It's time for the GT4's first oil change. Oddly, the manual doesn't specify how much oil this thing takes. The 718 requires you to take off quite a few of the underbody panels in order to access the drain bolt and oil filter. The worst part of this job is just taking off the panels.
The GT4 requires a specific C40 spec of oil. I used MOTUL 8100 X-clean 5w-40. I quite like the design of these MOTUL bottles.

@@pourmog From Porsche techs here in the us and euro spec the GPF have a self cleaning bimetallic elements that will not last as long without this specific oil whether it is monitored or not. It is still the same GPF.

Great video Matt. I just did mine yesterday. The only thing that I would add is that front (towards the front of the car) most panel tucks under the rear subframe where it connect to the middle panel. You put the rear panel on top of the subframe ears.

All that aluminum and back bracing , Porsche not playing around anymore, very legit platform! Also that's nice the filter goes straight up I would pre fill it also so you get no dry starts !

There are 6 larger torx screws for the rear diffuser and 17 smaller torx screws for the undertrays plus 4 10 mm hex head bolts that secures the undertray panels. As you've discovered a scissor lift is not as useful as a 2 posts asymmetric arm lift which provides much easier access to all the screws and hardware. A word of warning regarding overfilling with oil. Porsche engines prefer to be slightly less than full oil level and oil expands when hot so if the level is measured when cold means overfilled when oil heats up.

Quick tip for oil choices: Most porsches come with Mobil 1 from the factory and have for the past 25 years. For cars that have OPF use Mobil 1 ESP 0w-40, for those that don't use the Mobil 1 FS 0w-40. What are the drawbacks? If you use a full SAPS oil on a car with OPFs it would lead to the filter getting clogged, leading to a check engine light and a new OPF which could cost 1000+ to fix. If your car doesn't have OPFs it doesn't matter which oil you use. So if you're in the states throw any 0w-40 you can find, I recommend synthetics as they last longer. Key word SYNTHETIC, not SYTHENTIC TECHNOLOGY, SEMISYNTHETIC etc. If you're not sure - and this is overkill - ask the dealer if they have a tariff code for the product. If it starts with 3404 it's synthetic. If it starts with 2407, it might say whatever marketing convoluted statement, but the base oils used are mineral and they compensate with additives, which run out faster and lead to higher oil consumption.

There are OPF filters on our GT4's in America, they're just not monitored. Ask any of the exhaust manufacturers like Fabspeed.

I read a great tip on the forums to lessen the mess of removing the filter - put a large sandwich bag around it to catch all the spillage.

Wow I just got an OG specific commercial it’s about damn time KZbin gets their crap right , Porsche is not messing around with the sub frame connectors anymore looks super legit ! I wish I could pre-fill my oil filter on my flat six on the Subaru, my filters horizontal on the side of the block I still try and pre-fill in a little bit though, Think that’s a good idea that you pre fill the filter especially in your case of straight up that’s nice!

A40 oils cover 1984 and newer sports car models, but with the newest vehicles, the C40, C30, and C20 standards have been introduced. Most notably, these new "C" specification oils provide protection against LSPI, or low speed pre-ignition, and protect emissions control devices. The C30 and C20 standards are provided for shared VAG platform engines that call for 30 and 20-weight oils, with thinner oils used primarily for improved fuel economy.

The new VW 511 00 oil spec is the same as Porsche C40. Maybe this gives some oil options in the US. Great Video, Thank you for your efforts!

Bob Is the Oil Guy forum is your place to get all knowledge oil. C40 is a Mid-Saps oil, vs full saps on A40. Deals with the add pack that is in the oil - C40 would have less of the friction modifiers to help keep the cats from getting clogged. Technically full saps are better for high-performance motors but they will put out more stuff that could potentially clog the cat. VW for the new turbos have gone to this to help with fuel economy also, but many are using the older spec to keep the engine protected.

Hey mate, absolutely fill the oil filter whenever possible The oil can’t circulate until the filter is full. The other thing that has helped me in the past especially on a new or unfamiliar car tape the bolts/screws to the panel next to the hole. You’ll know what screw/bolt goes where and you won’t miss a hole. That is one of my all-time pet peeves different size bolts and you can’t tell by looking which ones go where very frustrating anyways thanks for the video car looks awesome👍

I have never prefilled an oil filter in 20 years, and I still get great used oil analysis reports. My Integra GSR has 374,000 miles original engine, of which nearly 300,000 miles have been my ownership and oil changes. On some cars the filter orientation makes it very difficult if not impossible to prefill the filter.

Hi Mat, you may want to wear thin medical gloves to protect your skin especially from the used oil which is not good for your health. Gloves are also easier wiped off.

Yeah, I finally got some nitrile gloves that fit and are thick enough not to rip. I now wear them every time I touch the car, even washing. My hands are much happier. Only issue is in the summer, man, do they collect a lot of sweat!

