I don’t understand a few of the major critiques of this album from you: “it is not Trench 2”, “it is disconnected”, “it is not heavy on the lore”. The question is: what would you want them to do? 1. Make a straight up copy of Trench sound, sprinkle in more lore and then send it? This would make no sense: the core point of tøp is that their music constantly changes. Making an album with the same ideas and sound would mark the stagnation of the band. This is not optimal and this would make this album boring. 2. I was kinda seeing the whole “it is disconnected” theme when the album first dropped. However, then I read a comment on reddit and it all started making sense. This album is Clancy’s story. It is about his struggles, about him backsliding and then snapping back, about him battling his addictions (Vignette) about him learning important life lessons (Oldies Station), about him finding the one and only who can help him swim the paladin strait. That is what this album is about. 3. And the whole lore stuff also works in this context. Escaping the DEMA is about learning how to deal with insecurities, with mental problems, and that’s what Clancy is succeeding in at the end! He finally has the courage to swim the paladin strait after reliving the most important points of his life, now seeing he has people who actually can help him get through all this. Clancy escaped DEMA. That album is beautiful man, still, I’m open to others’ opinions on this album.
@calebrafus74932 ай бұрын
This album is beautiful. I can't lie, it was marketed completely wrong, and it wasn't what we expected. I didn't expect a trench part 2, but I expected it to be as lore heavy or as epic. For example, Trench has Jumpsuit/Levitate, Bandito, Leave The City. Stuff that makes the album feel alive. Still a fantastic album.
@maris_molotov2 күн бұрын
Been listening for about half a year now and I gotta say, these criticisms have made more and more sense to me as time has gone on. I loved this album when it first came and it's just gone down and down and down. It's incredibly odd for this album to seemingly go out of its way to include songs that have nothing to do with the world lore considering the way it was marketed. Trench included lots of deep emotional songs about the mental state of Clancy while still actually feeling like a trip through another world, while this one has a song about Ohio. (I saw them live - I'm a fan, I swear - and they transitioned Jumpsuit into Midwest Indigo and there are few things that have ever made me sadder.) The release of The Line last night, a song that I enjoyed considerably more than most of Clancy, reaffirmed my feelings that Clancy just isn't that good at executing its emotional cores. The hook on Snap Back and the verses on Paladin Strait are boosted for seemingly no reason and to me it comes off as Tyler really struggling to sell his emotional investment. I also just... don't like... the production, I guess. You can say "It's not trying to be Trench 2 it's trying to be its own thing!" but that just doesn't change that it's got no big instrumental moments that make me feel in the same way the outros to Morph, Cut My Lip, and Bandito did. The outro to Backslide and that one silly instrument on Vignette feel like they're trying to convey something but I feel nothing. I like that one riff on Navigating but I can't give it points when it never evolves throughout that song. The only part of the album where I really like the instruments is on overcompensate, the craving, the outro to Paladin Strait, and Routines in the Night. I'm just kinda disappointed. I do agree when Brad says this is Blurryface 2. And even Blurryface had a lot of catchy bridges, while half the songs here forget to have a bridge or are extremely blatant like Vignette's or confusing like ATRoFD. Overcompensate is still one of their top 5 songs though. Could've just stuck with that tbh.
@ij33592 күн бұрын
@maris_molotov I kinda agree on the fact this album is a lot less volumetric when it comes to instrumentals. The Hype, Legend and Neon Gravestones are probably my most favourite tracks out of all of their discography, The Hype’s instrumental version feels like a completely different and unique experience. However, emotion and lyric -wise, I think this album did a great job! The whole album feels like a constant fear of “backsliding” and I feel like it executes it perfectly! Constant rollercoaster of emotions here feel really suitable. And yeah, some songs do feel out of place, Routines (which, don’t get me wrong, I fucking adore) and Midwest Indigo COULD be left out and the album would not lose any substance concept-wise. But I don’t agree with the Blurryface comparison. IMO, not only does Clancy go for a completely different approach in terms of its sound, but it is also much more mature in every possible direction: instrumentally, lyrically and vocally. And the production has skyrocketed in terms of quality since then. Everything sounds so much better. But of course, all of this is debatable. So yeah, Clancy isn’t really perfect, but I think it’s an extremely solid album And, funnily enough, Overcompensate is probably my least favourite song off of Clancy. I really like the opening, but don’t vibe with the verses. And btw, The Line is fucking sick, it’s giving off Trench vibes and Tyler’s vocals there are magnificent! Really hope their future work will take a similar approach.

There's no money in a level-headed off-camera evaluation anymore. Brad's quality as a reviewer started to nosedive as soon as he switched to this stream-based format, and although the entertainment value has skyrocketed, I pretty much no longer come to him for reputable music takes untainted by the whims of a live audience (except maybe his year end lists where he's had time to sit with the albums.) This culture of being reactionary above all else is really harmful towards having and exercising media literacy. (p.s. I don't really mess with this album that much either, I think it's just okay, I'm commenting on the greater issue instead of trying to defend 21P or anything)

I don't agree, there's no real indication that the album loops beyond a sudden end silence and I don't think Overcompensate would make a great deal of sense as a continuation of what we get at the end of Paladin Strait. What's more noteworthy is that the "So few, so proud, so emotional" echoes "the few, the proud and the emotional" from Fairly Local, the first single of the Blurryface album cycle. In that sense it is absolutely a loop - Clancy has in some way fallen into Nico's trap in an attempt to put an end to this.

