Released 1 year after the last survivor of the Bismarck died - he was 19 when the ship was sunk. The fishing boat skipper is his son and inherited the compass... Not all of the Kreigsmarine were party members. Battle of the Atlantic. You have 8 albums of history to go [Metallizer is pre-history theme]. They are recording their 10th album ATT.

I remember reading a book awhile back. It was about a German pilot in WWII fighting in Africa. He, like at least 2/3rds of the Germans, weren't Nazi's. And after the war was lost for them, he was condemned for being a pilot by his fellow Germans, because they held a lot of the blame for the war being lost in their country in the immediate aftermath. In our age, its easy to cast blame. Back then...information was a lot harder to come by.

You're right about the fact that Sabaton's whole concept is military history. They simply tell the story of what happened, but they don't take sides. That's why they get away with singing about German "Ghost division" (WW2) in Poland and "Primo Victoria" (about D-Day) in Germany. Sabaton is huge in Germany and Eastern Europe. I really recommend you to check out those songs I mentioned above. Also check out "No bullets fly" (animated story video). It kind of "twists your mind... " 😉🤘

The senior officer in the video Is Paul Ascher (born December 18, 1899, died May 27, 1941) was a German naval officer during World War II. He was an artillery officer on the battleship Admiral Graf Spee during the ship's voyage in the South Atlantic. He was arrested in Argentina in December 1939 after the ship was destroyed, but managed to escape back to Germany. He was then the captain of the battleship Bismarck frigate when she was sunk. Before the war, he was classified as Mischling, as he was of Jewish descent.

Sabaton has songs about everyone. Ghost Division. WW2 German tanks in France. Ghost in the Trenches. (my fave) Native Canadian in WWI that (as far as I know) Still has the highest kill count for snipers. Lost Battalion. WWI Amarican battalion is cut off and surrounded and survived until rescue. Attack of the Deadmen. (Makes me cry) WWI Russians. Winged Hussars (Massive Meme among the fanbase) A key part in understanding World War 2 Germany is to separate the Nazi ruling party, and the German people. It is said that the conditions forced upon Germany at the end of the Great War, guaranteed World War 2. It's pretty heartbreaking actually. WW2 is the story of how the German people learned the hard way that if someone promises you something too good to be true, it really really is.

The pocket watch was given to the sailor by Admiral Lujens, he had engraved the ships cordornates into the top of the case. The sailor swam away from the wreck and was rescued by the Royal Navy. The Bismarck was the largest Battleship to sail the Atlantic, she was struck in the rudder from a torpedo fired from a swordfish (the small by planes) in her attempt to get to the French coast were she would have been protected the the German air force. The 18 inch guns she had were some of the largest main batteries ever placed on a ship making her a absolute lion in the ocean when she brought her gun to bear against the HMS Hood. It took a combination of I believe 4 English battleships to be her down.

9:47 you talk about "young impressionable soldiers" but, you need to remember, this was a tough time with completely different ideologies, and they were born into a country crushed by war. Their country was in the gutter after ww1. They had been told for the past decade that they had been humiliated by the treaty of Versailles and they had no competing voices for many of the claims. Some of them really bought into the ideology and were nazis. Many of them joined the military out of necessity and many because they had no choice. Check out Sabaton's "Rise of evil" and the related history video for a much more nuanced explanation and discussion.

@JustJen: Fun fact: When HMS _Rodney_ started firing at _Bismarck,_ she unloaded over 4500 shells in approximately 3 hours. _Rodney_ ended up having to be stopped from shelling _Bismarck,_ because she was already sinking, notwithstanding the fact that _Bismarck_ had already sunk HMS _Hood,_ for which _Rodney_ wanted vengeance. And Jen, I _HIGHLY_ recommend the song Night Witches, by Sabaton -- it's about an all-female Russian bombing regiment on the Eastern Front.

They designed 260mm cannons. Which is around 11 inches. The diameter of the grenades from the guns. Eventually there was 380mm gun in Bismarck. That will penetrate evey ship ever made. And it will explode the ammunition-warehouse that they have in the opposing ship. There is tons of TNT loaded into every ship, because they have to carry their own ammunition. If another ship hits that, the whole ship is going to explode.

