast. Fortunately for me, the test track manager was looking at the track from the test track office and he saw the incident. While I was getting yelled at, he rushed over and read the truck driver, a test track employee, the riot act - and saved my job!

Good Lord, the quality of that metal work is absolutely mind-blowing and stunning! That car is going to be absolutely gorgeous when she's painted, full interior done, wheels etc! Seeing and hearing it for the first time will be awesome for the guys Building it

Hey Chip. This is Mark, Denny's designer from Finns Restoration in Oregon ( the Pantera guy ). Love the car and all of your projects! Since you are making so many mods to update this ride. The biggest thing to me would be to nix that wrap around windshield header and get glass to lean back to the "A" pillar. Search one out or have one made. This would make a big impact. Best regards.
@chrischallis4240 Жыл бұрын
I don’t personally like that windscreen. If the customer wants finesse modifications so that it still looks like a ‘56, then so be it. Else, I would go with a much more sporty /sleek windscreen structure from another vehicle. Just my thoughts..!

Bell Glass In Phoenix has cut down laminate windshields for years. They are fast and priced right. Of course any windshield may break but they have done several for me with no problem.
@lukeryall2383 Жыл бұрын
Looking good guys. Hard from the angles on the video and I see you have the glass cut already but the windshield frame looks very upright. Could you lay it back to reduce the height and give a bit more sleek look.🤷

Wonder what it would take to put the continental front clip on a 1956 T bird ? That would be cool looking.
@NetWit20 Жыл бұрын
Incredible as always with Foose! I think the '56 Continental is one of the most beautiful cars ever. I agree, you need to get the car out in the sunlight to see your work ever so often. Aside from the distorted guitar sound track, this is a great video.

I had really hoped I was subject to a bad Chip Foose Overhauling tv show prank & my 5 stolen towed cars by my despicable condo board to during this countries crisis. One of the cars was a classic caddy from Auto Collection in Vegas that I bought my dying Mom to go for a ride & lift her spirits. This car is in my channel PlayList. I hope the car will come back some day & track them all down like in that movie.

Looks great, has a lot of potential. That w/s frame looks like a PITA to sort out. I realize nobody's asking me but before cutting it down I'd play with the seat height. I'm 6'4" and I hate riding low in a car, I prefer the top of the door midway between my shoulder and elbow. I'm curious where the w/s header would be at that seat height. Those wrap-around w/s look good from one way and odd from another. I'm certain you'll figure it out!

So how do you cut the windshield and frame. But the windshield first and fit the frame, or cut the frame and fit the old windshield. How does that work

Most folks probably missed it.... "See if we can cut the glass down and we'll make the metal fit it" That's how you make a proper windshield chop. Not the other way around!

I’m totally in favor of chopping the “A” pillars. It looks inordinately tall and clumsy. The upper corners don’t really translate that well to an open car either.

Look at that windshield carefully. If you lean it back, you're gonna have to cut it on the bottom corners where it meets the cow. You're gonna have to cut it. Give me up rights at the doors. And you're gonna have to cut it at the top. So that's gonna take five cuts on that windshield

Dont cut the glass,,,,,, cut the whole windshield frame loose from the body and lower it into the cowl, your 1 and a half inches ,, easily leaned back at that point also ,,, I chopped a 54 ford 2 inches that way , stock ,new windshield ,easy to replace too,,,lengthened the hood to cover where the cowl sank down ,then the wipers become hidden like a modern 60s car,,, only draw back is its narrower at the bottom then,,,and had to blend the door posts into the WS frame area ,,,,
