First Look: The Brand New Cartier Tank Francaise is a Paragon of Sports Chicness

In 1996, Cartier the unrivalled King of Elegance, introduced the Tank Francaise, the first Tank with an integrated bracelet design which had gradually been gaining traction since the 1970s. It took the classicism of form from its icon of icons, the Tank, and married it with a bracelet that was at once masculine in its angularity and yet the overall aesthetic evoked a feminine romanticism. The Tank Francaise was very much of its time, epitomising the sports chic sense of style.

Cartier truly is the king of elegance. Having a few pairs of Cartier cufflinks I thought it was time to add a Cartier watch to my small collection. I have always liked the Tank Francaise so I took a closer look at the new model. And also at the Tank Americaine. The decision was not an easy one and I went for the Americaine in medium size.

I walked into the store to buy the new Française medium...I did not like it on the wrist. The brushed brancards were too bland. It lacked a bit of flash and flair. I can see why it would work better in gold. I walked out with a Santos medium. 😅 ps: I did like the Must but the second the Santos hit my wrist, I was down hard 😂

Sorry, but the previous version was nicer. This design works much better for men but the movement is disappointing so i perssonally wont buy this tank francaise and will stick with the santos. The previous design was always a big seller for the female audience and men could also pull it off. Now, with the brushed finishing and the redesign, it lost some of that elegance. A woman in a dress wont be able to pull off the dressy look as well as she would have with the previous design. Every woman Ive spoken to about this watch that was a cartier brand fan and not a watch collector has told me they prefer the older model. If a working women wants a dressy entry level cartier on a bracelet it feels like all they have now is the panthere.
