ive got an immaculate one that i only drive in the summer, surprisingly, they haven't aged well when it comes to drivability. They're decent but way behind what you remember them to be

@@robc1014 exactly, the new M4 heavier than one it replaces by 100kg then BMW to remove 100kg from this one and call it lightweight and will charge silly money. All they had to do is make the M4 lighter from the start

It's lightweight in comparison with the regular model. Not absolute lightweight. For that we have plastic aluminum RC toy sized cars like the Elise.

Those laser wire rear tail lights are really beautiful. Still getting used to the front grill, but overall, i like it and would buy this machine

No...we need to save the 500 grams or so per floor mat. Its absolutely necessary. If it was me..I'd remove the doors...bootlid, rear bumper, front bonnet too...passenger seat isn't necessary...neither are the windows...u know what? Screw the seats altogether..the plastic garden ones work fine

@BTICronox it’s somewhat lazy journalism to not point this out. Overall I feel they’ve missed a real opportunity here…they could have gone balls out and made this a real statement….and it doesn’t even sound good, that’s a crime! I had a 46csl from 06 to 09 and it was a brilliant but flawed car in lots of ways.

When I first saw the E46 M3 CSL, it was love at first sight. I remember telling myself this is the ONE, however, I knew I couldn't afford it being in my mid-twenties at the time. Nevertheless, I wanted to at least get the next best thing so I saved up to buy a used silver grey metallic E46 M3 instead with the hopes of customizing it to make it look a CSL. The funny thing is since it wasn't released in US, and the CSL rims were one of the things that really drew me to the car's design, I had to buy them in the UK through eBay before I even bought the car. That's just how much I was sure I was going to go through with the big purchase. All said and done although I wanted to also buy the CSL trunk spoiler and carbon fiber front fender I ended up just lowering the car a bit with some Eibach performance springs and upgrading to some P Zero Nero tires since I realized that I didn't need do anything more and the way it turned out already exceeded everything I could hope for at the time. I'm sure this CSL is great but the E46 M3 CSL will always be my first love and maybe one day I can actually get the real deal.

@@raphaellima9539 the real track car is all about weight distribution and handling. That's when you can feel the sensation of the whole car and take control over everything. That's the true art of driving. More horsepower doesn't make a car is track-ready, and it's just boring

that being said, even the basic fat M3 this generation handles MUCH better than the F80 M3, which was quite a mess. At the end, we just want the car to handle well.

If the smallest weight saving is 400 gram they haven't put much effort into it. Watch Top Gear's video about the GMA T50 and you will understand what trying to save weight really means!

Why do you want 4 doors if there’s no rear seat? That would add more weight for the extra hardware, glass and bracing.

There has been a tremendous improvement in the car but at a similar cost. Definitely a wise choice the three-door version, this is when you want to show, among other things, that it can break timers on the track.

I just had a wtf moment when he said the E46 CSL was 20 years ago!!! I proudly owned one and had many amazing summers up in Scotland enjoying it to its full potential on amazing B roads and somehow survived to tell the tale. The sound of the carbon air box at full chat was a thing of beauty and you could literally never get sick of launching it. Summer Crail days out running it up and down the quarter mile followed by track days at Knockhill. Bring back my youth all is forgiven.

It looks like a really interesting and enticing enthusiast car and I thank BMW for making it but just like other recent special BMW M cars strange choices were made. It seems a bit phoned in. They could have improved so many other things easily but as mentioned in the video they just kind of stopped at a nice round number

I disagree in the weight point. I don’t see where else they could have cut weight. They did, what they were allowed to in my opinion. Much more isn’t really possible due to environment and safety regulations. What if they didn’t stop at the round number but did everything to get to this point? I don’t know 🤷‍♂️

@@Prof.Dr.Diagnose I think he alludes to the fact that BMW gave up making actually light sports car and instead prefer to make luxury badges and slap CSL badges on it. Fair enough, it's still ludicrous. The L in CSL stands for "Leichtbau", there isn't much leicht about this barge.

@@TheChannel1978 Yes that’s true. They got heavier, and i don’t like that as well. But it’s based on the M4, which is based on the 4 series. An existing model that has it‘s weight figure. Of course you can’t cut off 300 or 400kg. That’s just not possible. And in this context, the L in CSL is pretty adequate in my opinion. But i agree: I would be happy if they could get their heads out of the sand and build a proper race car.

I think it looks really good and those rear lights are amazing, not sure about the paint job though. A brighter, glossier color would show off the body so much better than flat grey.

