And you were right, with Queen always expect something intense, grandiose...and they deliver, every time. Brian May wrote this song about a girl he liked but hadn't the courage to approach... The glass is in Freddie's hand because it was Christmas, and he's toasting the crowd. After this absolute masterpiece (chills all over, every time), what about reacting to The March of the Black Queen? You'll thank your headphones 😉 kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaClfpuulMajlck - official lyrics video kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKnXZ2mYf86Vjpo - a video montage Enjoy 😉🤩❤️‍🔥👑

The most amazing thing about this performance is that some of the guys were sick. Like, literally sick. It was a cold winter night, Freddie and Roger had the flu and were burning up with fever that night, but the adrenaline rush kept them going. The thing I love the most about Queen is the passion you can feel in every performance. They loved what they were doing.

The power and the passion of this performance is unmatched by any other band that I can think of. I grew up during the sixties and seventies, I was fortunate enough to see Queen three time in the 70s and nobody could match these guys. They were so technical and so precise in their musicality, but the stage performance was what captivated the audience, especially Freddie. It was almost impossible to take your eyes off of him on stage - but just listen to Brian, John and Roger - absolutely spectacular!!!

It is soooo fun watching you learn about Queen! One of the best things about Freddie is that he never just sang or performed a song. No, he inhabited the song....he became the song....it sounds hokey but he and the music became one and the same. And that is part of why he is so fascinating to watch, no matter what kind of song he sings. Thanks for this reaction!!!

I think of White Queen as a Gothic romance with medieval fantasy overtones. A world of Knights and Queens, magicians and courtly love... Brian (as writer) and Freddie (as singer) transform a college crush into a musical masterpiece! Another intensely romantic song I think you'd enjoy is You Take My Breath Away, Live in Hyde Park, 1976. This time it's Freddie's own song, with just him, solo at the piano, holding a rowdy crowd spellbound, and of course taking everyone's breath away.

He also, throughout his entire career, instructed crew and support staff to always be respectful and treat fans well, even when some were a little rowdy trying to get on the stage and/or get back stage to meet them. Truly a great human being, full of love and something so many stars of Queen's caliber lack, gratitude. He never forgot, to his dying day, that they would have been nothing without us.

@@dianedavies8291 What a wonderful memory to have!! Where was this concert? I'm 72 years old, so hypothetically could have gone to a concert but I never even heard of Queen until a couple years ago. I know that sounds impossible but I joined a conservative church in 1974 and didn't listen to any music for 40 years. Actually I never did listen to music much, the Beatles in the 60s and radio station KOMA which had a wide ranging signal when I was in high school. From 1968-71 I lived in a rural hippie community with no electricity. But I love Queen now and am particularly taken with Freddie. The lads really did seem like such approachable guys. Very sweet.

This is one of the most beautiful songs ever by any band. This show was on Christmas Eve and Freddie had just raised a toast to the audience which he did at many of their shows so that is what the glass is all about, he just hadn't put it down yet. Freddie is playing the melody to Brian's guitar solo throughout that entire 1 min 45 second instrumental portion. I can't believe that the camera did not pan to Brian as he was absolutely shredding it during that solo but Freddie was outstanding on the piano as well so for me, it is a total feast for the senses, the two of them playing off of each other and Roger and John holding it all together on the rhythm. Thanks for reacting to this song.

I've wondered about that, too. But maybe, as this was televised in the UK, it was after this show that Freddie (being the crack the whip boss when necessary) began insisting on Brian being the camera's focus when doing his guitar solos (though this was, technically, a duet between the two men). That said, I'm glad we have this because I can't think of another performance where ALL the attention is on Freddie banging out that melody so beautifully for so long. I love watching his fingers and hands doing everything trained pianists are taught not to do, and doing it majestically.

