Gérald Genta’s unique design language took the watch industry by storm in the 1970s and was primarily defined by polarizing case shapes with angular lines and integrated bracelets. Even today, there is something uniquely retro about his masterpieces.
Everything Genta touched turned to gold. So much so that many top brands called on Genta to dream up watches for their portfolios, including Audemars Piguet, Cartier, Patek Philippe, and even Rolex.
That brings us to the Rolex Cellini King Midas, designed by the master himself.
With its asymmetrical case and flat-link integrated bracelet, the King Midas is unlike anything Rolex has ever produced. That can explain why the Big Crown ultimately chose to house the limited edition watch within the luxurious Cellini collection.
A GOLDEN MASTERPIECE
As the Story goes, the appropriately named King Midas was crafted from a single block of gold and was the heaviest gold watch on the market at the time, clocking in between 150 and 200 grams.
Its unique silhouette is heavily inspired by the legend of Midas and the Parthenon temple of Athena in Greece. If you lay the watch on its side, it resembles the temple's peak as it tapers down to descending columns - a design that is nothing short of genius.
Genta kept the dial modest so as not to detract from the stunning lines of the case and bracelet. While there are a few iterations of the watch, one of the most common sports is a matching golden watch face decorated with two centrally mounted hands, the Rolex logo at 12 o’clock, and the Midas logo in Greek letters.
Additionally, depending on the reference number, “King Midas” is engraved on either side of the crown. The collection also features a reliable hand-wound movement and a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.
What’s also interesting about this iconic gold Rolex is that it is a left-handed watch with the crown on the opposite side of the case. In Greek mythology, everything the greedy King touched with his left hand turned gold. This, of course, has since inspired the term “Midas Touch.”
Some of the most notable past wearers include John Wayne and the King himself, Elvis Pressley. While John Wayne’s model was sold at auction, Pressley’s King Midas is displayed at his former home in Graceland.
The King Midas is certainly the watch to buy if you’re searching for a gold Rolex that holds its value well and embraces a bold aesthetic. And we have the perfect example for sale in our inventory. Buy this unique Rolex before it’s gone!
