I hope you keep going through the discography! And word of warning -- if you listen to the Red Album, you HAVE to listen to the deluxe version. It is impossible to fairly judge the Red Album if you only hear the standard album tracklist. The Deluxe version is like the Director's Cut with all of the best stuff they cut out.

Later Weezer is not really awful disaster, it's more mixed, but still very compelling band, I am a fan of Make Believe, big fan of its melancholic feel, some songs I don't care for but I consider myself a fan, Haunt You Every Day is one of my favorite Weezer songs of all time

The most frustrating thing about this record for me is that they didn’t include one of their best songs ever written called “I Was Made For You” on it. It was written in 04 and for whatever reason they left it off Make Believe and never put it on an album, it only exists as a demo. It’s beautiful and magical and in my opinion could have been one of their biggest hits. HIGHLY suggest checking it out and honestly would be a great reaction video.

Peaks and Valleys It was fun to see your reaction Tony--i feel like you are pretty deep into the Weezer rabbit hole. I can tell because you talk to rivers haha. He's simultaneously so predictable and so chaotic and subversive. Thanks for this. Cheers :)

This is considered to be the band’s worst era critically, as people believed they have sold out. Don’t worry, they get good in the 2010s again!

I remember when "Make Believe" just came out and was surprised by all the negative criticism. I think it is important to understand the context of what was going on with Rivers at the time. I think he just started deeply practicing transcendental meditation and that effected the overall tone of this album. I have always applauded Weezer for going in new directions, so "Make Believe" was a welcome change for me.

So some background on this record: after Maladroit,Weezer was in a terrible place. Rivers banked everything on its success,in the same vein as the Green Album, even going as far as firing their manager and becoming the manger of the band himself...suffice to say,the album didn't reach the expected numbers and Rivers felt defeated,especially after all the fighting he'd already done with the fans over the direction the band was heading in. He had already started writing and uploading demos for their 5th album by this time,with a similar sound as Maladroit,but got scrapped (I suggest you listen to said demos from the time,they're some of the best stuff Weezer made in that entire decade,like Queen of Earth) The writing process for the new album got SO bad in fact,that pretty much every composition Rivers made and felt proud of was rejected by everyone around the studios,leaving him in somewhat of a writer's block,to the point that the band thought they would disband before this ever came to light. After a grueling 3 years,and Rivers changing his entire lifestyle for the better thanks to Rick Rubin's advice, Make Believe finally came out. It's clearly a record made up of compromises,where Rivers,either willingly or at the request of the label,decided to chase a blander,friendlier sound for many of its tracks (and lyrics too,just look at the chorus of Perfect Situation,even if I really love the song). Even though a lot of the material here can feel bland,there's still songs I hold dear in my heart from this era. And you can even catch glimpses of Rivers once again opening his heart in his songs,with "The Other Way", a song about his ex,who he's trying to comfort after the death of her fiancè, Elliot Smith,and having to confront the idea that he may still feel something for her,and is trying to console her for selfish reasons. Damn. With that said,I hope you'll like the Red Album! I think it goes underappreciated by a lot of people,since half of it is genuinely some of the best stuff Weezer has ever made,followed up by some weird experimental duds thrown in. Make sure you listen to the bonus tracks though,PLEASE. All 4 of them are incredible and it's a crime they were ever left out of the album!
@saudade347 Жыл бұрын
I do think you will be more found of Red since Rivers there goes to very different topics than just shyness and goes pretyt wilder into experimentation, for Weezer anyways lol

I'm pretty conflicted on this record. "This Is Such A Pity" and "Haunt Me Everyday" are some of my all time favorite Weezer tracks and yet they come from one of my least favorite albums. I liked the direction of the album. I think it had a lot going for it. Even Rick Rubin was signed on as producer, and I absolutely LOVE Rick Ruben, and I still disliked this record. I will say they're next album (The Red Album) corrected a lot of the problems I had with the band and is actually my favorite in their discography. Keep up the good work on your videos btw- love your content

Fun fact: Rivers learned tonpoay guitar from hair metal so ue knows how to shred. The blue album was them doing a complete 180 from the stuff theybusually lusten too. In an interview, rivers said they wouod beat uo anybody who even slightly played too hard or shreddy
@wmvnotmp4 Жыл бұрын
I don't dislike this album, but it was never my favorite just because the songs are kinda boring/forgettable imo. Also, it came off at a time where every band was doing this kind of album, so I guess distancing it from that makes it more digestable. I'll never understand why pitchfork gave it a 0.4/10 though
@MistaRowland Жыл бұрын
Just a minor correction: Rivers plays most of the awesome Weezer solos, not Brian.
@adootledo Жыл бұрын
This is one of Weezer's most overhated records imo. Maybe it's nostalgia coming into play but as a preteen when I got into Weezer I didn't focus on lyrics as much and so even now for me as an adult even though I can see the flaws of the record (especially the lyrics) it doesn't bother me specifically and I do have varying degrees of love for every single track on the record.

I feel after this, you should skip to either Everything Will Be Alright in The End or the White album. Definitely some of the band's matwrial.

Perfect Situation is a keeper. Beverly Hills seems to be written to be for when someone watching, "That's So Raven," wants to get "edgy." Other than that... so much meh. Nothing stands out much from one song to next. Lyrically we lost the vulnerability, naiveness, sorrow, repressed anger... And the music matched. So emotionless. Besides, drawing any comparison to the Outfield is definitely not raising the bar. 😁
@AG-lm5uf Жыл бұрын
Missed opportunity describes it perfectly. That’s their whole career after Pinkerton. A missed opportunity to make authentic genuine music, instead of what they did, which was listen to their label and work to manufacture a hit. When your intention is to sell records, this is what you get. A great idea given to people who exploit it for money. Like everything else.
@mikolaimooronomous389311 ай бұрын
only pointer I'd give you if you intend on carrying on through the whole discography at some point would be to just skip Raditude. It will make you lose all faith in Weezer and give up on them. just skip it. honestly, I'd argue the albums worth listening to based on from what I can tell about your tastes would be: White Album, OK Human, and MAYBE Everything Will Be Alright in the End. the rest are either really mediocre or pop music that I can't imagine you enjoying.
@tonymcdonald293210 ай бұрын
The weakest track on Make Believe is "Beverly Hills". It was solely a radio song to get their name on the air again. It has nothing to do with the feel of the rest of the album (besides the track "We Are All On Drugs"). The entire album is about self pity and having zero self worth while Beverly Hills is about living with the super stars with a very generic sounding beat.

I am so glad you’re continuing your Weezer journey but I would really really really advise you to skip straight to Everything Will Be Alright In The End (2014), then White Album (2016) and then definitely their SZNS EPs (2022) Trust me the rest sucks / just mediocre apart from Ok Human but that’s a purely orchestral album
@yoshifan52 Жыл бұрын
This is bogus, Hurley, and Red (if you include the deluxe songs) and even Raditude are pretty solid as well (barring Can’t Stop Partying, as funny as it is) PD and Black are pretty skippable though unless you’re a ride or die
