Holy cow, no wonder I like you. The Long Dark is one of my favorites. I think it's a work of art. It's one of the few games that makes me feel uncomfortably lonely. We found each other. We. Found. Each. Other. ❤

Pertaining to your question about Vaesen: I love it. Though you are right to feel like this system favors the “one-shot” style- due to the inherent episodic nature of mystery solving, I can put my 1 ¢ in for solo play. It is great. First off- the Solo Thursdays Child supplement does make for a great way to experience a mystery within the setting without spoiling yourself as a solo player. I’ve played it both on and off my channel and can say I love the system.

It feels like Forbidden Lands in space with some additional and updated rules. Once I looked at the quick start I bought in

Re: Vaesen - did same as you; want to play it for the cool monster hunter vibe, and from the get-go you get an HQ/stronghold that you continually uncover secrets about. Also really intrigued by the nordic setting. Re: Coriolis - I'm a huge Free League fan, have a lot of their other titles, but Coriolis I've always been circling, really unsure about it. Not sure why, but your review of the Quickstart has me intrigued enough to give it a second look. Edit: And you can't go wrong with Martin Grip's artwork - I was hooked on his style with Symbaroum.

I was in the same boat with you regarding Alien, but my group has been playing a year long as Sci-Fi setting and it fit in well and we haven’t had the Xenomorph in the game. Yet. Muhaahaaa
@amanisalone8 ай бұрын
Wow this has blown my mind. So you’re able to populate the universe without getting into xenomorphs? Don’t get me wrong I LOVE alien and anything HR Geiger adjacent, but it does make me think there’s so much more to the world than just facehuggers. Wish I could be a fly on the wall for a session
@Doubledb5198 ай бұрын
Let’s see if I can cover this in less than 12 pages. I think the key is to have built a story outside of the Alien Universe. So ours is a hodgepodge of my own ideas, Warhammer 40k and Alien. On Earth there’s the Church for Genetic Advancement (CGA) and they’re a bunch of radicals that see that God has gotten us so far, but it’s now humanity that needs to take the next step in evolution and they’ve been involved in genetic research for the past 200 years. We had a lot of “Truths” created through game play in Mothership, Genesys, 3:16 & Stars without Number. When we began to play Alien, it was about discovery on a sentient planet that was controlling the minds of the creatures on the planet and when humans arrived the planet attempted to find a way to control them. So lots of play with NPCs turning on the party and every living thing on the planet was a potential enemy. This played out really well using the Alien RPG and now my players have encountered a toxin that has begun to alter the DNA of an NPC. I could either take this in the direction of more body horror and human enemies or have this be the first Neomorph. Given we’re playing in Alien I’ll likely make it a Neomorph. I think another idea is to not follow the movie timeline where the Aliens are nearly extinct from Alien 3 to Alien Resurrection, but take the Dark Horse Comic where humanity is actively testing and studying the Xenomorphs giving you the scientists as enemies as well as the potential outbreak of a hive. Or, your crew is trying to run Alien Eggs to researchers and the threat isn’t the eggs, but others who want to stop you from getting them there.

So i have the One Ring and pdfs of other YZE games from a bundle of holding,but have yet to play them. Does the need for a 6, even with all the dice, mean constant failure on the players part? Do toy find there is a lot of failure in the game? For the record, im not against player failure. Just wondering how it stacks to maybe other systems
@whangbar6 ай бұрын
I like Vaesen, too. I have the game and a few of the extas. But I also haven't played it. So maybe I can't truthfully say I like it. Maybe I like the idea of it. I have to saturate myself in the setting before I can feel like I know it well enough to enter it imaginatively. I'm excited, though, because I'm a great fan of the video game *Black Book* and Vaesen has a supplement for "Mythic Ukraine," which intrigues me. Still, there's something preventing me from starting down that road. Hmm.

I like the idea of a space game focusing on exploration. The rules are very similar to Electric State (such as hope, no skills). It seems very interesting. As the other Free League systems, it might have solo rules. I can picture a solo session using this system + Starfored and Stars Without Numbers tables. 😅
@amanisalone8 ай бұрын
That’s a good point, if they’re continuing with the DB model I wouldn’t be surprised if they slapped in a 10-page insert
@CavernadoLekkis8 ай бұрын
@amanisalone Twilight 2k and The Walking Dead RPG have built-in solo rules. Vaesen and ForbiddenLands, they have published solo rules in separated modules. The exploration/sandbox framework that they add to their systems is a great tool for the solo players.

If you want to try something like Alien there is Hostile Solo. It uses the Cepheus engine and you just need two d6 to play

Thanks for making the review of the rules. I was turned off by the KS since they are making the solo rules such a high level to unlock. I watched an interview with the authors and they did not know how they were even going to write the solo rules. It just turned me off and I love their products but I will wait and see on this one.
@Doubledb5198 ай бұрын
I don’t use their solo rules. I’ll sometimes use their tables but the core rules for solo are for the most part weak. I use a combo of Mythic and Radiance Adventure Engine for all my solo games so whatever FL puts out is added as needed/wanted.

First of all it's for elite gamers only...second of all you have to find a bargain bin at a local game store and then when you pull out the tracker and say "how much for this?" You have to wait for them to answer because no one has purchased one in nine years.
