Why a trike? Just because it's fun and I fancied giving one a try, no other reason really, just fun:) It certainly won't replace my other bikes but it's another string to my bow:)

No balance, 70yo limited-mobility handicapper here. Readers/followers be aware that my Hase Lepus delta planform recumbent trikes are STILL rideable. Not so for many, many years on my tadpoles! 25-inch seat height level. Wheelchair/dual forearm crutches here. Recumbent rider for over 30-years here. Not able to get on/off my tadpoles well over a decade now! E-assist and Rohloff gearboxes on my Hase'. Slow-speed shifting, AND.., shifting WHILE stationary! Exercise, sight-seeing scenery, and observing wildlife while I ride (how 95++% of all recumbent "trikers" ride). Recumbent trike "keepers" are expensive! Never outgrow a delta planform trike. Grow oldest, by far, on a delta planform trike! AKA: "Jason Stillwater" in the recumbent world.

I think we're far more affected by what others think when we're younger. I'm in my mid 60's now and couldn't give a stuff what others think about what i wear or my choice in what bikes/motorcycles i ride. Peer pressure has always been a thing, but with the internet and social media now, its probably even worse for younger people now than when i was young. You're spot on with your attitude to life Sandy.

Totally agree with you, Sandy. I don't want to be regretting missed opportunities in my final hours, so, having reached the ripe old age of 68 without ever having motocamped abroad, I'm off to France (Alsace) and Germany (Black Forest) next month. Just hope my Terra Nova tent is still waterproof! 🏍 🙂

i borrowed a two wheeled recumbent tandem years ago, myself and my friend Ben were successful mtb xc racers back then, anyhow, i was steering and he was behind, a real stocky powerful guy he was, and occasionally when the roads got tricky he'd start to sprint on the pedals and laugh as i struggled to keep control 🤣, great times. your honest chat about getting older and doing what you want really struck a cord with me, God bless you Sandy

Well Sandy, illness taught me a valuable lesson about what people think of us. Having a plastic bag of pee attached to my tummy taught me not to give a stuff. Both a nurse and a friend pointed out to me at different times that my bag was showing, I simply turned around and thanked them and said Im fine with it but if others aren’t that’s their problem not mine. As far as Im concerned it’s my medal of honour because I bet illness, not that I flaunt it of course but it can’t be hidden in a swimming pool. Definitely don’t let others opinions stop you doing anything. As for opinionsI tell my wife she has two of them, mine and one of her own 😂

I think trikes and cargo bikes could replace many cars if that day ever came. I agree with the comfort of the trike, especially long distances. A mobile outdoor recliner that moves with your own power. Doing a lot of different things makes for a very intelligent man, or woman.

A very interesting video and sorry you couldn't locate his grave, but maybe you could find a local historian to help you find his grave ? Wonderful you were out on the trike great to see you enjoying it. Regardless of what bikes we ride there is sooner or later you are bound to come across some motorised clown making wise cracks and these are the ignoramuses we have to put up with, but be quick to note an idiots vehicle registration number. In the future you might consider perhaps having a lower gear because you don't want to be pushing it up the steep hills with traffic behind you ? As I said before Sandy, you're a long time dead, so take the bull by the horns, make every day you can count. As I was on yhe way out 9 years ago, I was on my own...that was the only anxious part, no regrets, I just closed my eyes and thought about my fondest memories and concentrated on them...made things much easier I recon. The thing to do is to take chances, slide into yhe next dimension on your socks asking "What's next"? We are only remembered for 2 generations, a vague memory for 3 if we're lucky. Record those memories for future generations and who knows, maybe long after we're gone, someone somewhere will get an idea of those experiences you have saved. Good to see you out on the trike...at one point I thought you were going to make a brew while riding along 😂 You did look comfy 👍

