First passenger train in 3 years, Newport, RI - Newport & Narragansett Bay Railroad - 5/5/2024

For the first time since 2021 a passenger train operated south of Piers into Newport, RI on the Newport Secondary Rail Line. While work and inspection trains have run over this track since then this was the first passenger train this far south. The lack of passenger trains is due to the track to Newport Station being under construction so trains have been operating out of Melville instead. This video follows the passenger extra deadheading to Admiral Kalbfus Rd. in Newport then heading back north to Portsmouth, RI. The rest of the charter over the north end of the line will be in a future video. Hopefully the track all the way to Newport Station will be finished this year then we'll see trains here regularly once again.

That’s a slow moving run. What’s the ultimate track speed gonna be? Also will the crossing signals be active for the final project? Some aren’t working in that video.

The Old Colony & Newport Railway advocates for shuttle passenger service on the line but that won’t happen immediately. The return of passenger trains this year will be in the form of excursions.
