I've probably seen a couple hundred or so guitar reviews on YTube, and this is probably my favorite. Oddly oodles better than his 'official' review of this same guitar. A parlour guitar in the parlour. Ancient comparative D-18 put to shame. Scott Joplin. Conversational parlay from ppl who know guitars. And God I want one of these. Cool guys. Love the tape on the ProKeds.

You really get an idea of what the Dreadnought and Jumbo bodies did to the tone after hearing one of these O Models and their ringing treble notes. I owned a D-42 and it was simply crystal clear. The O-18 has the same clarity but with much of the bass response not present. Gotta tell ya though, during your shootout, both of those Martins sounded great, just different. Enjoyed the video!

I reckon that will change with age as the instrument opens up. It won't have the full bottom end but will be really well balanced. My wife has a recently made 00-18 style that is somewhat similar. It replaces a 1942 00-18 she used to own and is also modeled on Tim O'Brien's signature Martin 00-18 with a longer scale length. Tim's has opened up and is much woodier and deeper sounding than Steve Earl's virtually untouched Tim model. Speaking of which, last seen, that Earl guitar is still for sale at Carter's in Nashville, it being July 5, 207. Priced a bit high but you could use it having been on the rack for many moons as a bargaining lever...

The non-dreadnought Martins get the short shrift at times. I had an amazing early production HD28V and I got to handle my buddy's D42JC and D45, but I also like me a real good OM21 about as much.

Hey John...love the "at home" setting and the Sister Rosetta Tharpe print on the wall. Respect! And thank you for the great reviews/run downs...your direct honesty and unvarnished approach really gives a sense of your experience/interpretation. Question - As I am considering a smaller body guitar, can you offer an opinion/comparison of this Marting O-18 and the Gibson Keb Mo Blues Master? Peace brother.

Hey John, here's a threat: go check out Claire Lynch. She has a Bluegrass act and three Grammy nominations to her credit. Watch for her current guitar players Bryan McDowell and Jarrod Walker. Not saying your magazine isn't wonderful, but I was a fan of Guitar Player since its beginning and really lost interest when it lost sight of the broader realm of guitar players while it pandered to the manufacturers of electrics and electronics. I hope you and yours see a way to keep the broader world of guitar playing before the punters. So thanks for that review of the Martin 0-18. Keep it coming!

@torontolarrivee79657 жыл бұрын
You want something with a shorter scale. This 0-18 would be a good idea. Or a less expensive parlour guitar. Recording King makes some nice ones that are not expensive.

Probably any guitar with 1 11/16" nut and a short scale which is a very lot of guitars. One is the Taylor GS Mini. (Full scale is 25.5 inches. Short scale is under 25 inches or even less like the Mini has a scale length under 24 inches.

@joem12567 жыл бұрын
I haven't played one of those in a number of years, but back in the 90's, that standard OM-21 was probably the best bang for the buck that you could get in a higher end acoustic guitar.

I cannot believe how much they are charging for these. You can find vintage ones for the same price. But also, its a small parlor sized guitar, which is a stripped down model. But I don't know how you can compare a parlor to a dreadnaught.. Its like no comparison.

Sound is not good; too much room reverb. Not good when the cameraman is loud while subject is muffled. Let's hear the instrument; not the cameraman. Earlier setting and format was more instructive. But very much enjoyed your "Entertainer" rag; never seen you play this style before.
@rmoodyist7 жыл бұрын
Well, the sound is actually deep and rich. Easy to understand how some with a "professional's ear", might confuse intonation for "room reverb". Might I suggest an alternative format to the insufferability (??) ) of listening to a great sounding guitar from the comfort of your listening device. Guitar Center offers the music aficionado a totally sterile-impersonal, jive fueled listening experience. "The professional's choice."
@arbogash18524 жыл бұрын
To me, I like it this way because mentally I can gauge additively and subtractively based on the guitar sound versus the other sounds present. I mean, would you rather be standing one foot from the soundhole?

If you guys don't like Martin then don't buy one. They are expensive for a reason.. they're good. Sorry, but I don't see Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Springsteen Tom Petty on stage with anything but Martin, Taylor, Gibson, Takamine... probably for a reason.
@willgo78987 жыл бұрын
also ... a Martin like this one, will hold its value better than most others. These are great guitars, and if bought "right" are a great value.
