Actually "Side effects" is a psytrance (psychedelic trance) music and apparently they are the FIRST ever kpop group to use that genre. The song might be loud and different, but the song "side effects" actually affects your brain to calm down the nerves. They used trance music, which it calms down the limbic brain and brings down stress. When you thought the song might give you headache, they actually calm you down. The mv is quite different because it's part of their storyline. But the lyrics is about having regrets and anxiety that comes as a consequence after making a decision. The listener might feel uncomfortable while listening to the song, but that's the purpose of it. They're trying to express it how it feels like. It gives them discomfort feeling when doubting their choices, never fully confident in their own decision for the fear of failure and inability to overcome the challenges at hand. So as you can see there's 2 ver of them, the other 'them' took the bus for comfort while the other one took the "road not taken" or the unknown path. This is also related to them as artists, which means they need to go through all the hardships and consequences that comes to their way for being one of the self-produced groups. Like the voice at the chorus said "Common Side Effects include: nervousness, insomnia, nausea, agitation, anxiety, sweating, Vision problems, numbness, psychosis , dizziness, headaches, weight loss" They're are really geniuses for using that genre. Now a lot of groups had been using it too, like Dreamcatcher and Ateez. React more to Stray Kids! 😊

Side Effects is one of my fave SKZ songs, & I’m a STAY who knows & loves every song they’ve ever put out. If you study the lyrics it’s clear that they want the listener to feel disoriented & out of sorts with the rhythm switches & out of sync patterns, because it matches the mental & emotional state being described in the song. Their willingness to write about much deeper topics than is typical of Kpop is one of many reasons they’re my fave boy group Another is the side effects of choosing to go their own way making all of their music themselves and therefore taking the harder path in order to become a successful idol group instead of letting their company do everything for them and taking the so called “easy” path. The second story then leads to many of the members having insomnia, anxiety, feeling stressed and much more which concludes to them feeling the side effects.
