But why do we take a linear combination for 1st order correction? How does that come up mathematically? Doesn't that tell me that the 1st order correction is also a state of the unperturbed Hamiltonian, then how does that help?

Good explanation. In the case of a quantum harmonic oscillator if you have a perturbation term equal to x^4 you get a function of n for the first order energy correction. Namely the higher the n the higher the first order correction. How can we explain that? Does it make sense from a physical point of view?
