Finally America gets nice, modern trains. But as old and tired American trains used to look, their seating comfort was superb. Unfortunately this is one part American trains have also adapted from European trains, uncomfortable seats.

Congratulations CALTrain Riders! Welcome to electric commuter club! Some space for inprovement - Surprising that seat tables are not installed. They are very handy, when you could use your laptop during the trip. Hopefully seat tables and usb/power plugs will be installed later.

Would the trip be long enough you would have time to pull out the laptop? Or even have something to eat at a seat table? Nice touch though.

I suppose that trip from San Jose to San Francisco could be 1.5 - 2 hour long. Long enough for the movie or for quick snack. However it is also an issue of the procedures and scope of the cleaning services work. Adding tables - could result in extra work for cleaners.

17:38: when you pull it, the handle either extends slightly outwards (downwards) and stays there (most likely in this case) or it pulls back up and rotates an indicator on the unit itself so a conductor can also visually see it has been pulled. This one most likely pulls outwards and stays there as it still has a key to reset it: by pulling the handle, it is latched into position and only by insertion of the key on the topleft of the unit, it can be retracted again. These days most are probably indicator-less as it will probably show a notification at the driver exactly pinpointing which handle has been pulled. I don't know about your regulations, but in The Netherlands (and most likely elsewhere in Europe) it hardly ever directly controls the emergency brake anymore, but first establishes a warning at the driver, who can than decide to overrule it (or not): if the train is in a tunnel, the emergency brake should not come into effect, that's why. A direct verbal connection by microphone with the driver can also be established upon a pull, so it can be discussed whether an emergency brake is necessary right away or the next station (where a train could not be calling) should be the best option to come to a normal stop (as an emergency brake can have quite the consequences on board (magnetbrakes will deploy))

Theoretically once they elevate the platforms when CA High-Speed-Rail starts using the corridor that's where the ADA accessible seats will be (that's why there's that weird mid-level door)

I believe the tickets were from the RSVP, in any case we got there early and entered a line to see the trains. Once we got to the front of the line they took us in groups to the trains.

It doesn't help there are two sets of doors, one for grade-entry and one for raised platforms, significantly reducing the space inside. I think there's also a regulation stating a minimum weight of a traincar/set in the USA, significantly changing a design.

Haha noted - I think it's debatable if I dirtied the seat. The tops of my shoes are clean, but I would definitely like these trains to stay clean for the long run.

10:19 these in European Stadler Flirts are holo above and are space for your luggage, i don't know why in American version this is solid.

I've been told they will continue running diesel fleets from Gilroy to SF & vice versa even when the EMUs are rolled out. Sounds like you'll still have a chance! This is due to Tamien to Gilroy being not electrified.

They're not going into service until fall 2024. Electrical work continues on the catenary system, and testing has just begun on completed sextions

Well... 7:54 surprises me... I seriously expected the door to be electric like is standard by now in Dutch trains (and probably throughout Europe). How is a disabled person supposed to do that easily? Try doing that in a wheelchair. By the way... try to be a little less 'oh my good look at everything' because all the panning and tilting is dazzling to say the least.

That's standard for commuter trains. Not sure about Caltrain since I'm on the other side of the country but generally speaking commuter trains have one or two toilets for the entire train.

caltrain has one toilet in each car so technically caltrain has 4-6 toilets
