First Recumbent Trike Ride to Pebble Beach, California from Marina on the Monterey Bay Bike Trail!

Joe and I have taken this ride on road bikes and two-wheeled recumbents, but this is the first time we try it on trikes! When the trail ends in Monterey, we hit the streets of Pacific Grove and eventually 17-Mile Drive and Pebble Beach.

Great ride! I would love to see you go up the hill right before 4:44. That's a doozy. You chose wonderful music and hit most of the main turns and sights. Also, the mural that flashed by at 3:56 is one of my favs. It tells the history of Ft Ord from waves and peace, to bullets and war, and back to peace. Thank you so much for doing this video. Hi guys, I ride this route (Catrike Expedition) regularly since I live between Monterey and Salinas. I also work at Pebble Beach, so I get a discount at the the Market. The Reuben sandwich is great. I'm impressed with your weather acumen. I've only had a few days this year that were that fog/cloud-free. OMG, Michael, that is an incredibly generous offer! I wish my golf game wasn't such an embarrassment or I'd take you up on that! I will have to try the Reuben the next time I'm there! We just got lucky on the weather. Most of the time, it's cold and foggy. :) We even dressed for cold weather and for once it was warm! :)

Watched your video for the second time. Enjoyed again! Did you two retired athletic riders ever try the Protein Pucks? "Trike Hobo" Steve proclaimed their value as healthy food. Totally agree. Perfect food for my elder recumbent riding. Also, I like vanilla-flavored Boost drinks.., AT room temperature!

Hey, Gary! Not quite retired yet and I think "athletic" is a stretch. :) Still haven't had a chance to try Protein Pucks, but on our last ride we did fill our water bottles with a concoction that the great bike racer of the 1930's and '40's, Cino Cinelli, swore by as a race winning formula. You fill your water bottle with a quarter cup of sugar, the juice of five lemons, and five espressos! We have a video that should be posting next Saturday showing the results of our performance test while drinking this stuff. Between you and me, I'd stay with the Protein Pucks and Boost! :)

The ride was on a nice and and it was many miles, so...I am curious if you travel with snacks and hydration. Maybe it is my poor vision but I don't see any gear bags or other ways to carry stuff. Maybe you can do a video sometime about how you carry nourishment and supplies on long rides.

HI Bruce and thanks for watching! Yes, we do have bags and water bottles that fit under the seat, so they're tough to see. Depending on the ride, I take either some kind of granola bar or I make a sandwich or stop to eat for the longer rides. :) The "Radical Design" bags are nice, but expensive. What a fabulous ride and video on a perfect day. It couldn’t be more beautiful! This is another ride to add to my expanding bucket list….the list gets longer and the time to do it gets shorter. I better get going. FYI…I had the good luck to play Pebble Beach on Christmas Day 1998 as a simple “walk on” not staying at the lodge… I guess they allowed it back then. Cost me a “mere $250 “ back then and I walked and carried my own bag as there were no caddies available on the holiday. Like everything else today the cost has become beyond absurd.

@@bikestrikesrazors haha! It was Xmas day and my ride and daughter hit the spa and I took a chance and hit on. Nobody there. Walked and played in a little over three hours. A “one and done” off my bucket list. Nice views but was in lousy condition. Greens were awful

Great vid! Subscribed to learn more. Questions ... (1) what happens in a downpour, are there fenders that can protect u from those front 2 wheels kicking up dirt and water to your legs/face? (2) How do u lock the trike? (3) After the downpour, how do u take care of the trike? (traditionally, we wash and stand our bike upside down to drain water), curious what u do with a trike.

Hey, DS! Yes, they do make front fenders for trikes. I never intentionally ride in the rain, so I don't use them, although I have gotten stuck in the rain and wished I did have them! I imagine you could lock a trike with a long cable lock, through the wheels and around the frame, but I personally never leave my trikes or bikes locked up anywhere- A creative thief will be able to steal anything left unattended, even if locked. I don't give them a chance. When caught in the rain, I just dry the trike off as well as I can with paper towels. Some trikes are all aluminum, so the water isn't an issue. The trikes in this video have an aluminum boom and rear section, but the main cross section is steel, so best to make sure that area gets dried well after a soaking. No openings down there, so I don't think there's any way for water to get into those tubes. At least I hope there isn't! Thanks for watching!

Hi Joe! We were using the Osmo action, first generation camera with the built in image stabilization. The only problem we had with this video is we shot so much footage, the camera battery eventually died. :)

Hi Jaci and thanks for watching! That music is called "Saving the World" by Aaron Kenny. Unfortunately, I don't live near this trail. :) I live hundreds of miles north of Monterey and rarely take the ride down there, mainly because the traffic is so bad going home. :)

Are these bicycle roads converted original roadways through the towns?

I believe they were constructed just for bikes and walkers. Part of the video shows roads that were part of the Fort Ord Base, but now closed to motor vehicles. After we pass through the city, it's all regular road until Pebble Beach.

Have there been any incidents between cyclists and the homeless that you're aware of? And what happened during the last chocolate milk ride?

Jim! Not aware of any homeless encounters down there, but there sure are some up in our area. We took a long ride on a really hot day and when we stopped at a Safeway to get something to drink, joe bought us each a half gallon of chocolate milk. We foolishly tried our best to drink it all, but couldn't, so with the remainder of the milk, we filled our water bottles. Bloated with WAY too much milk, we rode another 25 miles swigging hot chocolate milk. :( After that, I never thought I'd touch the stuff again.