Although it’s really not a huge deal if you’re not a pro mechanic working on cars 40+ hours per week every week. Some oil or grease on your hands when you’re a weekend warrior or DIY won’t really hurt anything.

Hey Matt, good video, and as stated by another subscriber, the rear middle part of the front panel with the 2 metal clips is tucked above those 2 ears of the subframe(near where the oil filter and pan are, that part you pressed up on after installing the diffuser piece) not below it as you have it in the video, otherwise great video as always ✌

I've had good experiences with Motul 0-40W x-max in my 987.1 Cayman CS - using mobil 1 0-40W, my engine developed a grinding rattle on first cold start which we suspected to be the chain tensioners. I lived with it for across 2 oil changes then switched to motul and the noise went away :D Also feels like slick longer. I loved 300v - I felt the extra slickness in the engine revs but it's a race oil that doesnt have a lot of detergents so had to change out about 3000kms!

Not an expert but as far as i can tell the Porsche C40 classification (or any brand classification for that matter) is just a measure of how much anti oxidant additive the oil contains in order to survive the entire service interval. Since the oil is labled as "x-clean" i would also imagine it contains alot of detergent additive. VI-improvers would also be a factor since it's a performance engine that experiences large temperature variations.

i'd advise against using oil with drastically different cold vs. hot weight values. the compounds added to allow for that are not conducive to motor health, especially in a performance car. I'm sure you could use 10w40 since you're in florida. with 5w40, chances are the ambient temperature will never even dip below the temperature threshold for the oil weight to be at 5, since it's never cold in florida.

This engine specifies 0w40 and 5w 40 only, and the latest Porsche C40 spec. There are no oil brands that are C40 spec in 10w

Great video Matt. It'll help me a lot when I embark on my first 718 Spyder oil change soon. Two questions: Is your GT4 a PDK or Manual trans? I heard access is harder with PDK. Also, was 7.25 quarts the right amount to add, or did you add more later?

I can't imagine many other GT4 owners will be changing their own oil hah. Apparently Porsche thinks the same, since they don't advise how much oil to put in.

Just to let you know, I found that you get more out by having the front a bit higher than the rear. With the front a little higher you get some of the oil in the lines that run to the coolers. When I changed mine I got about 9 1/4 quarts out by having the front higher than the rear.

why dont you check with your dealer Matt and see if you delete the GPF can you go with A40???? Since Us spec models do not have any monitoring of the GPF.

How did you install the oil filter after you put oil in to the filter? Wouldnt the oil drip when you try to install, that's if the part where you connect is at an angle rather than straight, I'm not sure BTW shouldn't you have lubricanted the oil seal before installing the new one?

I did lubricate the oil ring. The filter housing goes in upright, so it didn't spill.

Lol, even if you count both lift costs together, AND the tools, the amount of work that has been done on them would far exceed that cost if you were using a standard shop labor cost. The 1M, Corvette, M5, E92, RS, and GT4 have all had significant work up there. Not to mention OG crew cars like Kyle, Bryce, etc. Literally thousands of hours of labor.

Well I thought Porsche runs only with Mobil1 from the factory not with Motul Made in France, I know they won races but German precision car needs German quality oil !

Motul/Amsoil is better than Mobil 1. What oil a manufacturer uses is simply the flavor of the month and mostly a business decision rather than performance. Look at BMW. They’ve gone through 3 different recommended oil brands in the last 5 years. Lol

Hi matt/folks. A few points with my opinions/experience as applicable, keen to see others thoughts: 1) I understand (no experience) the Porsche C40 oil is adapted to ensure a gas particular filter is not damaged by small amounts of engine oil making it into exhaust. This is the 'SAPS' that can reduce the efficiency of the GPF over time. Interesting read here: 360.lubrizol.com/2020/The-Right-Engine-Oil-for-GPF-equipped-Vehicles 2) I prefer not to put oil into the oil filter housing. You are essentially allowing unfiltered oil past the filter. Its there to protect the engine as you know. I know its all a gamble, about small invisible particles and a manifestation of multiple contaminants damaging bearings little by little but its best practice. I know you would see if a heap of visible particles was in the oil you would not proceed but the relevant ISO scale (4406) is all about what we cannot see. In your black stone oil results you may have seen oil cleanliness as an ISO 4406 form, e.g. 18/16/13 is a good standard. It may have been a 'NAS 1638 'number. I have learned that the oil we get in shops is pretty good in these terms but not to the OEM standards at first and not well QC'd at plant. That goes for water content too out of interest. 3) a 0w40 and a 5w40 will have a different viscosity at whatever your cold/start temps are even in a hot country. It wont be an issue at all but the 0w40 will not just come into its own for cold places only. This would be seen from the viscosity indexes which are just straight line plots of the V40 (0 or 5W) and the V100 figures (40w) i,e temp vs viscosity.

Looks like a pretty informative video, but I wouldn't know. Unfortunately I had to close out this video due to the unbearable mouth breathing your mic picked up louder than your voice.
