Me too, it's a complicated and difficult time for his partner and all those who care for them both. This is something often forgotten with the covid pandemic - there's far more outcomes than simply dead vs recovered. There are so very many people with various amounts of long term health issues post virus. Research indicates varying degrees of fatigue, cognitive issues, diabetes, and heart issues are happening for many, many people. He's not my only friend dealing with 'long Covid' but he is the most severely affected of those who have survived the initial viral illness.

First off, condolences for your loss, and I hope your friend recovers from their health ordeal. You were wondering about the blurry figures in the background, and I may be wrong, but I thiiiink it's a reference to the movie "Donnie Darko". The original version of "Mad World" by Tears for Fears is actually pretty upbeat, but then in 2001 a much more subdued version was recorded for the soundtrack of that movie by Gary Jules and Michael Andrews. It would be VERY difficult to explain what that movie is about since it's... really weird. But suffice to say, the whole thing with figures moving strangely is a prominent part of it. And the rendition of the song that Pentatonix gave us is definitely based on that version more than the original. Anyway, I really enjoyed your reaction. I definitely think the group was making a statement when they released this song when they did, what with everything that was going on at the time. They also did a phenomenal job with it, especially considering they weren't able to be with each other when singing it, yet they still had some of the tightest harmonies I think I've heard from them. Take care and again, I hope things get better for you and yours.

Thank you so much for your kind words. It means a lot. I had no idea what the blurry figures were about and I really appreciate you filling me in! How fascinating!!! Sorry to hear about your loss. Hope things turn around for you and your friends soon! I'd definitely stay away from Say Something until they do! There are a few songs where Kevin doesn't beatbox, but joins in the singing - Run To You, My Heart With You (the inspiration for Run To You), Can't Help Falling In Love - maybe a couple of others I don't remember at the moment. I would second the recommendations for Come Along - it's one that's hard to stay still to! Others of their "lighter" favorites include My Favorite Things, Sing, 90s Dance Medley, or even Perfume medley or Midnight In Tokyo if you need some Pentatonix J-pop in your life!

I am so sorry for your sadness lately. Grandmothers hold a special place in our hearts for sure, and Covid has caused more than its share of heartbreak. My 94-year-old Dad weathered a very mild case recently, thank God he has come out of it well. I saw someone had already recommended Come Along for when you need a dose of whimsy and I second that. Sing is an exuberant original from early on in their career, and their 90s Dance Medley will have you doing the chair boogie. Sometimes commiserating is the way to go, other times we need an antidote for troubled times. Thankfully, music is good for both. Hope things improve for you, take care of yourself. I'm sorry for the loss of your Grandmother. I hope your friends will recover fully. And you are a great friend, just doing simple things like getting groceries, taking care of the cats, etc. That kind of thing is so simple, but is so very helpful. It just takes all the "little" stresses off so that your friends can deal with the big stresses. Now to the music! I love PTX and a capella music. If you haven't already checked out these songs by PTX, you may wish to check them out. "Sing" (an original)--Avi is still with the group for this one. "Amazing Grace" and "The Prayer" are just out of this world. Their cover of "The Prayer", in my opinion, beats the cover from Celine Dion and Andre Bocelli (and that is saying something). They have some really great Christmas stuff too--"Mary Did You Know", "Carol of the Bells", and "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" (yes, from "The Nutcracker"). I also love their performance at the American Music Awards of the "Star Wars" theme.

I have 2 originals (well more, but just mentioning these for now cause my list of faves is so long 😂) I love & recommend. If you think about the lyrics they are kind of in the same category even though the styles are very different! 1. Sing is upbeat all the way, & the concept is kind of "Keep on reaching out to others. Whatever your mood is, stay connected to others by sharing your song." 2. Happy Now starts slower & then picks up the pace, & is about coming out of a depression after losing someone (whether a romantic relationship that split up or someone you care for dying), learning to find joy in the good things in life again despite the loss/sadness.

Me again. My last two of the "fab five" a capella groups include Peter Hollens (the king of layering). My all time favorite of his is "Shenandoah" (from the movie of the same name). I also recommend his "Les Miserables" medley (with his wife), "Mist Mountains" (with Tim Foust, from Home Free; from the movie "The Hobbit") and the "Drinking Medley" (with Hank Greene--from several of "The Hobbit Movies"). If the "Drinking Medley" doesn't get your toes tapping and head bobbing, nothing will! He also has a great "Disney Sidekick" and "Disney Villains" medleys out. The last of my fab five is Voctave--totally different from all the others (with 11 members). Voctave has one of the best coloratura sopranos I've ever heard (Kate Lott). Try their Great Movie Medley (a tribute to John Williams), "Someone Like You" (with Jodie McBrayer, from "Jeckyll and Hyde"), "Remember Me" (with Marachi Cobra, from the movie "Cocoa"), and my all-time favorite from them the Disney Princess Medley. They also did a cover of "Where Are You Christmas" this past year that makes me tear up (in a good way) every time I watch it.

Thank you for your heartfelt reaction. I love this song. The first I heard it was Adam Lambert singing it on American Idol in 2009. It was haunting and lovely, and I needed to know more. I found out it was the theme song for the _Donnie Darko_ (2001) film, which I promptly bought a copy and watched. It is sort of a sci-fi fantasy addressing themes of reality. Very good. After that, I learned what you started out with, the original song was by Tears for Fears in 1982. I didn't like that one at first, it was too different to what I was used to -- much faster, poppy, with a sort of Caribbean beat. I have grown to like it, though, but not as much as the slow, haunting version from the movie which Pentatonix covered so well here. Which is the long way of saying, I have a guess as to what the ghostly shadows are in this video. They are a callback to the disreality felt throughout _Donny Darko._ I don't know that for a fact, but IMO it fits.

Hi, again, I decided to break up this comment so it wasn't so long. I wanted to recommend some other a capella groups if you haven't discovered them yet. Home Free is five men and they are fabulous. They trend toward country/bluegrass, but the can (and do) do other genres. I'd start with their cover of "Man of Constant Sorrow" (from the movie "Oh, Brother Where Art Thou?"). You will be introduced to super beatboxer Adam Rupp (no, there is no harmonica in the video) and super bass Tim Foust. Home Free has fabulous vocals but they also incorporate humor in some of their videos (check out their cover of "Never Gonna Give You Up"). If you don't like country (I don't, but love Home Free), try their Sea Shanty Medley (and listen for Adam Rupp's castanets), "When a Man Loves a Woman", and Rob and Austin's (the two tenors) cover of "Nessun Dorma" (yes, opera--and they NAIL it). Voice Play is another of my "fab five" a capella groups. I'd start with "Hoist the Colors" (from the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie). Their cover of "Tennessee Whiskey" is beyond compare. Two really different covers are the theme to the video game "Halo" and the video game "Skyrim" (I didn't realize video games had such great music!!). They did a cover of "In the Hall of the Mountain King" that is great fun (and every time I watch it, I see a new nuance I missed before). My favorite of theirs is probably "Oogie Boogie Song" (from "The Nightmare Before Christmas") in which their great bass (Geoff Castelluci) takes the lead vocals. They had a great spooky Halloween song ("Hide and Seek (Ding Dong")") this year--just superb.
