Congrats on the upgrade! I switched from VR to the Tobii simply due to convenience. It's absolutely wonderful, IMHO, after some adjustments. Personally I increased the deadzone a little and independently adjusted the X and Y axis for my own taste.

I got my Tobii for the same reason, is it as good as VR in terms of immersion? No. Do I use it much more frequently because it's convenient? Yes! Hence I love it, works really well!

I love my Tobi it dramatically improves situational awareness and as you mentioned is ideal for setting up airliners where you need to look at the EFB, then the MCDU and back to EFB then the OHP etc etc.

I’ve had mine a few months now ! It does make things more immersive for sure ! I did suffer initially with headaches ! I now just use the head tracking instead of the eyes and it works for me ! It’s a nice bit of kit and this is a great video by Jonathan showcasing the pros and cons ! I’m glad I bought it ! 👍🙏🏻❤️👨‍✈️✈️

Great to see you finally have head, eye tracking. Its a game changer for sure. I am a trackir user for the last 4 years since MFS 2020 rolled out. I don't think i could ever use it without head tracking. If my trackir gives up, i defiantly will look at Tobii without hesitation. I use the cap so its a lot easier without cables but Tobii is a different ball game. Your videos Johnathan from now on will look even better. Well done to you sir, you fully deserve it. Big thumbs up from me👍

Wow! Thank-you for sharing a demonstration of the Tobii Eye Tracker 5 with us. For me though it was how I will no longer be embarrassed whenever anyone else comes into my office space with all I have managed to stuff in it. I’M JUST JOKING!! My name is Guerry, and I’m from America. When I have managed to view you live streaming, I am “C-990 Buff”. Truly, this has been a HUGE eye opener when it comes to the availability of equipment for making MSFS a more realistic simulator. I am impressed! Without having read the comments of others, which I normally do first, I have a question not only for you, but for your enlightened audience, since I am relatively new to MSFS. I already have the Logitech yoke, throttle quadrant, and rudder assemblies. When it comes to upgrading my equipment, at what priority would you and/or your audience put purchasing the Tobii Eye Tracker? For a matter of fact, when it comes to upgrading equipment itself, what would be your priority for upgrading the various components? For example, especially if I purchase a multiengine aircraft, I would love to have the Honeycomb yoke and throttle quadrant. Several of the Logitech ancillary components look attractive too. However, I prefer to read the opinion of others rather than spend a great deal of time in research and experimenting for myself. From what I’ve gleaned from your video, I would place purchasing the Honeycomb equipment I mentioned ahead of the eye tracker. For their prices are almost similar, but I would get more enjoyment, in my opinion, by my priority. So, if anyone is able to provide me with their suggestions, I would most appreciate it. There are no right or wrong opinions for me, and by all means, I will not hold anyone’s feet to the fire. All decisions I make when it comes to purchasing equipment, I will hold myself to be 100% responsible. Thank-you ahead of time.
@jonbeckett

It's a very subjective question. I would put the controls ahead of the head tracker. Where a head tracker *really* starts to pay off is combat - which most people go nowhere near. The only misgiving I might have with the Honeycomb kit is that you will have all sorts of fun and games getting it to work correctly - which might involve running FSUIPC, SPAD, AaO or other middleware apps. I know more than one person that's sold the Honeycomb yolk and throttles after getting annoyed with the configuration mountain they had to climb with it.

I’ve had a Tobii prior to the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 release (fantastic in Elite Dangerous and ATS). Took me a while to dial in my settings but I have it now so the sensitivity is such my head is the main tracking source but, when I look towards the side window, my head is sufficiently centred that I can then glance to my right or left so the eye tracking takes over and I can comfortably look behind me. I turn the tracker off when I need to interact with the instruments. PSA you often need to press the key you have bound to Centre view twice when you are initially placed in the cockpit in order to get your correct default view, the double press not usually needed after switching Tobii off/on mid flight.

