Alan Ferkinhoff that’s not true. The corridor is mostly owned by Amtrak. Freight services and other commuter rail services get permission from Amtrak to operate on their tracks. And the reason trains are slower on the corridor is not only slower services, but the winding curves on the corridor. Those along with speed restrictions limit the top speed of the train. And the average speed right now is less than half as fast the train can go. Now if they were to actually update the corridor in most areas, straighten curves, etc., then we’d have faster services.

Because at Amtrak's inception, the Gov't of the day really wanted to get rid of trains altogether, heavily lobbied for by Detroit. So, they thought that killing it financially would be the less obvious way to do so, as that's the way most of passenger rail transport was killed by the automotive industry anyway :-\
@froztytrainfilms91485 жыл бұрын
Dutch Master Amtrak was created to stop railroad companies from disappearing. They’ve inherited all of the other former railroad’s equipment and operated services throughout the United States. The reason why train service was declining was because of the highway system being funded and a system of airports. The government literally took money made from the railroads and invested it into these other modes of transport. Initially they thought it was a good idea, but now we’re really seeing the bad side of this. You have more accidents occurring on the highway than being on the railroad, and there’s more airport delays, and the unnecessary system of security that you have to go through just to board a plane. In the end, trains are the better option, and if they’re well invested into, they’ll be the better transportation option, whether it means high speed travel

It will only cut the time by 15 minutes? Well that is pointless considering the whole trip is about 7 hours 5 minutes. What they really need to do to save time is get rid of most of their stops, like on the Washington to NYC corridor they should get rid of the Baltimore airport, Wilmington, and Newark stops, which only leaves stops at the major cities Baltimore and Philadelphia. The Northeast Regional already takes care of those stations so if people really need to take a train from one of them then they can take the northeast regional to to their destination or to the nearest Acela stop, that’s how train systems in Europe work.

They should've started turning the NEC into a true high-speed line before they placed an order for these new trains. The older trains can barely reach their top speeds for longer than 10 minutes at a time, and if the rail line isn't upgraded, these new trains will suffer from the same problems. If you want your train to reach 220 MPH (350 KMPH) you will need to have a rail line dedicated fully to that specific type of train. With the current NEC rail line, and with the current amount of speed changes being present, there is absolutely no room for even the old Acela trains, let alone the newer ones. I'm from the Netherlands, and I've travelled on a true high-speed line before, with Eurostar. I am aware that it will certainly take at least a few decades to upgrade the rail line, but if Amtrak wishes to make their trains go faster, an upgrade to their tracks is the first step they should take. Just look at France. They still use their over 40-year old TGV-PSE sets (refurbished) without problems, because they have so many dedicated high-speed lines. My advice to Amtrak: don't skip the first crucial step to making your trains go faster. It'll only worsen the problems and your public image.
@EduardoEscarez5 жыл бұрын
The problem of Amtrak to build a true HSR network are two: First, that train services (so far) don't have a lot of public support to convince the federal government to give them all the money they would require. The second is that there is a lot of red tape on this kinds of things, because how much can the federal government do without additional support from local govs, and is not so much; and that doesn't count eminent domain and their legal battles, environmental regulations, etc. In rail infrastructure there is China (the government does what it wants), the rest of the world (the gov has to face some roadblocks) and the US (the gov needs to face every single roadblock possible).
@Tyme_Whyrlwynd5 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, I am aware of the nonexistent public support and the lack of funding. I am also aware of the fact that the NEC is too densely populated, and that Amtrak would literally have to cut through the city in order to build a true high-speed line. Of course there are going to be environmental concerns when building a dedicated high-speed line for the Acela Express.
@EduardoEscarez5 жыл бұрын
@@Tyme_Whyrlwynd But a great obstacle never mention is the incredible amount of red tape there. For example, here in Chile the Metro de Santiago add two new lines (Línea 3 y Línea 6) with 35.4km in total with a cost of 2.8 billion dollars, or 80MM USD/Km. In New York, they are still building an extension, the East Side Access, at 12 billion dollars for just 3.2 km of underground, or 3.75BN USD/Km. With that 12 billion dollars we could build the future lines 7, 8 and 9, plus a true HSR between Santiago and Valparaiso (my city) and still have something more of a billion dollars remaining. Many of that is because of design changes, overstaffed projects, lots of external consulting, conflicting contracts, in ways no other country on Earth experiences. I mentioned that the East Side Access has also a 15 year delay? That's why they're choosing this, because like a true HSR line in the NEC could cost probably over 150BN USD. I mean, even California is cutting the HSR line because they can't afford the 64-to-100 BN USD of building all the parts of the Phase 1 of their project. They need first a way to do large infrastructure projects at cost around what the rest of the world does normally, and then start to build them.

Great idea to upgrade the cars, but a dedicated protected track is what NEEDS to be done so the trains can actually run high speeds.

This is a sad solution to the real problem that the physical rail infrastructure in the US is in awful shape. The existing Acela trains would be perfectly fine if the infrastructure it runs on would allow it to go max speed all the way from Boston to DC. The reduced travel time by 15 minutes is a joke. Here in tiny Finland we've had this exact same technology for decades, and rest of Europe has bullet trains going 185mph under the sea and through the mountains crossing national borders. I'm not talking about just high-speed rail though, it's sorry to see how there isn't even proper metropolitan, regional or statewide rail services in the US. Hope you will restore the glory of rail travel in America some day.
@GintaPPE10005 жыл бұрын
No, the existing Acelas are not “perfectly fine.” They’re a white elephant fleet using almost exclusively custom-designed components, the heavy body causes hunting problems and causes them to beat up the track exponentially harder than conventional trains, and Amtrak’s bare minimum maintenance is nowhere near manufacturer recommendations. The Acelas were designed for a 30-year mechanical life yet are already living on borrowed time because of their own horrible, uber-customized design.

If the Coast Starlight added a second daily train between Los Angeles and Sacramento, the train might become a lot more useful than if the one train a day gets 40% faster between Goleta and San Jose. However, doing both would obviously be the best thing to do -- but I'm skeptical that the host freight railroad would allow both.

All that just to cut the travel time of a 10 hours ride by 15 minutes? Sounds like a waste if you ask me. What they should focus on first instead of flashy new trains is upgrading the infrastructure. Upgrade all the tracks to Class 9 rail wherever possible (220 mph allowed by the FRA) and redo the signals, switches, etc. Why bother with flashy new trains if it's not going to reduce travel time by much? There's no reason why it should take longer than 3 hours to go from Boston to DC by rail.
@yindee3725 жыл бұрын
Henry Black it doesn’t make sense to not upgrade the trains as well though. I agree infrastructure needs to be upgraded, but what’s the point of 150mph trains on 220mph track?
@GIJew5 жыл бұрын
@@yindee372 I'm not saying that they shouldn't upgrade the trains as well, but there's no point in upgrading the trains if the tracks they run on still have the same speed limits. Put more capital towards infrastructure - not USB charging ports on every seat. In my opinion, they should upgrade the tracks first, then once that's done - go ahead and get your flashy new equipment. Because by the time they actually upgrade the rails, these new cars will be outdated and wasted.