E46 timeless and a personal favorite, but times are changing. I like the new G8x personally & the front grille on this CSL version is much more aggressive imo.. The ugliest bit on these cars is the shift lever, again, in my opinion!

I’m not sure how to feel about this car. I think it looks great! I love the seats,paint,headlight and tail lights. But I just don’t like how big it is. And it’s a little too quiet.

props to this man explaining gts and csl. but if the gts is for the *track* don't u also want lightness along with aero for it to be the 'fastest' m car BMW can offer. i just find it a bit redundant that he says csl is just for ultimate lightness when a gts can ultimately mean the same thing.

Honestly I heard a whole lot of nothing when he was explaining the difference from the last gts to this.. especially when he said the gts was lighter still then the “lightweight” model. Seems like a namesake cash grab. Which is fine too I understand it.

Yeah I've watched a couple of these interviews so far and this 100% feels like a cash grab. Personally I'm not a fan of the styling outside of the ducktail lid. This M4 model has always looked like a Mustang or A5 to me. Boring. Even with the race bits tacked on.

AMG GTS is weak in performance. So is Aston Martin. AMG GT will depreciate worth crap all in 3-5 years..while this will appreciate. It's also way faster on the track and possibly also on quarter mile despite being RWD

Way to miss the point again, the one complaint about the E46 CSL was the gearbox, and still they refuse to put a proper manual in a LIGHTWEIGHT special. He said himself that the GTS was a track model, this is a lightweight model, so it should be about driving experience not outright speed. It should also have no air con, no radio, no door trim, manual windows, and even an open dash as at least options. On the bright side, that grille looks way better without the ugly sensors and panneling of the other buckteethed cars, and the rear end looks great with the ducktail and new lights. I also like the badge.

But the dual cluth transmission doesnt weigh more than a manual gearbox and they are trying to make it as fast as possible so dual clutch is the way to go.

So the CSL you want is basically a car that doesn’t sell and make the company lose money. No one with the right mind will spend so much money on a car that doesn’t have Air con and power windows in 2022. Just because you want to focus on driving doesn’t mean we all need go back to the stone age. Don’t forget last time BMW make the M4 GTS, a car that doesn’t had a glovebox and need to fill up water every time before you drive it. And the result is people and medias don’t like it. I think BMW got it right this time. When costumers said they want a race car, they don’t actually want a race car. They want a car that looks and goes like a race car but still had comfortable equipment and modern technology.

@@imGeistevereint DCT is around 50 %heavier than manual (box vs box)... Some DCT are even heavier than automatics. But seems BMW to worried about the future to make a new DCT unfortunately....

I like how every time BMW shows the G80/G82, they always drill a front license plate on to dampen the effect, even on this super special CSL. No other high end manufacturer would drill their front bumpers while showing their cars to the media. This is BMW’s tacit admission that they made a gigantic (pun intended) mistake with the front grille but it was too late to interrupt production. On another note, I despise how German manufacturers put Brembos on the front axle and cheap Pep Boys painted steel calipers on the rear axle.

When I sold my R8 I thought about waiting for the CSL. I got a slightly used Giulia GTA instead, absolute dream and I don't regret it a bit after seeing how the CSL turned out. I feel bad for hardcore BMW fans...

The updated grill has grown on me, and really like the tailights led design. These new cars people can argue they aren't pure as the old ones, the bigger dimensions, increase in weight and all other add ons due to regulations. But people will sure miss them when most cars get electric.

I owned a Laguna Seca blue e46 for ten years. It was such a great car. Besides the M2, BMW has lost their way and giving this “floor mat lightened” m4 a CSL badge illustrates this point exactly.

I honestly love it. It is definitely a polarizing design, especially with the red accents, but I think over time it'll grow on a lot of people. I'm not sure if this will have the same status or legacy that the E46 CSL has, but in its own right it is a special car. Also, I have to say I really love those yellow headlight accents when they light up, that's so cool.

Making the same mistake as last time, offering it only with an Automatic. If the “CSL” badge really stood for light weight, wouldn’t it make sense to at least offer it with a manual? Cool car sure, but the last M4 GTS was around 300 lb (135kg) lighter than this CSL. What gives?

Can’t help but feel BMW are ruining their legacy. No doubt G80 is a brilliant car to drive, but the CSL badge means it has to be as special as the other 2 CSL’s which are some of the most special BMW’s in history, and I really doubt this will do that. To me it just seems to be a marketing play to make sales 😔

I like it, really well engineered. I say to heck with "lightweight" because it equals flimsy in my book, BUT, they could really carry over the 7 series carbon/titanium floor pan sandwich idea, perhaps? No complaints though, this things kicks ass all the way....
