This is my first and only Marshall I've ever owned, and just scored mine tonight for super cheap (300 USD/246Quid), and Origins seem to be anything BUT harsh. People don't like them because they're not very gainy amps which is what Marshalls are known for. We pedal guys love amps like this and it's the very reason I wanted one. Still dialing it in, but I already like it a lot

Marshalls are not known for high gain at all out of the box. Even a JCM800 is more ACDC than heavy metal. So they all need a boost anyway. Even my DSL is not that high gain. Fully dimed they can be relatively high gain but that's compared to a Fender not anything Mesa like. From the demo this has about as much gain as my DSL401.

Great demo! I just put a Marshall Origin 50 combo on lay a way. The easiest way to make this amp an absolute Plexi is get a MXR 10 BAND EQ PEDAL boost the highs and mids, then boost the gain on the pedal a tad bit, that way your amp is still stock, and just use a greenback.

@221b-l3t8 ай бұрын
Not sure about the Origin but my DSL likes to have the Master volume on full and preamp us3d to control volume and a boost tondrive the preamp plus boost low end and mids slightly with an EQ in the FX loop. Gets a nice Plexi style sound and this amp is way closer to a Plexi so I think this should work well too, volume near max, gain low, booster before the ampnand an EQ. Most effective in the loop, that lets you really shape the sound. The DSL is a bit shrill and fizzy so I cut the highs and boost the low end. Tube screamer up front.

Tried my Gretsch through this and got that classic Marshall grit and dirt that I fell in love with from AC/DC. What really got me was how well it cleaned up for a more spanky, Fender-esque jangly clean tone for when I wanted to do some jazz or rockabilly. This was through the MX112R cab, which I believe has the same speaker as the Origin cabs. I loved the sound for sure. I think I found the amp for me.

I recently purchased the Or20/Cab combo because the price was unbeatable, it's a Marshall, and the reviews were very favorable!. I'm far from being an expert but I really love this amp! The tilt is a nice along with the presence and gives me a bit wider yet basic sound for my blues and country style. My playing doesn't require more master volume to get where I want so I'm good there. I imagine that this amp with it's matched cab would do great in a live show in a medium to large venue and I guess might sound even better in a stereo set-up. Another plus was that the 4-button foot pedal came with the combo set. I know many of you are more knowledgeable and experienced than I am so it's your comments, reply's, and reviews that assist my decisions so keep sharing knowing that you're comments are being read and thank you! Good job, you actually dialed in a solid plexi tone. When it comes to vintage, single channel amps the "more good" knob is the Volume knob. A lot of classic crunch tones are just clean channels played bone crushingly loud. I've seen a lot of Marshall amp demo's that sound terrible simply because they've got the master volume knob at 3. Oy... It's settled then, I'm gonna need to find a practice space outside of the apartment...

Thank you 👍 I agree with all the points you made. It’s still a very cool amp but I can see how it wouldn’t be ideal for everyone. Thanks for watching!
@221b-l3t8 ай бұрын
I always use the volumes in reverse on Marshalls. Master full, preamp low, boost with pedal, EQ in the loop to take care of any unpleasantness, usually cut/boost highs or lows depending on the amp. They sound way better with the power tubes working hard and the pedal takes care of the pre amp. So unless you can crank it on both volumes always set master near full first and use gain or channel volume as the actual volume control.

This sounds great! Awesome playing as usual. Over the years I’ve had a heap of Marshalls: JCM800, JCM900, JMP100, 1987X, Valvestate 8080, and even a Lead 12 which sounded great at high volume. Marshalls all have that thing going on and all sound kind of similar, however I’ve discovered the earlier Plexi models are much more my vibe, but out of my price range. The Studio 20w Plexi head is very tempting for me though. Dan, what model of P90 is that? Is it the Seymour Duncan one or a Tonerider or something else?
@DanLeggatt3 жыл бұрын
The studio Plexi and mini 800 they do look super cool! With your Captor you can crank that little Plexi right up to get the good stuff too. I’m really pleased with what I can get out of this thing given the price. I’m just worried this is a gateway into vintage Marshall lust 😂😂 Tonerider Rebel 90 in the neck. Really cool pickup for getting more clarity. Only downside is the noise with in not being hum cancelling. Never bothered me at gigs but can be a challenge recording,
@MrNeilfatmonkey3 жыл бұрын
@@DanLeggatt the closest I got to the vintage sound was the 1987X, a 50w Plexi reissue which sounded amazing, but like this one suffered from the effects loop being next to useless because in this case it was a non master volume amp. The tone was glorious but it was before I had the captor and I couldn’t find an attenuator that worked for me so off it went to a new owner. I actually think this Origin does a really good job at getting that tone, especially coupled with the Greenback IRs. I reckon you should ignore the GAS and just keep this amp. Hey Dan, I have a origin 20 and love it. I also have a SV20 and I run them wet dry. When you start looking for a "proper" Marshall, check out the SV20, I wouldn't call it budget but much more usable than the big brothers. Got mine for $1000 and it has all the sound and feel of an SLP, doesn't push air like a big ine, but I'm not Bonamassa or Ritchie Faulkner so I can't use amps like that anymore. I'm an old plexi player from the 80's and they feel and sound incredible. Maybe you can get Marshall to send you one. I also just traded for the 2525h Jubilee. The whole studio series is great. Recently I’ve thought about heading down that Marshall highway as well. This model popped up on my radar and I definitely am interested in grabbing one. I feel like a lot of the other demos of this amp seemed a bit stale and like they were trying really hard to get a good sound. You’re nailing tone easily. I’m definitely going to grab one of these and probably just ad a pedal in front to kick it a bit more and get a little modified modern tone mixed into it. Then again when you hit that 9:17 mark, it’s pretty damn close to what I’m wanting! Awesome video!