Congratualtions on your upgrade !. I love my Tobi Eye Tracker. For me personally it is a vast improvement over Track IR. Of course tech advances through the years, and no disfavour to Track IR which is still an excellent product for many users, and certainly it is just as innovative. But step forward a few years and Tobi have brought us a product which is simple and very effective for MSFS. I used Track IR for a while but found it a little unstable in its tracking in some instances. Tobi which has both eye and head tracking is much better for me. But you do have to make sure you adjust your Tobi Sensitivity settings, to suit your own preference, otherwise maybe a a bit of motion sickness or certainly a feeling of uneasiness may creep in on a long flight in the simulator. But actually this can settle down as your brain learns this new device. Just be aware to adjust your sensitivity to be at comfort with the device. It certainly adds to the immersion within the simulator. People often ask about the "flicker" form the Tobi sensors, but no, it does not bother me. Sometimes the flicker was seen, because of camera or mobile phone cameras that You Tube content users use to record the use of this product, and inherent syncing as they record the Tobi. When you actually use it yourself its not an issue that affects me. Overall an excellent and immersive product.

I am sooooo tired of the issues I have with my trackIR. This device keeps popping into my feed as if the Simulation Gods are smiling down on me saying "here friend take it, its good" 3:40 the trackIR does not allow one to use the keyboard so this is a huge plus. Also you are moving so much and the view stays steady. With trackIR you are stuck in this little window of movement you are allowed or the sensors lose connection and the view goes swinging wildly making the whole experience feel so constricted with trackIR on your head.

I have had GREAT luck with mine. I've had it for about 6 months. Once you get the settings right, it needs few or no adjustments. I suspend it when I am doing my complex MSFS startups, and activate it once I am ready to taxi. (There is a Flow Pro widget to turn it on and off) I love it all the time, but especially when doing landings. It makes it so much more realistic. I really like not having to wear a hat or headphones for it to work.

Jonathan. Thanks for your insights and thoughts on the Tobii5. I’ve followed the development of VR for many years but I don’t believe the technology is yet able to deliver what it promises. It’s certainly not affordable in IMHO. At £230 the Tobii5 promises to deliver the immersion without the need to wear a heavy headset or break the bank. Mines on its way from Netherlands. I’ll let you know how it goes when I have a few flights under my belt.

If you do use Tobii you will get a much better response from a USB 3 powered hub over a USB2 powered hub. Love mine to bits, though a toggle to disable can be very useful for some more complex aircraft for individual switch operation. I don't want to fly without mine and compared to TrackIR is a much preferable solution for day to day usability and longevity too. No bits to fall off, catch or break. Love it.

I have both also and also not going back to Tracker (hat clip is now thankfully gone as is the cheap infrared camera). There is more for you to cover Jon. The two keyboard/yoke button controls; pause and reset center view. The latter has been problematic for me, but you seemed to have no issue, but I would like your take. Also I would like see your take on the sensitivity adjustments when you have had a chance to get familiar with them. I find the Tobii software be underdeveloped to some extent. The key pitch and yaw are combined in the same control, here are no sensitivity curve adjustments only linear +/-; a couple nits like that. All that said, The Tobii combined head and eye tracker with no headpiece is a whole new level of technology that is, in a word, fantastic!

I recommend turning off eye tracking and only using head if you additional screens for maps etc. as I found it jarring jumping between screens using only your eyes. It's a fantastic device though, I much prefer it over TrackIR. As someone else mentioned, the only thing it lacks in MSFS is a pause function so you can lock your view on a specific instrument for example.

Been using one of these for about 18 months now and I've had no issues whatsoever with Tobii and Microsoft Flight Sim, best £200 I've spent. I will say this however, with DCS World (which isn't natively supported like MSFS and requires use of the Tobii Gamehub software) I had much better results with FaceTrackNoIR instead of the Tobii software. Only caveat is having to uninstall FacetrackNoIR when I'm using MSFS due to it thinking it's a TrackIR unit.

I have both Track IR & the Tobii Eye Tracker and prefer the Tobii. I just wish they had a keyboard shortcut to disable the infrared beams. Every time I switch to VR, I forget to turn the Tobii off with the Tobii software and burn my retinas out as soon as I put the Oculus on and look at the monitor. Then I have to take off the headset, find the Tobii control panel, and disable it. Would be so nice to just have a keyboard shortcut.

@@SolRayz You can set a MSFS 2020 keyboard command to "toggle head tracking" but that just gets MSFS to ignore it as a tracking device. It doesn't turn off the infrared eye-tracking LEDs on the front of the Tobii, and they really shine through the Oculus Quest when you look at them. It's fine for temporarily getting rid of head tracking in the sim, when not in VR mode though. I just always forget that Tobii is even there. I need a "prep for VR" checklist" lol..

