The Purple Spotted Gudgeon is pretty uncommon here on Long Island. Have you ever owned one of these before? If you have, what was your experience? If you haven't, have you ever even seen one before?

Amazing aquarium fish. Beautiful, personable, hardy, peaceful Pretty much ticks all the boxes. They are not very agressive at all. Think angelfish level of "agression" Now what they ARE is gluttonous predators that will hunt down anything they can fit (even partially) into their mouths. Ive caught one of mine choking on a young strawberry leporinus that was about half his size. Something odd i have noticed is that this predotory nature definitely variable by individual and has specific triggers. I have mine now in a 75gal with cories and empire gudgeons that he could definitely at least get a hold of, but their bottom feeder/slow swimming/seclusive behavior has them never really catch his attention. I think the are especially triggered by fast moving panicking open water fish, typically ones just being added to the tank. Generally fish that instantly hide in cover after being added are ignored, but open water fish that aren't comfortable with hiding like tetras and danios and stuff are seen as food. This of course is no issue if you just stock comparibly sized fish and fish with deep bodies, which is not hard as these guys get 5 inches max. Now for personality, these are extremely friendly fish to the keeper, they can be touched more than most outher fish and i can even scoop mine out of the water with my hand when feeding. If he gets tired of it he'll just flop back into the water, but ive held him out of the water for multiple seconds before he wants to go back in. The would prefer a 55-75 gallon tank, but a 40 breeder could work. Also one last health note is that they can be succeptible to bloating like bettas and some gouramis. In my experience at least and thats what they tend to end up dying of. The one I have is naturally skinny and never holds a big belly for long, so he is much better.

I just bought one as I thought he was unique and a good addition to my 65 gallon tank. I love watching him and I can't wait for him to get more comfortable and seek me out. Still need to learn more about him, but he's doing well. Thanks for the info on yours.

Im in australia, I caught an awesome looking purple spotted gudgeon in a fish trap at a local creek, put a piece of clear apolic in my tank to separate it from my coal grunter I had at the time, woke up in the morning and it had jumped over the apolic into the coal grunters side, he died, I was so pissed

He is a really cool looking fish. Killifish are mad jumpers too. I have even lost a swordtail that jumped to his death. It’s not a good sign when your fish jump to their death rather than stay with you. Lol.

In my experience with these guys i have found them to have variable aggression. Keeping them with plenty of fast moving targets will lessen their aggresion toward their slower tankmates,, however I have seen specimens with the attitude of a red devil or jaguar cichlid, not even accepting a former mate

I've literally had hundreds of these fish over the years, their my favourite. If they have plenty of cover and can see peaceful fish swimming overhead they are generally non aggressive (except at breeding time). However there is the very rare one that is super aggressive. I've had a couple that attacked and killed Corys and even much bigger Purple Spotted Gudgeons.

It's not aggressive in the sense that it sets up territory in the tank and fights. It's aggressive in the sense that it will swallow fish 3/4's of it's size. Dwarf cichlids for example would be a bad choice of tank mate, apart from fish as big as large kribensis because it will attack and kill them; and then it will eat them. Males will kill each other, and when breeding it will set up a nest in wood and guard it like a cichlid would. The reason it works in your tank is the cichlids are bigger than it. If it has to, it will defend itself.
