Great congrats, Le me give you some little advices of an old pike fly fishermen (more than 20 years now). First Your casting is very accurate and that is really important (more than distance), If you want to progress, try to have a basket line (no problem of tangling anymore), now the most important, try during fishing action do not twitch with your rod (you can twitch with poppers because the action is on surface but not with fly under the surface), because you loose the contact with your fly and if the fish takes when you have the slack he release immediately and you feel nothing. This is the reason why do not put angle when you retrieve you must be in the direct the rod tip touching the water (any slack is not good in predator fishing especially with percidae, I also fish zander and this point is critical with them because they release almost immediately when they feel something wrong, we loose a lot of fish because we fish in big rivers at deep with WF8 Sinking 9 at more than 5 meter of deep frequently) and finally try the strip strike, of course sometimes the normal contre strike works, but it is better to feel the predator on the hand line and stripping to set the hook after you feel the weigh you put a second contre strike with the rod. The fly rods are not really made to do "trout" contre strikes with predator (especially glass rods what are more flexible) what have a so tough mouth. Advantage if you feel the fish, you strip strike, the fish is not on, your fly have not disappear for him (lift the rod and your fly travel of more than 1 meter and the fish loose his target), 30 cm and the fish could strike again. I am not a hater it is just advice of some young fly fishermen I admire very much (for your fantastic trout fishing). I am not a muskie fishermen because I live in Europe but I have catch lot of good predators on flies (Pikes, zander, perch). An observation of your fly, first I feel that she is fantastic, some points, that is not necessary to put three hooks, two are sufficient, but if you want to increase your hook rate try to put the second one in another plane (the problem of grasping predators, as pikes they grab the prey fast and shut the mouth, the hook is flat in their mouth and sometime it pulls of. My little trick is to change a little (less than 10° the angle of the point) and the best advice, no barb, easier to release, easier to pull out when it is unfortunately in your finger or your hand (a 6/0 is enormous!) and better for hook rating. All the best.

Thanks for the advice!! We are by no means expert musky (or large predator) anglers. We have caught musky many times on conventionally gear and just thought it would be fun to try out. I think a lot of the “mistakes” that were made in this video was just from years of streamer fishing for brown trout. Especially with something like the strip set. Either way thank you for watching and taking the time to type out this comment! We’ll definitely take it to the water next time we’re out there.

@@hardmanfishing If my modest advices are useful for you, I be proud. Don't take that as "mistakes", there are simply things to increase efficiency. Do you see my comment about your largest trout on the other video, It is probably a Salmo trutta lacustris or lacustran one. There are the largest brown trout by far (sometimes 15 kilos especially in Dranse in France and in Iceland). If you have catch one there are possibilities there are much more.

Awesome day of Muskie fishing and congrats on the first! Some pointers going forward when you start targeting the bigger fish start practicing strip setting the hook. “Trout setting” will sometimes pull the hook out of the fish’s mouth or you won’t get a good hook set and the fish will throw the hook.

When a fish follows a presentation but fails to strike at it, natural instincts tell it that what they are looking at is not something they are used to feeding on. I think the best approach is to offer them a different target at that point.

This is so sick!! I’m gonna be going to grad school at WVU this coming summer right on the Monongahela R., I can’t wait to try this out on the smaller tribs! What pattern would you say the streamer you tied most closely resembles? I’m dying to tie one up myself and try it out!
@limoucheu8522
@limoucheu8522 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know the exact formula of this streamer but it is simple. Bucktail, normal mount, a little pinch of flashabou, , chenille flash, more flash, bucktail reverse, and predator dubbing in reverse, done (lot of glue!!!!) (if you want you can put this on the hook and do the same on a shank (I never put two hooks on this type of fly). Or bunny fly, a tail in rabbit, big nylon to avoid tangling, wrap a second rabbit strip along the hook, done (it takes pikes, sanders, perch and cat fish of more than 80 kilos in Europe).

Well that is just about the coolest thing ever! No Grey Muskellunge in Colorado. We only have hybrid Tiger Muskies. Great looking fly. Question, you guys ever try fly fishing for Carp?
@limoucheu8522
@limoucheu8522 3 жыл бұрын
You can fish Cyprinus carpio with floating flies and nymphs. 8 weight could be a minimum if you have correct fish and a very very good reel with good backing capacity (especially in open water because the carps are frequently as strong as tuna). If you are in a pond, you can imitate the surface food of carps (someone does it in england) they cast some food and put a fly what is an imitation of food. If you want to be more as a "fly guy" you can observe sign of activity on the surface and bellow and propose a dry (imitation of bread or a salmon egg) or a big nymph. sometimes when you have no visual contact we can use a strike indicator. This is the way we fish the carp in Europe.

@limoucheu8522

@@OpportunityFishing Of course if you fish in a place where you knows the type of food propose an imitation of the local food (this is the base of fly fishing) Small crayfish especially when they loose their carapace are soft and really appreciate by the fishes. A small articulated crayfish could be a really good "nymph" for carp.