@jonbeckett Жыл бұрын
Funny you say that - next on my list :)
@peterellis49
@peterellis49 Жыл бұрын
To look up at overhead panels from default cockpit view means moving your head up so much it becomes uncomfortable. To avoid this, it is necessary to increase the sensitivity, so that small head movements result in larger movement on screen, but the trade off is that for normal viewing around the cockpit, the sensitivity being higher will result in too much movement on screen unless you keep almost still. It is better to hotkey an overhead view first, then continue with the tracker, then reset cockpit view to default via F12 or whatever key you assign.

I'd really like to see a comparison between the Tobii and the TrackIR with the pro clip. I have some issues with the trackIR like the sensor placement on a thin monitor, wire on the headset which could be easily adapted to battery, and the IR being masked by head turns (specifically left view) but it still works all these years. Sadly TrackIR just hasn't improved anything in the last 15 years, and the alternatives using modern tech could make it obsolete.

@zorbakaput8537
@zorbakaput8537 Жыл бұрын
I have used both and settled on the TrackIR for its sensitivity and accuracy. I certainly converted my Track IR to battery using a couple of 18650 Lithiums and a small circuit to drop to 5v. It lasts at least 36 hrs continuous before swapping the batteries out of the case (about 10-14 days irl use). I use a high quality wireless headset so I am free to walk away from the controls and get a cuppa without issue. As for the head turn you need to play with your speed and movement settings more, as the masking only occurs if you head goes past where it would in real life and the speed setting adjustment will fix that to the setting which suits your head turn. They don't need to change a thing in my opinion - "if it ain't broke etc". They regularly update the game profiles also. As for placing on a thin monitor Blutack is your friend.

Please help me to understand the concept. Let’s say you have a single screen in front of your joystick and flight controls. You then add the eye tracker. When you look left, right, up, down, etc, the eye tracker senses those eye movements and moves the view on the screen correspondingly. But the screen is still sitting in the same place in front of you! So although the view moves when you look in another direction, you still have to look back at the screen to see anything. When you move your vision back to the screen in front of you, doesn’t the view move back to facing forwards?
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett Жыл бұрын
Broadly speaking, the position of your head controls the camera direction. You can calibrate it, so 30 degrees of lateral rotation (for example) results in 180 degrees of camera rotation - so you can still look at the screen with your eyes, but see behind you in the simulator. It takes some time to adjust to, but works well. The eye tracking can be thought of as a refinement - and you can adjust the bias - so the tracking will follow your head for gross positioning, but your eyes for fine tuning.

As a TrackIr user, I'd go with head/eye tracking all the way.
@Skauber
@Skauber Жыл бұрын
I bought mine on a 20% sale, they do have those sales from time to time. I had the TrackIR before this, and it works well. But I found it annoying to have to put something on my head, as I usually don't use headset but rather speakers for my sound. It also is affected by sunlight, where in certain times in the day the sun would hit my window in just the right place where even curtains couldn't block it, and then the trackIR went stupid and was unable to track anything regardless of filter settings. It is also worth noting that there are still issues with TrackIR, especially with drifting requiring frequent recentering, but it seems Naturalpoint has pretty much abandoned all development on the product as there haven't been any updates in years, v5.4.2 was released in 2016.... The Tobii is way better in this regard, holds center quite well, doesn't require you to use anything on your head, it's almost immune to sunlight, it's a way better solution.

I have it but I'm still trying to "turn it off" while tunning in frequencies for example. I'm not able to do it while the view keeps moving. While the centering button stops the movement while in the default view, I want to be able to freeze the view while looking at a side or overhead panel, click on something and turn it back on. Can someone enlighten me on how to do this?
@peterellis49

Unfortunately it isn’t possible, like it is in trackir, this is my only gripe. It’s either on, and therefore reacting to your head/eye movement or off, in which case it reverts to default cockpit view.

@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett Жыл бұрын
Microsoft Store. Did you ever have Opentrack installed? or any other head tracker? You need to completely remove them - check the registry, program files, etc. I previously had Opentrack installed, and it caused Flight Simulator to not see it. I removed opentrack, checked all the files were gone, rebooted, re-installed the drivers for Tobii, and then MSFS worked immediately. Worth noting - totally caused by OpenTrack, and the trail of destruction it left in the file system and registry.
@jonbeckett

Also worth noting - once working, to get it to do head tracking translation (moving around), I had to revert to the default keyboard template, and configure toggle keys for enable head tracker, and reset home cockpit view. Once done, it worked flawlessly.