Hi Sandy and greetings from County Durham. I would like to tell you about a member of my motorcycle club, Durham and District MCC aka Durham Panthers. Ian Copinger was a long time and well-loved member, who, after retiring from the police force, became involved with bee keeping, and was some kind of official registrar of hives in the North East. He was also quite an expert on the subject and had a book published, 'Words of Wisdom, a Collection of Apicultural Essays'. A really nice gentleman, Ian sadly died a couple of years ago. I have been interested in recumberant trikes sometime. Ridng my bicyles in traffic I prefer to ride on the bike-ways and approved shared footpaths choosing to keep away from traffic if I can? It worries me that trikes are wider, lower. People not seeing you, I like the rabbit reference. I say "They pull out on trains"? No with all that one must look after our self and be safe as possible. @@WiltshireMan I just wish people would try pedaling platform pedals. I remove all nylon straps, as the tall heel cup prevents feet getting under Tadpole frame. Also, no one seems aware that feet/legs cannot get endangered falling off a pedal ON a Delta planform trike! BTW: I have early on (decades ago) had foot/leg under tadpole frame twice. NO frame in the way to hurt rider's feet and legs on a delta Planform trike! Better/best in my opinion/experience to pedal recumbents through your heels and arches, not ball (toe knuckles) of the feet, as on an upright bicycle. Seems superior to me!

Really well put. I had a rough upbringing and suffered badly with nerves all through my teens, 20s and 30s; at its worst I could barely turn my neck without the bones creaking together with how constricted my muscles were and panic attacks were a daily occurrence. Leaving the house was a massive ordeal. Everything was. But I've looked at myself clear-mindedly and had therapies and probably turned cartwheels inside my flesh because I was so confused and disconnected. Now I'm pushing 50 and finally got a bit of life, all the bad stuff is behind me, and it depresses me all over again when people do absolutely nothing with their lives but sit on the sidelines judging others who go by, and never once put their life on the line for anything. It's always someone else's fault why their lives are terrible. I used to let those voices hold me back and never did anything through fear, but I never joined them. I just strove on my own terms to do what felt right, and if it meant looking a wally from time to time and being ridiculed, I did it anyway. More people should try the same.

My saying is "I don't want to be surrounded by the ghosts of regret on my death bed". What I enjoy about your channel, are the areas you depict. I was born in Carterton, so it's a bit nostalgic watching you travel through places I know well, but haven't seen for over 20 years. I know things change, but I can still see familiar sites. Not great on hills Bry but actually rather comfortable, I think it will be something I ride when I just want a slow ride and plan for a smooth surface, having said that it is still comfortable even on rougher terrain but you just have to go a bit slower. @@WiltshireMan Trikes are slower than bikes. Tip: Better comfort; Try heel cup platform pedals. Clipless pedals for upright bicycles not best for many riders on recumbent trikes! Heel cup pedals do not need nylon strapping. Straps can be taken off of heel cup pedals. Heel cup keeps feet safe.

I've had the problem of finding specific graves myself, and with Mr. Manley's burial being so recent, (I hunt down the graves of long dead Confederate Soldiers), there should still be family members alive who can point you in the right direction. Also, now that you've narrowed it down to a specific Church yard, perhaps the Church has a Sexton or at least an indexed plot of the graves in the cemetery. Go by on a Sunday, attend service, and talk to the Vicar. I'm sure he'll be able to help you in your search. I look forward to more adventures with the recumbent bike!

