When I first heard this album I was totally blown away, I’d heard Mysterons and had to have the album, there really is nothing like them. Beth Gibbons also did a great album with Rustin Man called Out of Season. Some more classic 90’s British albums worth checking out; Bring it On by Gomez, Felt Mountain by Goldfrapp (this one is a must listen), Free the Bees by The Bees, Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space by Spiritualized.

Hi Simon Austin. That's so true. Mysterons was my gateway track into Portishead also. Bought the album shortly after its release in 1994. I was also into all your other suggested music too back in the day. Clearly, a man of good musical taste.

You need to watch the live concert Live At Roseland NYC so you can see the musicianship and turntablism. You also need to give their music a listen on loud stereo speakers. Next album is slightly better.

Dude! I was just listening to Portishead earlier this morning, your timing couldn't be better. Definitely check out their self titled album, all time classic IMO. Also if you would like a similar but different flavor of trip hop you need to check out "Big Calm" by "Morcheeba." For me it is an album I can play from start to finish every time. I can't imagine you not enjoying it if you like this. Thanks for the react, have a good day!

Trip Hop has to be 'the' most underrated genre of all time. I feel most people who get exposed to it absolutely get it ... but it barely gets any love or promotion from the mainstream ... so it has been severely overlooked, which is (much like a lot of the genre itself) pretty sad.

Great album, great reaction. There are a few other groups from around this time you might dig as well like The Cardigans (the "Gran Turismo" album in particular), and the Sneaker Pimps. There was also a group from the early 00's called Denali who you might enjoy that are in a similar vein, though a bit more on the indie rock end. Glad to see you got "Koi No Yokan" on wax too, appreciated the cameo.

If you were a teenager in the 90s, it's impossible to hear the first couple of seconds of this album and not instantly get those nostalgia shivers eta: The other hugely known song on the album is' Roads', which was featured in the 1995 movie adaptation of Tank Girl - which, afair, was pretty damn popular - check it out purely for the scene with that song, if you haven't seen it

Portishead, Bjork, and Faith No More. I became an adult listening to these groups. As a hard-core hip hop head, these were played heavily in my car.

Whoops - the solo in Pedestal isn't a sax, it's a trumpet with a harmon-mute in it; also the intro to Strangers is a sample from an old Weather Report record (enough said?)

Love your reaction to this. It pays respect to this masterpiece. Every voice and instrument in all these songs is amazing. Scratching and timing/momentum is 11/10. Hey, awesome reaction to this classic album. You show some great musical insights about these tracks and genre. In the video said you wondered what did people feel about this album when it was released? Well, as one of those lucky people who bought it way back in 1994 and have listened to it consistently ever since, I can tell you the experience was absolutely mind-blowing, and felt like nothing that had come before. So yeah, It was pretty damn special for sure. Both Portishead and Massive Attack are incredible Trip Hop acts and have influenced so much other music and musicians that came afterwards. I have subbed to your great channel and would love to see you react to Portishead's second album sometime, if you could? Their awesome second album is simply named ... 'Portishead' (lol, so good, they named it after themselves). Oh, and if you're still thinking that 'Dummy' was their sad, dark and creepy album, you ain't heard nothing yet.
@Music-tg5is3 жыл бұрын
Oh, I think I should add, my two favourite bands, from the 90s up to this day are 'Portishead' and 'Radiohead' (I guess two heads really are better than one, lol). So, I obviously noticed the artwork on the wall behind you ... Gotta respect anyone with that much Radiohead appreciation.

See if you can find all the B-Sides and bonus tracks from this first album era. There’s multiple alternative versions, and tracks like “Tribute to Monk and Canatella” and “Theme from ‘To Kill a Dead Man’” and even a heavy metal version of Sour Times called “Airbus Reconstruction”.

We ended up being one of the first stores to sell lots of it. At one point all of new york had sold 25 and our one store in chicago had sold over 100. I would recommend the german band Tocotronic to you. They are indie legends in the german speaking countries and helped establish a new subgenre of indie rock in the 90s called Hamburger Schule. Thats a style known for pretty clever and deep lyrics with a leftis attitude and mostly consists of musicians who in the general would be considered as uncool nerds in that time. I would recommend Digital ist besser or Wir kommen um uns zu beschweren, if you want to hear their great early lofi stuff or K.O.O.K, self titled, or Pure Vernunft darf niemals siegen if you would like to hear more modern 2000s pixieesque indie rock. I think it could be a good start to dig into european, not english language, indie.
