Mark, as a game designer myself I can tell you that a lot of Indie platformers use a Raycast system, that is a method of collision detection which checks directly below the center of the player object. As a result, you can be standing with thew edge of you collision on a pillar or platform but jumping won't work right because there's nothing directly below the center of the player. That's likely why you fell a lot in the pillar levels.

Forest Fire Basically the game draws a line below the center of the player. If that line hits something, then it tells the game that you are standing on ground, therefore you can jump. If your standing on the edge of a platform so that there's nothing below your center then the game thinks there's no ground and that you can't jump.
