I loved that you responded so strongly to Three Days which is my favourite on this album. Your appreciation of the album Pink Moon was really open too - so often people see that album as sad (I think because it was his last). I love Pink Moon, it’s my favourite album and I think there’s joy in it if you’re open to hearing it - you were.

Love this record! On the same level as Pink Moon in my opinion. Three Hours and Fruit Tree are two of the best songs Nick ever wrote. Fruit Tree's lyrics especially were so sadly prophetic with what happened to Nick. "Fame is but a fruit tree So very unsound It can never flourish ‘til its stock is in the ground" More or less predicts his own death and his posthumous recognition Really interesting similarity with Tinker Tailor and Riverman too. Love both those records, but I never noticed that before.

Absolutely agree. Those lyrics were sadly foreboding, but his approach couldn't have been more precise. Glad you noticed something new. Thanks for watching, mate. Cheers!

Lovely reaction. I'm so glad that I've been able to enjoy Nick for the past 16ish years. He's amazing and I can't help but feel some level of sorrow that he wasn't as widely recognized as he should have been. I love this album more than Pink Moon, I think. I have to listen to Bryter Layter again soon to see if I like it better. At one point I know it was for sure my favorite, but that was a while ago and things change.

Riverman is prob my fav... i love the beautiful dark you described. It reminds me of a dark meadow shaded by trees & mist in the air but still somehow light within the darkness. Giving it a scary pretty feel. I love radiohead & wouldnt be surprised if that was a sample. Good catch. I needa listen to more radiohead

"Oh those runs- Nick had golden fingers!" Nice reaction video to what I find to be a fantastic album. 3 albums that are close to perfection and mostly tragically ignored at the time but now have at least risen to its deservedly exalted status, at least among most who really listen. "How can even his minor compositions make me so happy". So true! And Robert Kirby arranged the strings for many of the songs.

Also, if you haven't already, the great John Martyn, a friend of Nick, wrote a beautiful song for him called 'Solid Air'. The live Germany 1979 is a great way to experience Big John. You are on Facebook, right, Tony (or anyone else here!) Ok, yesterday was the Virtual Annual Nick Drake Gathering, specially put together with clips of the village, the people, and many of us doing mostly covers of Nick's songs - many stunning, some not perfect, but it's our way of embodying Nick's spirit, and hopefully we will all be fully together next year in Tanworth-in-Arden. Anyway, you can watch it now it's up on the Facebook page of the Nick Drake Gathering! Thanks for spreading the beautiful songs of Nick!!

Now this is epic. This is my favorite album of Nick's. If you were thrown for a loop with this record after listening to Pink Moon, be prepared to be thrown again on Bryter Layter. On Nick's career, I feel like it's often expressed that he was kinda given a raw deal by the music industry, but he was very shy and awkward in live performances and he disliked doing interviews. He was just someone who was hard to accomodate in the industry. It was just an unfortunate situation altogether. Anyway, glad you liked this record! Edit: *glad
@tonywhitburn4 жыл бұрын
True. Looking at his story, one can tell he wasn't exactly open to many things that ironically, open the path for artists to be known. Perhaps he knew not everyone would connect with his music or was simply shy to the bone. Either way, the fact that his records survived and built a strong posthumous legacy that lasts to our days speaks for how strong his music is. Thanks for watching, mate. Cheers!

It was fun watching you, wholly amazed and perplexed at the 5/4 opening of River Man! haHa I've always been just as enthralled as you were by the strings, but there's also a nice version without them on the 2004 release, Made To Love Magic, which also includes a different take of Three Hours, some posthumously added strings, arranged by Robert Kirby on a couple of others, and Nick's last known recorded song, Tow The Line. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Made_to_Love_Magic Also, if you haven't heard them yet, look up Elton John's covers of Saturday Sun, and other Nick songs, done @ 1971 as a promotion while Nick was still alive (!)

I think Nick came around at the worst time commercially, the 60s were ending, the world was moving into hard rock and those who had enjoyed the folk revival were just too plentiful for a new face to make a name so late, fortunately for us 'current market' matters dissolve and quality remains to be enjoyed, unfortunately for him he never lived to see it

his lack of success during his lifetime was one of the many sources for his depression. I believe his debut was in the same quarter as Hendrix, Dylan, and others. The world was just too distracted for Nick. It would be decades before he became the legendary influence he always deserved to be. Ahh, poor Sisyphus.

Very good reaction! Could you listen to Weezer's "Pinkerton" album? Definitely the most loved album by weezer fans. I would love for you to react to the deluxe version of pinkerton but without the concerts ... only the b-sides. There is a story behind Pinkerton: it tells the story of 2 people in love (Maria and Jonas) who go to space ... with several secondary characters ... Originally all these songs were going to be on an album called "Songs From the Black Hole" (Operation Space Opera) but the album was canceled. It was officially going to be released after the blue album in 1995 with some very good songs that are only on that album like "Blast Off" or "Superfriend" and some that are on Pinkerton like "You Gave Your Love to Me Softly" or "You Won't Get With Me Tonight "like the b-sides. You can also find that album on youtube if you are interested. EDIT: The deluxe version of Pinkerton that I would like you to hear can be found as: Weezer - Pinkerton (Deluxe Edition) [Lives and Repeats Removed]

It was not a big seller because ND was cripplingly shy and hyper-sensitive to criticism. There is a documentary called "A skin too few" and that title, though cliché, I guess kind of sums up his state. He would not do the necessary to become a star or sell records. That is why we enjoy his work so much, because there is no artistic compromise on this or Pink moon.

probably you got the story already... but what you heard on "Pink Moon" was the swan song... Nick sold poorely with his firsts two record... so for Pink Moon there was not budget. Most of the people was not ready for that... but some where since groups like Pentangle did got enough recognition. Probably we will never know why Nick didn't get.

This album is probably my least favorite of the three, the song's are great though. It was heavily influenced by Randy Newman, and I think the arrangements on some of the songs sound a little too much like Newman and not enough like Nick . I much prefer Bryter Layter's arrangements. I found out years later it was John Cale that did them, so it's no wonder they're better. Less Americana and more English vibes anyway.

It's definitely not him on electric, only acoustic. The other instruments are people from Fairport Convention and Pentangle, part of the British folk revival which was an interesting movement that also greatly influenced Paul Simon. Bryter Layter is better though, that first instrumental track really lets you know you're in for a treat.

Yes, Richard Thompson played electric on this and Bryter Layter: which is not better, by the way - because they are both stunning and brilliant in their own way ;-)