Exactly there was no mass free media or internet so people could research their feurer. It was a fascist tyranny lead by a very charismatic man in a time when the German people were beaten down and all in debt up to their eyeballs to ,what seemed to them to be, a League of Nations ganging up on them. Then along comes a man (a war hero btw) who is telling them that they should stand tall, with pride for being who they are, and that it’s not their fault that they’re in this situation it’s the world ganging up on them. But there is still hope that they can fight back and stand their ground against oppression and not just that but that they could and should win. Then he started to follow through on his promises and winning and the “bully nations” seemed scared of him. That’s the only side that the German propaganda machine showed the German populous so of course they followed his orders his ideals were rarely revealed to the masses and only when it looked like he’d definitely win. Keep in mind that the SS were originally seen and marketed as basically an elite police force and a last line of defense against invading forces so seeing them marching around gathering “criminals” seemed perfectly reasonable and even to be applauded. But yeah it was a weird time to say the least lol

How could young men knowingly join Hitler's military? Well, for some, there wasn't a choice. It's called "conscription". Others wanted adventure. Others wanted a way to move up in the world and thought that being in the military was the path to go. Others truly believed in Hitler's message and vision. Just like how anyone can knowingly join the U.S. military. Or any military for that matter.

They were not all Nazis. On Bismarck served 2065 men and only 110 could be saved from the cold waters of the Noth Atlantic. Most of the young soldiers were just normal people who served their country when called, like any other soldier in the world would have. If your country calls for soldiers to defend its cause you follow that call or be marked as a traitor and possibly be executed for treason especially in a regime like in Germany of 1933 to 1945. Many soldiers in the Luftwaffe (German Airforce) or Kriegsmarine (German Navy) disliked Hitler and his propaganda and i am sure many soldiers in the Wehrmacht (German Army) did too. Even many officers of the regular troops stood opposed to Hitler, but he was in command and they were to much a soldier not to follow these commands. How many americans would follow the orders of an american president, no matter what? It is your president calling for the good of your country so many would obey, right? And take in consideration, that the atrocities that the Hitler-regime did to the Jews, Sinti and Roma and other people in concentration camps were not really known to the normal soldier at that time. The "Waffen-SS"-soldiers were someting different. These guys were the soldiers of the Nazi-party and maby knew what was happening in Europe and they followed Hitler out of belief. So don't call every German who fought in WW2 a Nazi. It is like calling every American a Cowboy. Generalization is never a good thing when it comes to people. Sabaton knows this, because they never take sides in their songs. They only tell history as it happened and sing about legendary and heroic military events. Like "40-1" about these 720 polish soldiers who resisted 40.000 german soldiers for 3 days, or the "Winged Hussars" when Polish cavalry broke the Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683 or "Seven pillars of Wisdom" about Lamrence of Arabia in WWI, or "Night Witches - animated story video" about an all female bomber regiment of the Russians or "No bullets fly - animated story video" About a German pilot who rembered the words of his commander "If I ever see or hear of you shooting at a man in a parachute, I will shoot you myself." when he saw a badly damaged american bomber. Later he said: "To me, it was just like they were in a parachute. I saw them and I couldn't shoot them down." Just check "Franz Stigler" on Wikipedia. In a war human beings fight over territories, beliefs, religions or ideologies but they are still human beings and not mindless monsters or robots. There are always these things called humanity, honor and respect.