I think this album is impressively mature considering how offensively cringey their entire body of work is. The band seems tired of this Dema storyline and is clearly trying to get their fans to move on and grow up with them (Oldies Station is clearly Tyler telling the fans it's okay to get older and let go). Tyler also said it would be their most "straightforward" album and I think the end result is a really moving, diverse album that reflects the crossroads the band is at (and Tyler, who seems to be content with where he is but is haunted by lingering mental illness and the realization that he's aging). I also think you had to be really into the album rollout to get behind what Clancy is going for. Most of the hyping up came from fans who were eager for an end to the story, but the band really downplayed that angle. You can really hear the narrative fatigue in some of these songs. Tyler straight up ended all the speculation by dumping out a lore video, which made it so that the only narrative implication Clancy had to fulfill was "Clancy and Nico finally fight", which does happen. This time, though, the band has their own sound and weren't bending the music to fit the themes of the lore or the aesthetic of the "era" they created. All that is to say that this is the best TOP has ever been because it's the least confined they've ever been. This is them just making music to make music (Lavish and Backslide excellently document Tyler's disillusionment with stardom and the accompanying conformity) and it sounds really, really, really great. A perfect response to the bland artificiality of SAI.

I’m not even gonna hide it, Josh ABSOLUTELY carried Tyler on this album. Josh really put in the work to make some creative, fun, and energetic drumbeats on this album and Tyler just wasted those beats with some of the writing throughout this album. This album seriously ONCE AGAIN left me feeling utterly disappointed. I seriously love this band with my whole heart but they are making it so hard to defend them nowadays. Tyler is a GRAMMY AWARD WINNING songwriter yet for some reason it feels like he’s not putting in the same energy as when he was on his come up or even when they gave us Trench. I really was ecstatic about where the band would take us in this next project but I guess they really weren’t joking when they said they said "don’t believe the hype". It really does feel like Tyler believes that they are too big to fail, and once again Josh really put in the effort to make sure that his parts in this album sounded great and he’s still putting in the same effort as when he first came into the band. As a fan of this band for well over a decade, this one is a 6/10 for me.

But like, every album only ever had 2-3 songs that were directly related to lore in the MVs, this is no different? Trench was the same (Jumpsuit, Nico and the Niners, Levitate). Honestly, after going through the tracks and the videos, and especially after their livestream, it feels like they actively tried to mislead us. The trailer said the story would conclude here, but then Tyler said something like, “Does it sound like it's over?” in an interview a few days ago. The visuals and lyrics clearly have other priorities besides the Dema universe, too. I think we're gonna get a lot more clarity on what their true plan is when the video for Paladin Strait comes out.

Backslide is, in the lore DEMA related, but as a believer in Christ its the feeling of holding out and not wanting to fall back to sinful ways. It’s not just a specific Christian thing, backsliding is a universal concept for people falling back into their old ways
@Schmitty345 ай бұрын
@@christopherlyndsay8611 Backsliding (Backslider) was coined Biblically Proverbs 14:14 (It being written however means it was most likely used beforehand, but nevertheless is very popular in the Christian Community). Today it's now used everywhere, but the obvious nods to him picking up bread, and not wanting to backslide, realizing he lost and going back for more is the word of God. Take a seat with the crease in it, Luke 8:11. Sinking under water and it going over his head, Peter sinking in the storm and "reaching out" (throw me one more line) to Jesus and then coming back to security. Yes, I probably shouldn't have just written a paragraph but this song (in my non professional opinion) had God written all over it. However it relates to you is subjective, and if you made it this far thanks for listening to my TED talk.

trench actually had that twenty one pilots style that everyone expected from them but improved and honed, everything since has just been quirky for the sake of quirky. I literally cant fathom how this happened with their sound. TLDR: Balls the Album
@Nathaniel-nb8du6 ай бұрын
As a tøp fan, I agree with Bradly on this one. Here are several critiques I have on this album, considering it was advertised as a sequel to Trench: 1. It doesn't sound like it took three years to make. A lot of the writing here sounds rushed, and it doesn't help that the music videos were quickly made to release with the album. Don't get me wrong, that's a lot of work they did, and I appreciate the intention, but it would have been smarter to follow up a conceptual album like Trench with few, but well made music videos that continue the Trench/Clancy storyline. 2. Clancy lacks a direction both sonically and thematically. Trench is a great album, because it tells a compelling story from beginning to end. The journey from Jumpsuit to Leave the City is one where every song earns its place. Every song felt like a character beat that built up to a climax that was earned. I was surprised that the first three songs on Clancy are singles, simply because they feel so wildly different from one another. They feel like three different stories instead of working together as one. 3. While I think Scaled and Icy is still their worst album musically speaking, I have to give it credit in that it still felt consistent with the lore and storyline. You can hear the underlying nervousness stifled under the artificial stereo-friendly pop hits pumped out on it. With Clancy however, I was struggling to piece together the overarching story, until Paladin Straight, a conclusion that I like, but don't know how I got there. There's a famous saying that it is the journey that counts, not the destination, and that's what I felt was missing on this record. I admit I haven't followed the lore for this new album cycle much. Maybe that would help tie the songs together, but at this point I'm just hungry for some well-written songs.