Maybe. But I can see even little boy Freddie responding to a crack on the knuckles with a roundhouse punch. Could’ve also contributed to his ditching the lessons after just a couple years. His fingers and wrists were more than double jointed- it’s said he could bend his hands all the way back. And he certainly had flexible joints elsewhere, thus his ability to go to the floor, sit on his calves, and bend his upper body all the way back. Not to mention the iconic photos of him standing and bending backwards at the waist, singing into the mike he’s holding above his mouth. Only a few people still living probably know all of Freddie’s hidden talents. 😉

Fun fact (for y'all new to the Queen game): The first of 3x I saw them live was in 1974 which was their first time playing in the U.S. They were, not kidding, the warm up band for Mott the Hoople (who are VASTLY underrated themselves). So Queen's set was abbreviated, 8 songs I think, and an encore because, of course, they were already THAT good! Anyway, that was the only time I saw them perform this song and it was as amazing as what you're seeing here. Fun fact (for me and everybody back in the 70's pretty much): The only other song I really remember from that '74 show was "Keep Yourself Alive" because my friends and I enjoyed a bit too much weed on the way to the show. However, I do remember it was impossible to take your eyes off of Freddie Mercury, and not just for his singing, piano playing, or even his flamboyant performance-- he genuinely was a force of nature. Exotic, unusual, unique. Mesmerizing. Love, love, love watching you enjoy him and the whole band as much as I did and still do. Bravo, and a big welcome to the family. I truly believe Freddie's beaming and so proud, finally, of what he was when he was here. Can't blame God for wanting him back so quickly. 💛

Aagghhh....the song that literally plays your soul. If I am not mistaken, Brian wrote this one, and was about a girl he liked in college maybe? But she didn't know him and he was no secure enough to approach her, if he tried words wouldn't form to talk to her, so she got away not knowing Brian liked her. It was something along those lines. The interlude, just hypnotized you. All the instruments are so perfect it sounds like they are communicating with one another and playing your very soul at the same time.

This was Christmas Eve and the drink in Freddie’s hand was from the toast he had made to the audience at the end of the previous song. Even though it was meant to look like Champagne, I suspect it was only water (Freddie’s roadie ‘Ratty’ said he never had wine on stage) and just quietly, I’ve drunk enough wine to know the colour is not right 😉. So no, there was no symbolism with the drink in the way that you mean, although the fact that they’d been asked to do this concert which was filmed and televised live, meant they had finally “made it”, so they had something to celebrate there too. The ironic thing was that Bohemian Rhapsody had not long been released, so the sales from that hadn’t yet kicked in and they were still under the “guidance” of their first manager Norman Sheffield. They already had 3 previous albums with moderate success and several international tours under their belts but still had no money. They owed money to their crew and lighting guys, yet Norman Sheffield was swanning around in a Rolls Royce and building a swimming pool. Freddie was absolutely pissed off. If Bohemian Rhapsody had flopped they most likely would have had to split up. Freddie wrote the ultimate diss track about Norman Sheffield. He didn’t mention his name but Norman dobbed himself in when he sued them for slander, they settled out of court and they got new management. So if you want to hear what Freddie thought about Norman Sheffield, check out Death On Two Legs, but I’d suggest the official lyric video for this one. The lyrics are vitriolic and Freddie’s voice is scathing. He pulled no punches and you are left with absolutely no question about his feelings. It’s hair raising, I’m warning you 🖤⚠️☢️☠️

You're right about symbolism, especially in this song and the album the song is from - the album is called "Queen Ⅱ", and it had two sides: Black side and White side. Brian May (the lead guitarist) wrote the songs on the White side, including "White Queen". Freddie wrote the songs on the Black side, including "The March of the Black Queen" (it's a masterpiece, an older sister to "Bohemian Rhapsody"). During that period of time the boys always wore black or white on stage (Freddie usually started the show in white costume and ended it in black). Freddie painted his fingernails black, and Brian painted his white.

