When this album came out 30 years ago it absolutely floored me. I still cannot keep a dry eye whenever I hear this song. Tori is a singular talent. There are so many outstanding pianist/singer/songwriters out there and she may be the best of them all. Yeah, I said what I said.

I’m 44 and in the 90s with all the great great bands …. When Tori showed up to the festival ..SHE WAS THE STAR AMONGST THESE BANDS. She was a one woman wrecking crew in the 90s. She was bigger than most main stream bands and she never got any radio airplay only word of mouth… KROQ the main alternative rock station in LA in the 90s had Tori headline a lot of their musical festivals even thought they never really played her music on air…. That’s how much she was respected and popular in the 90s

I discovered her on KROQ, I remember Crucify and, later, Winter playing alongside Nirvana and Depeche Mode back then. Little Earthquakes is a timeless masterpiece (as is Violator 😁). Although there was only 1 solo album of hers out at the time, each CD single had like half a dozen amazing B-sides. Amazing artist and talent.

This performance is absolutely gut wrenching, I saw her twice live in the 90's based on curiousity more than anything, as I was a metal and grunge, classic rock guy. Her piano playing and singing were just amazing. When you left her shows, you were emotionally spent. There's no one like her.

I love her. Thanks for reacting to Tori. Her emotion when playing live is unmatched, in my opinion. A lot of people compare to her to Kate Bush (I love them both), but Tori is a road tour warrior. Kate has not nearly had the same tour career that Tori has had. And Tori is always with her piano. She could play Mozart by ear at age 2.

Tori was a piano prodigy! Started at Peabody academy at age 4! Saw concert in 1997! Usually 3 pianos around her. Plays them all in some songs! Her song list is endless!!! Crucify, Baker Baker, Little Earthquakes! More more!! No singer writer or performer like Tori. She Makes love to the piano, and many times to the piano bench as well! She’s raw and real.❤❤❤

My aunt introduced me to Tori and I’ve now seen her 3 times in concert (so far..). She is an utterly amazing singer, song writer, pianist and performer. You can go to her concert, not know a single song, and be utterly captivated for the entire night. She is, above all, a storyteller in her music, using metaphor, description and emotion to convey meaning - and she’s just so damned good at it! I don’t think there are many artists like Tori, her style can be quirky - she can go from light and fun to dramatic and raw; but she’s an artist who has spent her career experimenting with her music and sound, shifting and evolving and I love that. Her lyrics are often deep and hit on all sorts of themes, such as politics and religion, but they’re always couched in deep personal experience which is what makes it connect with an audience. She’s still producing music and I, for one, am grateful!

Just to add to the emotion of this performance, Tori's parents were in the audience, and I'm not certain if it was the first time they'd heard the song, but it's very likely it was the first time they saw it with an audience.

Sabina, thanks so much for discovering Tori. Her last name is pronounced AAmos. One of my favorite American song writer/vocalists of her generation. A native of New York, NY. Tori was a child music prodigy who studied piano at Gulliard Music Academy and turned that classical technique to popular music. Her album "Little Earthquakes" (1992) is full of unique, emotional truth. My. personal favorite is "Crucify".

By the way, "Winter" is and will rest for me one of my all time favourite song with some like "Time After Time" by Cindy Lauper," Show Me " by ABC or "Waiting for a girl like you " by Foreigner.❤

What a beautiful song, not one I have heard before. Her singing diction is spot on as is her piano playing. The lyrics suggest a life without her father, who sounds as though he may be facing a life closure. I love her ability to project a story with feeling..almost auto biographical perhaps? The range of songs and genres on this channel is why it continues to grow and stand out from the other reaction channels…long may that continue. Tori Amos is always great at putting raw emotions in her songs. This song has a rather psitive tone. Often her songs are much more serious and dealing with internal struggles. So I back Eric's suggestion at looking into the song Crucify for instance (and be sure to check the lyrics). Tori is also a natural live performer. While her albums are great, she always manages to put even more emotion into her live performances. You can see how she lives her music. Another interessting suggestion would be to see her cover of "Smells like Teen Spirit" from Nirvana. It is certainly one of the most memorable covers because it is so different. The memorable performance for that version is Montreux 1992

I think you'd appreciate Sia's "breathe me" (especially the kcrw 2007 performance). It's just as intense and emotional as Tori, if not more. It's about when Sia was at her lowest. Sia was really at breaking point and wanted to commit suicide. (but luckily didn't).; As far as Tori goes, this whole Montreux performance is master. "Me and a gun" is an acapella song about her real-life experience being raped (although the gun was, in fact, a knife). It's defenitely another gem in the Tori catalogue to check out!

The themes of fathers expectations, him being proud of you and your own inertia hits hard. I don't care for all of Tori's work, it often gets too jammy in lack of a better word. But her stuff from the 90's are is very good. Cornflake girl, Crucify, Sorta Fairytale, God, Silent all these years, Me and a Gun (dive into that last one at you own peril).

Sabina, Winter was about Tori's Father, who was a small town minister/preacher in the Southern US who couldn't deal with her being something he didn't want.
@Wungolioth
@Wungolioth 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely NOT what this song is about, by the way. This song is about her father, yes, a minister, encouraging Tori to love herself, to not let bullies, bad boyfriends, ect. drag down her self esteem, the white horses in bed are her potential, and the last verse and chorus are Tori turning it around to him, acknowledging his sacrifices for her to reach her potential, his horses have gone ahead. When her father was trying to find places for then 13 year old Tori to perform, the only places that embraced her were Washington, D.C. area gay bars and clubs, to which her father would accompany her. I don't understand how you get the impression that Tori had written anything negative about her father in this song, there are subtle criticisms of her father and his religion in later songs, but not this one.

@@guytansbariva2295 Tori was born in a small NC town, coincidentally, as her parents were visiting family there, but most of her early years she lived in the Baltimore/DC area, where her father ministered, and where she was accepted at the Peabody Musical Conservatory at the age of 5 for her piano playing skills, to this day the youngest person to ever be accepted. I don't think she really had much time to wallow in small town drudgery. She was kicked out of that program at age 11 because she refused to learn to read sheet music and she didn't properly worship dead white composers, she rebelled against classical training.
