I generally don't like growling, but Opeth is one of those I learned to appreciate. My advice is to stop looking for vocals as means of lyrics delivery, that growling spoils. Think of it as singer doing a distortion on the sound of his voice to convey a mood, similar to distortion on other instruments like a guitar, think of it being an instrument, rather than means of communication. That change of mindset opened it up for me. Besides that, Opeth has no growling on latest 4 of their albums, so if you want to ease into it, start from the newer stuff, and progress to old, once you can appreciate it. They are really an amazing band and Mikaels growling style is one of the few I enjoy..

That's exactly how I came to appreciate growling - thinking it was an effect like a distorted guitar.

That's actually pretty smart. I kinda just brute forced myself to liking growls by going through stuff like Gojira and Mastodon and then eventually into stuff like Slipknot, Jinjer, Opeth, Lamb of God, etc.

I don't think I could like this even if I was still young.. the comment section I'm reading alot of "look at growling as a type of instrument other than vocals".. if you have to force yourself to like it.. is not any good guys.

100% you gotta think of the vocals as another instrument and if you feel compelled to delve deeper into the lyrical content you can. Prior to that though you should try and focus on the notes and energy it envokes not just the words you cant make out!

Lyrics: Ghost of mother Lingering death Ghost on mother's bed Black strands on the pillow Contour of her health Twisted face upon the head Ghost of perdition Stuck in her chest A warning no one read Tragic friendship Called inside the fog Pouring venom brew deceiving Devil cracked the earthly shell, foretold she was the one Blew hope into the room and said, "You have to live before you die young" Devil cracked the earthly shell, foretold she was the one Blew hope into the room and said, "You have to live before you die young" Holding her down Channeling darkness Hemlock for the Gods Fading resistance Draining the weakness Penetrating inner light Road into the dark unaware Winding ever higher Darkness by her side Spoke and passed her by Dedicated hunter Waits to pull us under Rose up to its call In his arms she'd fall Mother light received Her faithful servant's fee In time the hissing of her sanity Faded out her voice and soiled her name And like marked pages in a diary Everything seemed clean that is unstained The incoherent talk of ordinary days Why would we really need to live? Decide what's clear and what's within a haze What you should take and what to give Ghost of perdition A saint's premonition's unclear Keeper of holy hordes Keeper of holy whores To see a beloved son In despair of what's to come If one cut the source of the flow And everything would change Would conviction fall In the shadow of the righteous? The phantasm of your mind Might be calling you to go Defying the forgotten morals Where the victim is the prey

Opeth is known for drawing a scene or a picture with the first couple of words, that's why the entrance was growling to make you shape the picture in your head of how grosome the scene is. that's why it's perfect when you understand the lyrics

It was exactly the same for me when a friend of mine was in my car and said: listen to this band, I think you'll like it (My fav bands are Tool, Rammstein, Nightwish, but quite different things also in metal and rock). This was exactly this song my first experience, and the more the song was playing, the more I was like "wooaw!!!" I had to stop the car and say to my friend: ok, we stop, I want to listen to it without taking a risk because they brought me somewhere else. Great souvenir for me this first time. The talent is just incredible. I like a lot of songs that Opeth fans don't like (for example Era is my second favorite), I'm not so much into their jazzy songs and when it's too much death, I'm really when it's more prog metal. Great great band.

This is the song that I made myself learn to like growling for. I must have listened to it over a hundred times that first week that I "discovered" the band. Before Opeth, I used to laugh at growling vocals, they always felt like a joke to me. This song was so intricate and epic that I made myself take it seriously and learn to not only appreciate the growling, but almost love it. Opeth is a very skilled band and Mikael is an amazing writer. He doesn't growl much any more (at all?) but their music still has that 70s prog sound that you might enjoy

They were a progressive death metal band that have now morphed into a straight up prog rock band (album wise anyway..live they still mix it up) Long progressive songs always take a few listens to fully "get" but that's what makes it all the more interesting to me. Opeth became my favorite band after taking quite a while to get into. Absolutely awesome musicianship and songwriting..the kings of transitions! Also, they were the first band that made me enjoy growls. To date Opeth and Jinjer are the only bands that i really enjoy the growling...they both use it when appropriate to add something to the songs. Non stop growls all the way through a song still does nothing for me.

This was an amazing show. Red Rocks is outside Denver at the foot of the mountains and is widely known as one of the best venues in the world. Heilung, who you just reacted to recently, is playing there in October, and Wardruna played there right before the pandemic started. It was actually the last show I saw. Check out more Opeth for sure! A Fair Judgement live would be a good one with no growls.

On both the audio and lighting systems they generally run they have boards hooked to laptops which they pre program audio settings for the board to button queues, it’s literally a matter of pressing a button to queue the settings for the next part! This is also how they deal with long improv parts in the song with no set length. That being said the reason for huge transitions in metal like this is that they are mimicking classical music which has movements within a piece and tell a story, this is why their songs are often longer than songs of other genres!

In general, bands like Opeth don't get air play on most radio stations, anyway. Radio stations don't like playing long songs and they just want quick, catchy stuff that will hook ppl into listening to their station. The internet has opened up a whole new world for discovering new bands, at least a lot faster. I never used to like hearing the growls in songs either, even though I own a heap of Opeth albums and Slipknot and Trivium haha. It was Jinjer that actually broke me into appreciating the use of growling. I still wouldn't enjoy a song of constantly growling all the way through, I don't think, but the voice is an instrument in a band as well as delivering the lyrics and there are times that using the voice in a different way really works.

Hey Tom, listen to me - I hated the growling vocals before Opeth - and it took me awhile to get into Opeth. I tried for a couple of years, but the growling was hard to get into. Now I love it - and in time you will too - but, if you need to ease into those kind of vocals the same way I had to, here are some song recommendations from Opeth that either don't have any, or have a balance that leans more towards clean. Windowpane - Amazing solos. No growls. Harvest - I appreciate this the most as part of a three song package with Bleak in front of it and The Drapery Falls after, but it's great on it's own. Very mellow - no growls. Face of Melinda - That middle part! No growls. Isolation Years - About as close to pop as Opeth will get. No growls. And then, slowly work these into your listening... Harlequin Forest - Some growling, but the majority is clean. That middle part! The Drapery Falls - Same as above. After awhile, the growls will become appropriate and you will sense that they are needed in the songs that have them. Once you get to that point... Listen to Bleak, Harvest, and The Drapery Falls in that order. It might be the best three song run on an album that i've heard. After that, the door is wide open. Masters Apprentices, Blackwater Park (The whole album), Still Life (The whole album, but The Moor is really awesome!), and Deliverance are great next steps.

Just like a painter uses lighter and darker shades to accentuate different emotions, so does a good composer use lighter and darker shades of tones to accomplish the same effect. Harsh sounding vocals are often used when "painting" a harsh picture and therefore should be celebrated and respected just as much as clean vocals. Music should not be listened to as parts of a whole, but rather as a whole. You should really give one of their older songs, "Black Rose Immortal", a listen.

they started as death metal, but then started experimenting and became progressive death metal, and now they are just progressive metal leaning towards just progressive... but they always change, while holding on to that kind of witchy melancholy sound
