FIRST Prosthesis | Arm prosthesis for small children with various interchangeable attachments
2.5-year-old Hailey has dysmelia in her left arm, which means she is missing her palm and fingers. Hailey has already tried out several arm prostheses and is now enthusiastic about the FIRST prosthesis.
The FIRST prosthesis convinces with its easy handling with its silicone shaft and with its many possibilities that the different exchangeable modules allow.
The prosthesis is even so easy to put on that Hailey can use it independently without help whenever she wants.
Why a prosthesis in infancy?
It is important for the child's development and health to be able to explore and understand the world as independently as possible from the very beginning. This and the following reasons speak in favour of an arm prosthesis fitting from infancy onwards:
- Performing activities with both hands promotes healthy motor and mental development.
- Early prosthetic fitting can have a positive effect on strength, mobility and body symmetry:
- the prosthesis compensates for the length of the affected side
- The prosthetic hand contributes to a balanced body image and can be better integrated into the child's body scheme.
- hand-hand, hand-eye and hand-mouth coordination is promoted
- Some compensatory movements can be reduced
- Through early fitting, the child is playfully accustomed to wearing and functioning with a prosthetic arm.
- The child's motor skills are trained through playful handling of the prosthesis.
- The aim of the prosthesis fitting is to counteract possible overloading, which can be caused by excessive strain on the opposite side.
- The FIRST prosthesis is intended to prepare the way for a permanent prosthesis fitting.

Get her used to a hook early. I knew a girl who was fitted with her first prosthetic hook when she was almost 2 years old, it was amazing what she could do with her hook.

With the many different attachments of the First prosthesis, small children can try out many different functions of the prosthesis at an early age. Shovel, roller, gripper, cutlery, sieve are just a few of the attachments and offer the child many more possibilities than just a hook.

@@pohliggmbh The interchangeability part is cool, but Ive seen few adults with interchangeable mechanical terminal devices. One though did have a device adapted for woodworking and carpentry. A childhood friends uncle restored a vehicle in the 1970s using his hook..
