Mike B Injected two strokes have no unburnt gas. That's the whole idea. Direct injected two strokes are cleaner than four strokes.

Dan Henderson Not true. Oil injected/fuel injected 2 strokes will always be heavier in emissions than 4 strokes due to the oil. Any time you see smoke from a tail pipe, unless it's pure white, it will be unburned hydrocarbons. The oil injected or mixed in a 2 stroke never burns completely. If it did, it wouldn't do its job of lubricating the engine. The only way to clean the exhaust of a 2 stroke is with exhaust after treatment. I came from the era of 2 strokes and own a YZ250. I HATE the sound of a 4 stroke dirt bike.

Go to the 2017 YZ 250 showcase video and you're going to see dozens of comments saying; "Durr oh muh god, they haven't updated this bike in 15 years urr muh gerd, it's so old." Then here you have KTM making amazing advancements that will potentially turn more riders on to two strokes, and all people can say is; "Uhhhh er mah god, I miss the old daysss. I can't fix fuel injection. Uhhhh I want a carburetor. Wahhhhhh I want to premix. Wahhhh." Just shut the fuck up.

andrew gates I bet you are a flat earth guy. What really made me mad was when “they” bought/stole the plans for the water burning/powered engine! You can’t really believe what you are saying. If you do, you have almost no ability to think logically or use basic reasoning skills. This is a huge problem with our schools and colleges today and the left loves it like that since most of their ideas don’t stand up to basic reasoning. If these technologies existed and could be made at competitive price relative to their performance and advantages over the products and technology already on the market. Do you think Elon Musk cares about the products and industries his tech is disrupting? Air-BNB, 3-D Printing, Driverless cars, we could go on for a while listing entire industries that will breath their last breath in the next 10 or so years. This isn’t a new thing either, it’s been happening since the beginning of time. The speed of communication and the ability for people to rapidly prototype and produce products with 3D printers relatively easy to learn CAD that can be done on an iPad are making it basically impossible to squash technology. Block chain is a great example. The number of existing industries that would love for it to disappear are almost numberless, what does the banking, finance and similar industries stand to lose? A lot, although I’m sure they will try to find a way to get paid but it’s not looking good IMO. Imagine this; simple to mildly difficult car repair is as easy as wearing a pair of glasses that overlay an image on top of your project (work area, car engine, dishwasher, HVAC unit, whatever you can think of that, at one time required most of us to “Call the guy” to fix and/or install) for example...looking at your engine and an arrow points at the nut/screw/bolt to be removed and with what tool and something like remove screw turn screw counter clockwise. Followed by the next step. It is basically instructions for pretty much anything you can think of...same for home repair, electronics repair, load up plans for building a shed the company that sends you the plans will also arrange delivery of all needed supplies. All you need to do is know how to use the tools and I’m sure there will be Augmented Reality How Programs for that. Long and I wandered around a bit but maybe someone will find it interesting and maybe learn something new.

This innovative new technique is actually used under license. Bombardier was using transfer port injection in the '90s.

Finally, MX two strokes getting with the times. Excellent performance, and a weight difference so slight that professional test riders can't feel the difference. My only hope is that the big four Japanese brands will hop back on the two stroke wagon as well. Yamaha still is but they haven't had any major technical updates for some time.

Snowmobiles have been doing this in some form or another since the early 90's. DI 2 strokes on todays sleds are amazing. Snap everywhere and you can turbo them.

I haven’t been on a dirt bike in 20 years. Last one I rode was a old 1989 Kawasaki 250. That 2 Stroke would rip so hard you could barely hang onto it 😂

we take 2 300 EXC PPI and in the middle a piston charger,so we have a EXC 600 TPI with the lubrication like a 4-stroke because the gas must not go through the crankcase

ShadowOfDeath24 actually in the case of bombardier for example they have a two stage injection system part of which injects into the transfer ports....I was just making the point that this should have happened on dirt bikes long ago, but the manufacturers chose to put all their time and money into 4 strokes. We two stroke guys have been waiting too long...

ShadowOfDeath24 actually direct injection on sleds is a fairly new thing, before 10 years ago all of them were port injected.. my first sled was an 01 arctic cat 600 with port injection so this "Cutting edge" technology is like 20 years old haha

Not that you wouldn't want to extend the range of the bike for enduros (reduce the # of refills), but based on the numbers, maybe there would be a possibility of going with an optional smaller fuel tank to offset the added weight of the electronics and oil tank? If keeping the weight down trumped getting more mileage (endurocross, hare scrambles etc.).

I was just on the KTM website and it says all the 2018 250's have a mikuni carburetor... On each models page it says this... No mention of fuel injection in any two strokes I saw...

Looks great sounds great prob stick with 17 exc another year, question though, KTM dosent hold the patent for this tech TPI, BRP do and KTM licence it as I understand it, so it would be open to others if BRP choose to Licence it to others.. So I it's not they're idea as such? Also Euro5 std is about to drop while it passes Euro4 will it be Euro5 compliant, and Euro6 is 2 years away and it def won't pass that? Might not affect US, won't affect us here as far as I know, but seems a gamble to introduce new tech instead of the full hog and develop a true EFI system that is direct injected not Port injected, DI like outboards are and have been for over 20years! Still the ISDE model looks sic as! I also don't understate this jetting issue with carbs, setup right which is no that hard, unless you are doing massive elevation changes then should be little issues just saying that's more myth and sales pitch than fact, once setup for yr riding area!

So I love 2 strokes, just wish the people in these comments weren't so ignorant. I hardly see how advancement in technology is a bad thing, after all isn't that why you guys were hating so hard on the 2017 Yamaha 125? You guys should love that bike if you like old fashioned, I own one and it's great! The great thing about this though is emissions will become less of an argument, and 2 strokes can be allowed back on the roads with advancements like this. this bike also has better mileage, so you'll have more time in the trails. If you don't know how to fix it, either don't buy it, learn how, or have a professional do it.

so if one runs out of oil, the engine is toast? New technology??? I had a 1972 Suzuki 125 trail bike that had an oil tank to fill. No mixing of fuel. Is that possible to do without fuel injection??

Honestly i welcome this, my snow machine has efi and i've never had to fuck with it so this would be pretty cool. Hell even chainsaws are going this way. Not full efi yet but computer managed carbs. Carbs will be a thing of the past.

Thank good for oil injection. Snowmobiles have been using oil injection since the 80's, 600cc 3cyl 2 strokes making 96hp, lasting 16,000-19,000 miles before rebuilding. WHY has it taken dirt bikes so long to catch up?

Let's read from the KTM release blurb and ride around a rock dump. Boring guys. How about a dyne comparison with torque and hp figures included. Probably would be good also to do a side by side comparison between the last carb version bike to the new efi model. What about a side by side roll on to compare tractability?

No doubt they will. They did say it was just a quick ride at a release event. There'd be lots of industry people there and they'd just get a set time for a quick ride. It's not until they're given a test bike for a week or more they can do that sort of stuff.
