Acoustic Scale Length Comparison! Martin's 000-28 vs OM-28

Lindsay from Maple Street discusses and plays the Martin 000-28 and OM28. These two guitars are very similar spec-wise, but we take a look at how big a difference scale length makes on a guitar.

The difference in sound isn’t just in the scale length. The bracing is different. 1/4” for the OM and 5/16” for the 000.

Nice demo. I was surprised that I could hear a difference, namely that the OM model with the longer scale produced a clearer sound when finger picked and with drop D tuning.

Yes, bracing! Most OM vs. 000 don't even mention it! They miss probably the most important aspect.

To my ear the Om sounds brighter, the 000-28 Martins sounds like there is a bass undertone warmth. I personally love them both! Thanks for the comparisons video!

I own both and can’t decide which I like better. Short scale is of course easier to play but the OM has bite and projection. Just depends on your needs I suppose.

One factor here is that the long scale gives a tighter string and thus can be set lower to the fretboard, which I find makes it easier to play than the short scale.

Both are lovely, but for me the 000-28 has a warmer tone that I like. Both of them are warmer than the new Modern Deluxe series. I'm likely going to buy a 000-28.

The problem is the pick guard on the OM does not cover the area that scratches the top of the guitar with the pick and the OOO model does.

Each guitar has different tone even completely the same model. Basically I prefer OM-28 resonance.

Juan, we're continually working to improve our video content, particularly the audio. We've learned a lot about our equipment since we shot this video and newer videos will feature louder volume. But on this one, I'm afraid you'll have to turn it up!

Chris, we're continually working to improve the quality of our videos as we only have so much in the way of time and resources. Audio has been our #1 concern and I think our videos are already much better in this regard. But it's all still a work in progress :)

Our camera has very low headroom which results in a lower signal to noise ratio. This is something we're working towards improving.
