They did a DNA study in Puerto Rico and found that 15 % of Puerto Ricans population had Taino indigenous traces in their blood. Most of the DNA is maternal inherited from the only female Taino Cacique ( chief) named Yuiza. Puerto Rico had the highest percentage of indigenous DNA than any other islands.

Food for your thought (and not taught in US schools): Before the English landed in 1607 in what was later called "Geogetown" Virginia, and before The Pilgrims landed in 1620 in what was later known as Plymouth, Massachussets, Juan Ponce De Leon, (Puerto Rico's first Governor), landed in April 1513 in what we know today as Florida. (In the area we now call "Bradenton".)

being a PR man, Salsa music is Cuban music which I learned from Cuban Godfather (RIP)..., so IMHO We (PR's) along with the other amazing Latino culturas from the Caribbean and South America... And please never forget how Mexico was instrumental in putting the Cuban bands into their Movies because of their deep love and relationship with Cuba... So yes, in the 40's 50's 60's it was called Latin Music, then people gave its Genre name to it, thanks to the Fania and other labels and it went from there...
