When I was a young boy and aspired to move to the US to study during the 70s, Neil and men/women like him, were the ones that inspired me. The US used to produce amazing people across all walks of life that encouraged and inspired many of us in developing countries. That strength and leadership is unfortunately long gone.

Watching the movie "Man on the Moon " reminded us of a great pilot who wrote history in space exploration eventhough the movie was not as great as was it was expected . This is one of the best documentaries seen in a long time in the era of fake news, loss of family ,society and spiritual values .Neil is gone, not however his soul which is preserved with us for the time we are still here, Neil was an ordinary man and of ordinary times a true American hero and maybe the best pilot we ever saw .

Funny how the people who believe the moon landings never happened always use the Van Allen Belt as 'proof' that people couldn't travel to the moon. They refuse to believe people walked on the moon, but the 'Van Allen Belt, something they haven't seen before, and never will, they will believe that... Great documentary. @andrew tones Dr James Van Allen was never in NASA employ. He remained until his death an employee of the University of Iowa en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Van_Allen#. The scientific paper announcing the discovery of the Van Allen Radiation Belts was published under the auspices of the University of Iowa. NASA releases to the same effect were public announcements to the media which are not viewed as authoritative.

I feel so privileged to have lived in that part of the world that astronauts made their home during the Gemini and Apollo programs. For a few years my daily commute took me along NASA Road 1 past JSC. The quick way to work from Taylor Lake Village to Webster was simply to stay on NASA, but I always left a couple mins earlier so I could take the slightly more scenic route onto Saturn Ln, passing by the Saturn V and the Rocket Park. Sometimes I'd go past Neil's and Janet's old place in El Lago, just because I could. It doesn't take much imagination to put yourself in Clear Lake back in those days. There are reminders everywhere, from the school named after Ed White to Deke Slayton Pkwy.

Yes anita he forged a great life which he lived to the full. It all stemmed from and early age,where his father took him on a plane ride and his lifelong love of flight was kindled. It wasn't without his share of tragedy though,he lost his baby daughter to cancer during the build up of the apollo project. But over came that and went on to achieve something very special in our human history.

I think Mr Armstrong if he was still alive would turn away from the adulation that you (and I) bestow upon his memory. He saw himself as an engineer/test pilot just doing his job and his duty to the best of his ability. Apollo 11 was a test flight that just coincidentally entailed landing a vehicle on the Moon! There are numerous events in his test pilot portfolio though that would indicate a level of commitment and technical acumen that were extraordinary. Dave Scott his copilot on Gemini 8 attributes his long life to Armstrong's superhuman feat under extreme pressure of realising the cause of the inadvertant high speed spin to a failure in the primary guidance system and then to precisely operate switches above his head to disengage the malfunctioning system and engage the landing guidance system in a problem solving feat that had not be practised in simulators beforehand. Buzz Aldrin the only astronaut with degrees in computing was absolutely flabbergasted by Armstrong's casual comment that the Eagle's powered descent was running long to that expected only a short time after PDI which was later born out to be correct. Armstrong based his comment 'simply' by matching landmarks below with time from PDI, in reality a stupendous intuitive feat requiring the most intimate knowledge of the predicted flightpath over the lunar terrain. His cool matter-of-fact handling of the 1202, 1201 bailout alarms still leaves me tingling 50 years later as very few at the time realised that the onboard computer was experiencing a data overload that could have ended in disaster at any moment. Aldrin bravely kept to his duties to support his commander while his commander dealt in real time with a real potential show stopper, their dialogue with the ground giving absolutely nothing away to the audience at home. Absolutely incredible! I shall not forget Mr Armstrong as long as I live as an aviator/astronaut with few equals. Thank you for your post.

Yes, pretty amazing guy. If you haven't seen the interview he did in Australia in 2011, I highly recommend it. It's great to see him much more relaxed while talking to the interviewer. I read the book "First Man" when it first came out but in the interview he mentions a pretty harrowing incident that's not in the book about a B-29 mothership incident. I was a ten year old when I sat down on the school library carpet with my fellow school mates and watched on tv as a man descended a ladder and stepped onto the moon. For the first time in my then short life I saw all my school teachers in tears...tears of happiness, awe and thanks. Humanity had evolved and striven hard to accomplish this great feat of daring, of engineering and science. For us kids it was the beginning of a new age...a "can do" time wherein we thought we would soon be taking commuter flights to the moon and that we would soon be on Mars. Sadly the fire went out in the belly of humanity's need to explore further and the Apollo program was cancelled...what a sad thing for us all. Neil Armstrong was a true hero in every sense of the word. He was a great inspiration and had a heart the size of Texas. What a good thing that he was the first. I'm sure he will be urging us on from heaven and wanting NASA to push the envelope once again for all of humanity. Mars awaits and then the stars.

Neil Armstrong was rightly chosen to be the first man to walk on the moon . A cool calm and collected individual with extreme confidence and skill to pilot anything . Those final moments where he manually flew the LEM over the rocky luna terrain is must watch footage . As for Moon hoax believers - your opinions do not make one iota of difference to NASA and other space agencies , they will continue to keep developing , researching , planning , training and launching missions now and into the future . The Apollo program was indeed well ahead of its time , super expensive , utilising cutting edge technology that cannot be denied . One positive thing conspiracy theorists have achieved and that is cause people like myself to research more deeply into space fight and the various technologies developed over the decades . I don't just believe NASA put men on the moon - I know they did ! My ambition is to one day travel from Australia to America to witness the launch of the next moon missions - whenever that is . It's time to go back .

amazing pilot ,the film 1st man had a guy on a sort of deathwish,which weirdly got more done than protocol did,any other LEM pilot would have aborted on 1201/02 alarms plus 1% fuel ,The death of his daughter affected him hugely,can see why he didnt like human beings ,whether you believe or not - SEE 1ST MAN its a great film ,opening scene shows this mans bravery - testing an X15 was not something you pay 6 quid a month for life insurance on- the music for the landing is just perfect & it pisses on Apollo 13 ,im not a believer but i did like the guy he was hard to dislike ....watch the film

I'm sure the movie makers took some liberties with how they portrayed him and his approach to life and his profession. I would tend to take their portrayal with "a grain of salt". That said, I'm sure the death of his little one haunted him, as it would any parent. It's such a testament to his character that he was able to overcome this (and other) huge hurdles, continuing to focus and methodically execute his demanding duties day after day, month after month, year after year... Until he walked on the moon! Incredible soul. RIP

To watch the first press conference on there return from the moon, I would be bouncing off walls doing backflips and have a big smile on my face that stretched for miles maybe to the moon 😁 as we just accomplished mans biggest challenge in history. But watching the conference was like they just returned from a funeral was actually really painful to watch 😩

I have nothing personal against Neil or any of the astronauts aboard Apollo 11. But looking at it objectively it's very unlikely we ever set foot on the moon. They seemed very disappointed and beat down during their interviews and sometimes even appeared to be hinting at it being staged. For instance, Neil's cryptic speech "there are breakthroughs available to those who can remove truth's protective layers" and the fact that he compared himself to a parrot, then jokingly said "and parrots don't fly very well". What else do parrots do? - Repeat what they're told.

A huge liar who was excellent at keeping a straight face. No video of any astronauts putting on their backpacks in the LEM or CSM. No video of Neil climbing up the ladder from the moon and into the LEM. They had moon dust on their moon suits inside the LEM but no mention how radioactive it was or the fake moon rocks.