Hi, Jen From a fellow history buff, this MV was a co-op between Sabaton and World Of Warships (a mobile game). Sabaton is all about history, every song is a history lesson. Every song describes a major battle/event/individual in a war ranging from the 18th century to WW2. A few "small" facts should also be taken into account in the history of Bismarck. - the crew was not fully trained and with little to no real combat experience - A relatively large part of the smaller caliber of the air defense was not fully operational - and then the lucky hit of a single torpedo on the steering gear, which condemned the ship to only be able to go in circles. There were other torpedo hits in the Bismarck's armored ring - but the ship didn’t mind at all. Had that not been the case - full operational readiness of all weapon systems, trained crew, full maneuverability of the ship - then the pursuing English ships would have had no chance at all. The 380mm guns could fire two different types of shells. The heavy shells weighed 800 kilograms and could hit targets 42 kilometers away. The lighter grenades weighed around 495 kilograms and could hit at a distance of 55 kilometers. The 15-inch guns used by the British had a maximum range of just over 27 kilometers. This meant that the pursuit ships could be shot at by the Bismarck 10-15 kilometers before their own firing range. Ship-based torpedoes also had no chance at these distances. That's why there was this torpedo attack with the old, slow aircraft, one of which landed the lucky hit on the steering gear. Apart from that - Sabaton not only makes great music - I am always fascinated by the examination of historical war events and the visual implementation - that is, cinematic - also great.

Have you heard of: Hitler Youth The Hitler Youth (German: Hitlerjugend), often abbreviated as HJ, was the youth organisation of the Nazi Party in Germany. Its origins date back to 1922 and it received the name Hitler-Jugend, Bund deutscher Arbeiterjugend ("Hitler Youth, League of German Worker Youth") in July 1926. From 1936 until 1945, it was the sole official boys' youth organisation in Germany and it was partially a paramilitary organisation; it was composed of the Hitler Youth proper for male youths aged 14 to 18, and the German Youngsters in the Hitler Youth (Deutsches Jungvolk in der Hitler Jugend or "DJ", also "DJV") for younger boys aged 10 to 14. Also at the point of scuttling, the Bismarck was a complete mission kill. Main guns were knocked out, secondaries were knocked out and she was effectively adrift. Many ships once they reached this state were scuttled to prevent the wreck from being captured by the enemy.

First I'm German so I think I can allow myself to talk about the problem at the time wasn't that all Nazis were this war based on several factors but the 2 or 3 main reasons were that all young people were indoctrinated and if they weren't Vernatic Nazis were compulsory for military service. Apart from that Germany was humiliated after the Great War and that was also taught to the students afterwards, accordingly, they wanted to win this war and especially from 44 as an example, the Wehrmacht was only about not admitting the enemy into the Reich

As a (kinda) young German whose great-grandpas fought in Russia and in Italy for the Nazis I can only say that I wouldn't be here if they hadn't. One fought in the Waffen-SS and the other in the regular German Wehrmacht. Both were given the same ultimatum. Either fight for the Nazis or see your whole family wiped out. No matter how much of a "pure-blood" you are. Of course there's no excuse for what they did during that time but they did what they had to to keep their loved ones alive within their own country, for which they had to go through hell. I guess that's enough to show how f*cked up that time was, even for German barely-adults like my g-granddads were. Love the song and nice reaction. Especially fond of your interest in history. Keep it up!

I get where you are comming from, calling the men with the compass a nazi, but I might not have been so. While the Bismarck was staffed with Volunteers, many of them fought not for Hitler, but for Germany. They belived in the country, not the leader. Many high ranking officers in the Kriegsmarine were former Sailors of the Imperial Navy. They may followed the ideals that Hitler had, but many just fought to save germany from another treaty of versailles.

In hindsight it seems weird that people followed the nazis but if you look in to the whole context of it with the (for germany) harch peace treaty after WW1, the fear of a communist revolution etc it starts to make at least some sense. Not saying Hitler was right or anything but there is a logic to it. Anyway, great that you´re looking in to Sabaton, they are an awesome band with lots of great songs. A must for everyone who likes both metal and history. Some suggestions: Primo victoria, The lion from the north, A lifetime of war, Ghost division, The winged hussars, Carolus rex to name just a few.

9:53. Wrong, they were Wehrmacht soldiers, not Nazi soldiers. They fought for what they believe has to be defended (Germany). It's nothing different from when America goes to war and tells you (a simple civilian back home) that the actions they are taking, 10.000 km away from America, are justified. Soldiers don't care about who is at the top, they care for the land they are (or think they are) defending. Though, all that aside, I strongly believe that there should never ever be a war between brothers every again.