Hello again! Queen again, yay! I literally have a list of Queen songs in my head to play according to my various moods. That is how diverse their music is which is actually very rare. Freddie in particular feels music, I don’t know how else to describe it? You see it all over the place but the first time I thought of it in that way was after watching the One Vision documentary. There is a part in that documentary where Freddie is working with Roger on a particular drum section. Freddie is in the booth, standing up and listening for a certain sound. And then his entire body moves to it. When you see this, you start to notice it everywhere with him. It is so rare, this particular talent. We all go to work, we all have different moods. But imagine Freddie before a concert, faced with this full range of different styles of music, and no matter what mood he is in going in, when he steps on that stage he automatically adjusts to every single song, and he is in that song 100% for the duration, the feeling, the emotion, he smoothly transitions his mood, which comes out to the audience with feeling and emotion of that song. Then again. And again. Add to that their grueling tour schedule on any given year, you really appreciate how talented and rare he was. Add the voice, add the talent of the band, these particular 4 people, and it is magic. You also can see why a certain section of us have trouble with today’s music. When you had Freddie and Michael Jackson, and Bob Marley, and so many others, today’s music almost sounds too perfect to my ear. I don’t mind the mess ups, the notes messed, a crack in the voice. That tells me it is real, at least for the way I grew up listening to music. I have gotten better with today’s music but there are times that I wish 4 really talented people who can sing, play instruments and write music would give this a go again. I really hope that happens in my lifetime. Waiting for your next reaction! ❤️

@@RadJarrettTheIntrovert thank you! You are building a great channel, for sure! I am a thinker and a detailed kind of person. I had a coworker one time tell me, we end up with the same solution but you come at it backwards. 😂 I called that out of the box. So like you, I notice things. I am an introvert, although I grew up with 2 older brothers and developed social skills to the point that people think I am a people person extrovert. Got them fooled! It was the only way to survive with the brothers I have. Had to be smart, think fast, and always be ready. No thinking time and had to react immediately. It was a crazy way to grow up but I think it ended up okay. Nobody messes with me, that is for sure. One brother would hide and jump me and if I didn’t react fast enough with certain moves, start yelling at the top of my lungs and then hitting and kicking various places, we had to go through it again. The other brother, while watching tv, would just suddenly zip a hand size ball at my head. Had to catch it one handed. That was the rule. Left and right. It was total madness with those two. But then I would go to my room, my happy introverted place and be me. That is why I told you always be you, what you contribute matters. As it does for us all..... ❤️

Freddie was holding a glass because it was Christmas eve and he had just toasted the audience. "White Queen" was written by guitarist Brian May for his previous band "Smile" in 1968, several years before the band “Queen” would be created. The song details the story of the speaker’s lost love, (The White Queen) for whom he continues to wait for in agony. This song and "The March Of The Black Queen" (both songs were included on the Queen II album) are said to have influenced frontman, Freddie Mercury’s decision to name the band “Queen”.

Great to know the backstory of this song from the comments section - thanks guys! But you aren't far off with wondering about the glass. In the 70s there were lots of songs that dealt with fantasy subjects.. I'm not exactly sure why - maybe to do with the remnants of the hippie era and or our first rocket to the moon (hence Bowie with Ziggy Stardust, Elton John with Rocket Man etc) - seems like Queen, in their first few albums had a foray into this genre - but they do everything so well so who cares right??!!!!!

such a beautiful song, Freddie's in stellar vocals. Yeah, beautiful but depressing aka a Brian May song. I wish the cameraman had focused on both Freddie & Brian during the fabulous piano/guitar piece there. We see only Freddie yet hear Brian's guitar just singing away. Such Magic! Also, Roger on drums & John on bass compliment "White Queen" perfectly. Thank you for reacting.

One of my top 5! A masterpiece written by Brian May in the early days. The focus is entirely on Freddie which is understandable but the guitar contribution is equally incredible. Casual fans don’t realize how many of their songs he wrote. Read somewhere that the name Queen may have come from this song. Anyways, guess you should do March of the Black Queen also. They never performed it live but it is a technological marvel for it’s time!

Hey, here and on other reactions I see people recommending Queen songs from Live at the Rainbow 1974-- they're right, great stuff and it was professionally recorded (and I believe remastered) so the sound is great. But no one I've seen has suggested this: Big Spender (audio only) from that show. It's just 1:31 seconds-- you could react to it w/ another song from that show, maybe. At least listen to it-- it opens with absolutely thunderous drums by Roger that are then joined by Brian shredding, and I mean really shredding, his guitar before Freddie starts singing. IMO, it's 1:31 seconds of sheer Queen bliss. Here you go: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYm6ZJapnJuXnbM
