Thanks, Shane! We need shades for our new screened porch, but the options we've seen so far cost several thousand $$. SmartWings prices are a few hundred for each one - significantly less, plus the advantage of being smart. So glad to know about them!

Please post an exterior pic of the window so we may see impact of the solar panel. Thanks.
@tharais Жыл бұрын
Shane: Just a couple of notes about solar panel placements: I found out the hard way that putting them up as far as possible to hide them better may cost you in function. Roof overhang (eves) and even window trim, can cast a shadow in summer, when the sun is at its highest arc that keeps them shaded. Even when the windows are south facing. Bottom line, consider sun exposure along with the esthetics when placing them. And, on sliding or double hung windows. the thickness of the solar panel mounted on the inside of the fixed half of the window glass will interfere with the full opening of the moving panel and restrict how far it can open. Bottom line, mount the solar panel on the moving glass half of the window when possible and get the cord to drape alongside the inner frame of the window when it is fully closed.

Question for you Shane… In my previous house I had a couple Lutron Serena shades, and as much as I would love to put them in my new house, I sadly can’t afford that many (looking at ordering 20). How would you say they compare to the Serena shades? (Noise level, speed, how well they stay in sync with other shades) Great video, btw!
@ShaneCreates5 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. I always say that Lutron Serena is the best. They are amazing. If budget allows for it, I don't think you'll ever be disappointed with them. That said, they are EXTREMELY expensive, so shades like these from Smart Wings is a great mid-tier. Still very good quality and fully customizable. Lutron roller shades are probably a little quieter, but not enough to justify the huge price difference (in my opinion). To me, the most noticeable difference is how well they stay in sync. Smart Wings, and all others that I've tested, cannot compare to Lutron in that area. I think that is what you are paying for if you decide to go with Lutron over something like Smart Wings.
@hardwarecompugeek5 ай бұрын
@@ShaneCreates thanks for the reply! Just an FYI, SmartWings will give you a discount for big orders. They’re giving me 20% off just for ordering 20, so they come out even cheaper when you’re doing a big order. I really wish I could install Serena, but when I quoted it out, it was going to be around $16k. The SmartWings equivalent is only $6k.

Did anyone check the manual for a QR code? SwitchBot Blind Tilts have a copy of the QR code there. Which is great.......as long as you remember to label the front of each manual as to which one corresponds to which blind. Something I failed to do in my haste to get those puppies up and running.

Loved the pun on Matter at end of the video, very funny Shane 😂. How do these compare to IKEA blinds though I wonder?
@ShaneCreates Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I can’t really compare because I haven’t used the IKEA shades much. I tried them a few years ago and had a bad experience. Returned them and haven’t given them another try since. I know some people like them, they just weren’t for me. IKEA certainly won’t have the customization options that you have here.

ANy suggestions for a smart shade or blind that works on a door with a full length window? (Exterior Door)
@silvahawk14 күн бұрын
should i have to add an extra inch in height to the measurement to account for the shade not fully touching the bottom of the windows frame (and can calibrate it later) or I should not worry about that?
@ShaneCreates13 күн бұрын
I would not worry about it. I would measure exactly how they recommend on the website and input those measurements when customizing your order.

Nice video. Thanks. I have a ton of experience using Hunter Douglas Powerview via HomeKit, so smart home is pretty much all I want (Regarding Hunter Douglas: Just say no). Question though. Smartwings says you need at least one remote to set up the shades. I don't want a remote if I don't need it for smart home stuff. You mention it being optional. Did you find you needed the remote to set the blinds up?
@ShaneCreates6 ай бұрын
I believe you can set up the blinds now without the remote... essentially you put the blinds into pairing mode and add them to your smart home. I'm not sure about setting/changing the open and closed positions though. Might be possible without a remote. Either way, I will say having the remote makes all of that a lot easier. I'd recommend getting a remote, even if it's just for setup, troubleshooting, and/or occasional use.

Something I do because the QR code can be annoying when you need to repair a device. Take a picture of the QR codes and save it to a notes app with all you other codes...then you just open note app...click and hold the picture and you will have option to add to home kit from there.

Thank you! Is the motor/battery visible? I haven’t been able to tell in these videos or on their website where the battery is… assuming I don’t use solar… it looks well hidden here but couldn’t be certain?
@JohnnyLeuthard Жыл бұрын
Can you manually pull the shades down? I'm thinking of an example that there is a really long span of not enough sun and you have the solar option and you are ready for bed want to close the blionds and there is not enough juice to close them. Can you just pull them down to close them or are you stuck with blinds that will not close?
@chrisrioux2 ай бұрын
I’d imagine you could plug them in to charge, go brush your teeth, and by the time you’re done getting ready for bed, they’d have enough juice to at least unroll/block the window, but this is just a guess based on how quickly my other devices seem to charge a dead battery to 15% or so).

Hi Shane, I have some question. I am confused about matter. Matter is management standart protocol but we need a communication protocol like that wifi, zigbee or thread? Is it correct? If I remember corret you mention before thread isnt stable now and you have some problem with thread supported product. What do you think about that?
@ShaneCreates Жыл бұрын
Yes that's correct, Matter is the "application layer" and utilizes various protocols including wifi, ethernet, and thread. I'd recommend watching a recent video I made a couple weeks ago on Matter and my whole experience this year with it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/naaTlXako9Zsoa8