I do quite like the slight overdrive-ish sound you from the amp get with the gain at the low to medium setting. Great Review of this amp! Your playing really complimented the amp and vice versa. You answered the questions that bedroom guitarists want to know. Best review of the this amp hands down. Thanks!

I got the Origin 50C awhile back, sounded great so I now also have the 50H with 2 Origin 4x12 cabs, sounds great too. I don't use pedals with it except an occasional GEQ (Source Audio EQ2). Spot on about the power section, my presence is at max, and the master is at least 8 or higher; everything else dial in for your sound and your guitar. I also agree the gain boost makes it wooly so I don't use it. Good demo, and some good sounds. For the price of the SV20, real or reissue plexi, the Origin works great for me. Cheers!

I had the Origin 50 and had to sell it. Little to no gain. Just my opinion. I have the DSL 20 and love it.

This Marshall's eq seems more active than the actual vintage Marshall Plexi, which doesn't feel like the eq does much..
@voided763 жыл бұрын
you say that, but compared to most modern amps the origin's EQ is weak as well. it's just not as weak sauce as a JMP/Plexi

Just picked one of these. I really value your opinion. Mainly because I agree.😂. Some criticism is based around the idea that the bass is too clubby or there’s too much high end and so forth. I agree with your statement that this is a great amp with a highly interactive tone control. I does take time to get used to. I brought it home and let it sit without turning it on for about a week. I had other obligations. Since then I’ve had time to spend about 20-30 minutes at a time to play with this dude! I believe it’s important to have a couple of gadgets to help you get the most out of it. I have a speaker soak and a pre amp. That way I can crank it up without disrupting my kids from their bedroom gaming experience.😂 The pre amp allows me to have that third boost setting for the ZZ Top/Jake E Lee/EVH sort of thing. So yeah it’s the trendy sort of thing but it’s not a TUBE SCREAMER (touché)! Lately I’ve been pulling the gain down to 6-7 and the master on 8-9. It’s really amazing how different this is from diming everything on “eleven”. Anyway, hope this helps. Yeah. Apparently Mikel B is the only person/KZbinr who understands what a true plexi sounds like 😂(❤ya Mikel!!!). I share as heck don’t. But man this things sounds like a Marshall and a good one at that. Cheers!!!

I'v had a bunch of marshall amps & bought this to do something different. I have a 4-12 marshall cab with 100 hundred watt 16 ohm 1970 eminance spk wired to the 16 ohm output. This makes the amp all most imposable to distort making it perfect for pedals in the studio (which is were it lives). I have tried it with a 4-12 20 watt green backs & it does the live marshall thing perfect. just my 2 cents.

The head is the way to go. The speaker in the combo...eh.
@corneliuscrewe6773 жыл бұрын
The speaker in the combo gets better and is usable, but you aren’t exactly wrong. I replaced mine with a Creamback, much much better. Still sounds best through a 4x12, though.

Lmao love the video dude! I haven't ever owned a marshall either but I love the clones and knock offs haha cheers EDIT: I own this amp now and it’s awesome, use it with a creamback. Seriously loud too

Hey Dan Thanks for awesome the demo! I have the 20 head as well. Any advice on getting Skynyrd tones? I know lower gain, but I'm having a hard time nailing that tone with my Les Paul. I'm talking before they switched From Marshall to Peaveys lol.

I picked up a used 50 watt one, returned it after a week. Couldn't get a good hard rock/metal sound without help from pedals. My Bugera g20 sounds so much better, and it has 2 channels and a digital reverb.

I just don't understand the hate on these bad boys. It may be coming from people expecting master volume magic at low volumes, which is never the way I run an amp. I crank all my amps. That is how a rock amp should be handled. I have the 50 and also own a beautiful JTM Plexi. I love them both. The Origin is so much bang for the buck. Just a great sounding rock & roll amp.

Feeling the urge to go down the Marshall road? Really? I luv lots of music, and especially from the 60's, 70's, and 80's and so Marshall & Fender amps are a must have IMO.

not great amps lack s o much when compared to a plexi..ive a 50 i liked it then i plugged in my plexi and went oh i see....but you can do the mods from jason from headfirst amps does and it will become a convincing 800.forget plexi tones aint gonna happen lacks that all important halo plexi has but 800 tones after mods killer i did my 50 its good now.also for a kid starting out id recommend it.imagine a plexi without low mid halo hump and this is it. jason at headfirst amplification is the guy you need to make these real cheers ps its not volume my plexi studio 20 wipes the floor with my 50 origin.different circuit
