I have a customer who has a camaster elite with a cutting set face of 7’x10’ and a 3.5 kilowatt spindle if we really wanna mill some stuff. This was for us to learn on and cut our teeth. We plan on building a house and a new shop in a couple of years and we’ll have more room for a different machine. @carbide3d
@carbide3d 3 жыл бұрын
The bitsetter is attached to the endplate on the front right, and that attachment point does not exist on the left side so you cannot move it. The hybrid table is integral to the rigidity of the frame. Under the MDF strips are custom extrusions that go front to back, and they tie into beams going left to right. Together, they hold the frame square. There's nothing stopping you from trying to replace them, but we can't guarantee the machine would be as sturdy or accurate then. It would be easiest to simply put a sheet of MDF over the hybrid table.

Have been waiting to pull the trigger on this but so so disappointed that it still uses belts. Was seriously hoping for ball screws on the pro when announced. This has put me off for now... Really need a CNC for home but honestly can't wait another year or so for your next version to come out that might hopefully have ball/lead screws instead of belts. We use belt driven cncs at work and the belts are re-enforced steel toughened belts. They are thick but do stretch over time and need to be replaced.

Hi Winston I love your great videos I really like the new XXL PRO now with linear rails as I never liked the plastic V wheels used on many such similar machines I had a workbee which I chose because it had a lead screw vs belts, but it had the V wheels .. I have now sold my workbee and looking for my next machine and your new XXL PRO seems the one I am interested in A question regarding the belts you now use on the new XXL PRO I note that they are now 15mm. In your opinion, are these as good as using an 8mm leadscrew like on the workbee ? I plan to do a fair amount of aluminium plate making from time to time for other machines I plan to make Will the belts work as well and cope with that sort of aluminium cutting requirements ? ie stretch / break / etc... and will they be as accurate as leadscrews May I ask why you chose to use belts rather than leadscrews / ballscrews ? Keep those great videos coming Thanks
@carbide3d
@carbide3d 3 жыл бұрын
The 9mm belts we used prior coped fine with aluminum machining. 15 should be near indestructible, the limitation is stepper motor torque. It's functionally very close to a rack and pinion setup at this point, but without any issues of alignment and tuning since the belts are more forgiving. Leadscrew will have a precision advantage because there is a mechanical reduction, belts will have higher speed. It's a tradeoff we thought was appropriate for a general purpose machine, and we have a long track record with belts that we're confident in the reliability. -W

@carbide3d
@carbide3d 3 жыл бұрын
It is much easier to assemble. The unboxing process has been streamlined and everything goes together faster. The gantry is already assembled, so you basically just need to build the frame, drop the gantry on top, then do wiring. We expect it'll take people about 2-3 hours.

Why not a fixed rigid frame/gantry and a movable bed??? Am I going to have to sell a kidney to buy this in the UK??
@carbide3d
@carbide3d 3 жыл бұрын
A moving table of this size would require around 6 feet of total clearance in the Y direction, require a much much bigger structure around it, and probably slow down the Y motion because of weight of the moving table. Once you get above a certain size it's much more efficient to use a moving gantry. We can ship to the UK now and, once we get past the opening demand, I suspect that some of our EU distributors will carry it locally.

@@janderson2375 Assuming the rest of the machine is rigid you can't deflect the belt without stretching it. I'm sure its a fine belt system, but if the drive system is the same as the older shapeokos whats gonna reduce belt lifespan is not the tension but the tight bend radius.

They released a “pro” xxl with some upgrades and linear rails and its 1k more? It seems like they should have just put these upgrades on all of their machines. I have never had a need for t track table. Bought it never installed it. The bit setter is great. The shapeoko 2 is a good design but old. Everyone has been waiting for an upgrade for you to make it more rigid. Just confused by this marketing strategy... seems like you should be discontinuing the old machines and releasing the upgraded model. It’s great don’t get me wrong and not everyone will need the upgrades but this will have people who buy the standard model pissed once they find out how flimsy the z axis is and that they could have bought an open builds with linear rails for way less.
