What is an orthoprosthesis? | Aid for walking in the case of congenital malformation
Juna was born with a congenital malformation (fibula aplasia). She learned to walk on her orthoprostheses. Together with orthopaedic technician Serafin, she explains to us how orthoprostheses help to compensate for the length deficit of the leg. You'll also learn about the conditions for which orthoprostheses are used and how they differ from prostheses.
What is an orthoprosthesis?
An orthoprosthesis is a device that has both orthotic and prosthetic design features. It compensates for the length deficit on the malformed leg (prosthetic component) and, if necessary, provides corrective support (orthotic component).
Orthoprostheses have a prosthetic foot and, if necessary, a prosthetic knee joint. The main difference between prostheses and orthoprostheses is that the orthoprosthesis does not incorporate a residual limb, but a limb. This limb can be severely depleted in terms of length and volume. In addition, functional units, such as knee joints or ankle joints, are often not regularly positioned. However, toe, foot, lower leg and/or thigh sections are almost always present on the malformed limb.
