The first oil change should be at 500 to 1,000 miles. This is common knowledge. The oil filter on my 23 trd had plenty of break-in metal and silicone. After the next oil change, apon inspection oil filte was free of debris. Toyota is stupid for recommending the first change to be at 10,000 miles.

Another great video. Almost 8200 miles on mine and I am gambling and doing the first oil change in about a month before I take the truck on a trip for hunting. So sticking to the Toyota recommended. During that trip, will add an easy another 2000+ miles on the truck. We will see but so far I have not had a single issue (knock on wood) with mine.

I think that is a very smart move on your part, especially if you want an engine to last. I do mine the same. I can't understand why anyone who knows anything about motors would do 10K oil changes. But to each his own.

@@davidwilliams2211 When the engine starts to burn oil. All the promises made by oil company and dealers will just vanish. I talked to an engineer from Toyota and advice me that if I wanted to last my engine 15 years or more, I should change my oil every 3K miles. I came from 10K interval with amsoil and replace it with Mobil 1. I bought a device that I could look into my cylinder heads via camera and saw how clean it is with the 3K oil interval. My current millage is 115K miles and never had a problem .

It never ceases to amaze me how DYI weekend mechanics don’t have common sense to properly protect their hands and skin from hazmat oil being drained from an engine just about a hour or so in order to let a hot engine cool down and then it’ll drain fully into some catch basin… Having worked on Porsches, Volkswagens and my Toyota trucks for last 52 years has actually given the professional sheepskin of my own Safety First… C’est la vie

Minor correction, Silicon is in the oil tested, not silicone, Silicon is a metal (Si) on the periodic table, same thing microchips are made of. Silicon is pronounced with an "ON" sound and silicone is like "OWN" sound on the end. Which makes me now wonder if they have ways or tests that actually test for silicone particulates and other gasket materials? I've never seen them on oil tests, i guess those are soft and wouldn't really damage the engine. But then again their description at the top is clearly talking about silicone.....maybe it is a typo on their part. But are they testing for the metal or the synthetic material. Maybe whoever wrote the top part was thinking silicone but they only test for silicon.
@JulietHotelFoxtrotАй бұрын
That oil was barely in grade. I think you ran it right up to the very edge of what it should've been. Unless that formulation has changed recently, Toyota used a very low viscosity base oil and juiced it with a lot of viscosity index improvers. Those things wear out either chemically or mechanically in time. The silicon is nothing to be concerned about. Unless you have a bad air filter and it's leaking past. When you look at metals, don't look at the absolute number. Look at ppm per thousand miles. It takes about two oil changes before you can really make a determination on whether the oil works for your engine. Thing to consider, the only reason Toyota specs 0W 20 in these engines because they have to. That's what it was certified on for the fuel economy. The government does not allow them to even recommend another type of oil if the certification was done with 0W 20. Had they chosen to use a 5W-30 in their certification, that would've been the oil they would've been required to use. The differences between 0W 20 and 5w30 is absolutely minuscule but they're talking about fleetwide numbers they have to meet those targets, hence fighting for every .1% If you're still see elevated wear rates, consider moving up a grade. 5w-30. Or if you deal with *extreme* cold, 0W 30.

52 seconds into your video, you’re showing your maintenance log. You said your first oil change is not till 10,000 miles. If you look at the column next to it, it says 5000 miles or six months. Halfway down the page it says replace engine oil and filter.

@@kidwelldavid6136 yes but that’s for “special operating conditions” like dirt roads. 10k miles is the first scheduled oil change according to Toyota in normal driving conditions.

Absolutely no reason to run oil analysis on original fill. Break in metals and materials will always be high and provide you no insight/anything to compare to. 2nd drain will also have residual from 1st fill and skew numbers as well.
