Well, Paco de Lucía is "the God of the guitarists"! He pushed the technical level to the highest point possible, he explored the base of the traditional flamenco guitar and made the style evolve with new harmonies/melodies and introducing new instruments, he also explored different music style like classical music (concerto de Aranjuez, Manuel de Falla) and Jazz (playing with John Mc Laughlin, Al di Meola, Larry Corriel, Chick Corea, etc). His music is so rich that you have to listen to his entire discography to understand how important he has been for the evolution of the guitar, because there are so many styles he has been through. By the way the version of "Entre dos aguas" you just listened was improvised, if you listen to the CD version or other live version it's going to be different. Paco de Lucia is just a monument of the music history, as a professional guitarist I have been inspired by him and I feel lucky to have been alive at the same time as him, I feel lucky to have been able to see him in concert at 5 meters from him several times.

I could spend hours talking about Flamenco and especially the great Paco de Lucia, the GOAT of guitar. I had the fortune to be able to attend 17 of his concerts and even managed on one occasion to talk to him - an incredibly humble and even shy person he seemed.Paco went through various stages in his career, revolutionizing everything, changing everything from the position to sit to play guitar to the guitar itself because before him guitarists used the typical Flamenco guitar made of white cedar and Andalusian pine. One day Paco started using what some call a "hybrid" guitar, a mix of classical concert guitar and Flamenco. In this way Paco discovered that when he wanted he could make it sound sweet and solemn like a classical guitar or aggressive and powerful like a Flamenco guitar. He rethought the harmonies, explored other genres, for example in the famous Friday Night at San Francisco concert in 1981 when he improvised with Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin. here are two examples paco de Lucia Sextet: Solo quiero caminar kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2nZoWmIpc-tqck PAco, Di Meola; McLaughlin kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXiYZq2OgMd2bJI I hope you enjoy

The vibrato that Paco de Lucía puts in his music, plucking the strings so hard, is not something that anyone has the courage to do. This shows not only an overwhelming faith in his fingers (which had to be very strong to be able to do it), but an overwhelming confidence in his own skill, which leaves you with your mouth open, especially with the speed at which he moves his fingers, both by the neck as well as by the strings. Simply hypnotic.

The amazing thing is Paco did not read music. So in order to learn the classical piece, he would look up in a music book an explanation for any note he didn't understand. It took him about 20 days to understand the piece, then he played it on tour in South America to polish it. When he went to Spain for its premiere it was the most nervous he's ever been in his life because he knew a lot of great guitarists and music critics would show up (and he was afraid that a lot of classical guitarists would blast him, a flamenco player for trying to play a classical piece). Outside of a few critics (and even the best classical musicians can expect the occasional less than stellar review from at least one critic), it became THE best interpretation of the work - with even the composer Rodrigo praising Paco's performance (and coming on stage with Paco for the curtain call.

The genre is: 'RUMBA FLAMENCA". As Flamenco has different subgenres. There is the SOLEA FLAMENCA which is a kind of sad guitar. Also there is the " BURLERIA FLAMENCA", which is more dynamic and, of course this one subgenre called RUMBA, this is fast, with percussion and with some roots of African, Middle East and Gipsy influence which, by The way, is the main ingredient in Flamenco in general. Flamenco couldn't have existed without the Gipsies.
