It sounds a lot like a 60’s Marshall to me. If people don’t like it, then they just don’t like 60’s Marshalls. It doesn’t have the depth and sparkle of a JTM45, but it’s half the price. I’m sure it could benefit from a speaker upgrade but otherwise it seems great. The flubby low end was part of the original Marshall tone. I know some people don’t like it, but if you want Hendrix/Cream/Kossoff tone, you won’t get there with a tight sound.

the tilt control basically replaces the bright/normal inputs with a pot that not only allows you to choose bright, dark, or jump the inputs like a plexi, but with the pot gives you much more flexibility in how much of each. all the way left is "normal" all the way right is bright, noon is balanced mix like jumping inputs on a plexi, but it gives ya all the stuff in between as well. probably my favorite feature next to the amazing old school tone it produces.

Kind of tired of the Marshall haters. I have the head version of this and it's great. But do agree this amp needs to be cranked to get the best...and it's LOUD! Also agree the speaker in the combo isn't the best. The main problem it would seem is that the gain structure is far cleaner than the archetypal 'rock' Marshall sound of the 70's./80's. It's a cleaniish amp to be fair and meant to be retro. We'd all luv a jtm. But they're 3or 4 times the price in the uk.
@GuitarsnCars6 жыл бұрын
Bryan Clarke same here on the haters! It’s definitely aimed at those interested in more vintage sounds but it’s got a fair bit more gain available than old plexi types. Time was that you just couldn’t get overdrive without cranking the amp all the way hence why people often use attenuators with um these days. The origin seems to give similar gain level to a cranked early master volume like a JMP , the predecessor to the 800.

I own this and it’s a great amp, especially with a les Paul. I’ve owned a jtm45, vintage modern, jcm 800 and a dsl but this is my favourite. You have to set it up right though. It only sounds good in full power mode. It’s not a bedroom amp, it needs to be played loud to get the best sound. I find the best setting is running everything at 12 o’clock but the bass on 3. I run the gain at max and control the distortion from the guitar volume. I wire my les Pauls with 50s wiring and rarely run the guitar volume over 8. Maxing our a les Paul volume makes it fuzzy and less clear in a band mix. It’s an awesome vintage Marshall sound but you need to know what that is as it’s unlike the tight bottom end of Morden high gain amps.

great sounding amp. my guess is that all the guys that don´t like it just don´t like the tone of vintage Marshall amps, and i don´t mean vintage like in 1980s. plus, with this style of amp you really need to look for the sweet spot for your guitar and playing - something that wasn´t really done in this quick review (which is great anyway). you will not find a more authentic vintage Marshall sounding amp with master volume option, especially for the money. this amp shines at lower/mid gain settings - the possibility of pushing the gain even more on this amp may distract from it´s true strength.
@reaperxi-03824 жыл бұрын
Would you still recommend using a pedal just for a little push for solos? 2 years later how do you find it? Im looking for an amp to capture Clapton's Cream era, Page's punchyness and Kossoff style tones too. Would you still recommend this for that? cheers
@modestoney15774 жыл бұрын
@@reaperxi-0382 Well, i would definitely recommend to try one out yourself. It was designed with those tones in mind. Does it sound exactly like a vintage Marshall? Probably not. Is it the ultimate amp to get those tones with? Probably not, there are many different (boutique) amps anbd Marshall reissues out there that may do a better job. But, that said, i know of no other amp at this price range - and price has dropped since, at least in Europe - that would do a better job in getting those kind of tones. And money aside - it does sound good once you dialed it in right. Just be sure to leave the Master Volume wide open, basically treating it as if it was a non MV amp. It does not like the MV turned down. And play around with the EQ. Then a pedal to boost should not be a problem. But try for yourself and let me know what you think. Cheers!

@@modestoney1577 thanks for the advice mate. Only thing is with covid restrictions my local guitar shops are either closed or not letting people in, quite rightly so. Mostly been looking online. @modestoney15774 жыл бұрын
@@reaperxi-0382 I see. The good thing with buying online is that you can try it at home and still send it back if you don´t like it. Concerning the speakers i have no experience. I guess a Greenback would sound just fine, depending on what you are going for. Have you considered buying the head? You could then use it with different cabs and speakers.

Find me a schematic and I'll tell you exactly what that "Tilt" control does. It appears to be a blend pot with a bright cap on one side, considering the cascading gain ala JMP/JCM. The first 12AX7 isn't parallel like a JTM/Bassman jumper'd with a patch cable.. I'm happy Marshall made an affordable amp based on the classics. The Origin lineup should be pretty popular, barring any reliability issues that plague PCB tube amps. Great cosmetics too!

Could be the camera compression/limiting, there is a TON of compression/limiting in the camera, listen to the ambience come roaring in when he shuts the volume off. I think that is what makes many say this Marshall doesn't sound like a Marshall. I like the sound, the high gain sounds ok, like a compressed Marshall , the clean is unknown to me because of the camera leveling everything out so much, it sounded solid state clean. Seems like it is stuggling for headroom but again, without being there and the whole camera thing theres no way to gauge it very well.
@@premierguitar Auto volume or manual volume on XA20? Manual would be ideal, but you would of had to change it very often during this which is highly impractical. It would remove any auto leveling though.
@premierguitar6 жыл бұрын
Always manual on channel 2 with Royrer R121 input. We do several "max volume" tests to make sure whatever tweaking and pedals engaged don't burn the signal. Once that's established, we don't really touch anything. Channel 1 is on auto (that captures John's audio), and yes, we eliminate all channel 1 audio while he's playing so what you're hearing is straight from the Royer. Thanks for tuning in, Evan.