Regarding risk, I think that has to be measured as if you have family/loved ones it’s also there risk, if you take the risk and something happens they are the ones that have to live with it. Sandy, Wow, this was a bit heavy. You are a very articulate guy. I think first and foremost people are just concerned for your safety. Make sure you get several really good rear lights to attach to your trike and have them on all the time when on the roads, constant rear light and flashing. I would suggest a dynamo hub in one wheel such as a Shutter Precision SP-8 and some Supernov E3 Pro dynamo lights which are very bright and once fitted you never ever have to worry about lighting ever again. I have this set up on my Brompton and two other of my bikes. I used to be sceptical of bike hub dynamos but they are so good now it's a bit of a no brainer not to have them unless you are say racing where every gramme of weight counts. Shame you didn't find Rob Manley's grave. Good to see Dickie again. Also you didn't actually show much of your trike in this video. A walk around video with it just being the star would be great. Holland would be a great place to ride it. Anyway enjoy getting to know it. I would actually quite like a go in one but whether I would use it more frequently in preference to riding my conventional 2 wheeled bikes on the roads, I don't know. Probably not as there are so many impatient dangerous a-holes in cars, vans, coaches, trucks etc with phones glued to their ears or typing away on social media in the driver's door pocket as they drive. It's bad enough on a motorcycle or conventional bicycle avoiding ending up being hit by these morons. I've been knocked down and injured 4 times cycling on the roads by dangerous a-holes. Then there's all the abuse you get and close punishment passes. I think the key is to choose your routes and time of day you ride your trike carefully. Safe triking. ATB.

Thansk Alex, I find with me I shall probably ride the trike a lot over the next few days but then some form of balance will set in and I'll choose the right bike for the planned ride. If I want a slow relaxing ride on smoot surfaces then it's trike all the way, if I want to cover some serious miles on mixed terrain probably the Gravel bike, and anything off road I'd take the Bootzipper:)

Good for you Sandy, do what you want as long as it doesn't harm others. As my balance isn't what it was I may end up with a Trike. I've only been put off by the things you mention. Narrow trails, kissing gates would be a problem but other people seem to make long off-road journeys on them. Chap i know has one and as he got older he found hills were a challenge so he fitted an electric assist to it and now he's able to cycle many more years.

Living on the edge with that trike old buddy. I did a stint of 6 months riding a mountain bike in the city once, 30 miles per day, six days per week out of necessity. Almost got whacked out several times. I think I would put about 4 bright day-glo orange flags up and maybe even a flashing tail lamp for motorists to see. Anyway, you're looking healthy, hope everyone is well.

Mr ROB MANLEY done some research contacted St Peters and St Paul's Church at Hanborough spoke to reverend Stuart he checked the records and has told me there is know one by the name of MANLEY unfortunately.

I chose to try and ride a Electric Unicycle much to the disapproval from family members. I am 78 years old and cant get used to being old. I fell off and broke my left hip. Bugger. My bones are not as strong as I would like. So the end point is that some goals are just a bridge too far. How ever I will focus on sea kayaking and other pursuits that I enjoy. I do admire your positive attitude to life and enjoy your vids very much. I lived in Yorkshire for a few years and Now reside in Auckland NZ. The main difference between the two countries are that NZ seems like its only 2 minutes old so seeing your vids of the land and the amazing old buildings is such a joy, much appreciated. Hi Sandy. My husband Graham and I really enjoy your videos. I'm a keen amateur family historian and I was intruiged to learn that you were unable to find the grave of Robert Orlando Beater Manley on this trip. It got the genie (genealogost ha ha) in me thinking, so I reasearched him on Ancestry and have found a photograph of his mother's grave at Long Hanborough. You mentioned that he was buried with his mother, so I thought you might be interested to see it, in case you make another trip out there and want to try to find it again. It is quite distinctive, against a wall by the look of it and has a three-tier white marble plinth with a bird with outstretched wings on top, and a white marble border around the whole grave. Looks like there is more than one person in the grave, so possibly her husband and her son? Robert Manley married a lady named Amy Lillian Stevenson who died in March 1980, having lived at Summertown, Oxfordshire. I have not been able to discover where she is buried. I hope this information might be of some help/interest to you. I'd send you a copy of the grave photo, but not sure how to do that here and don't have any other contact info for you. Hi Elaine, thats very interesting. I did check Christ church Long hanborough for his grave but perhaps could have spent longer there. Is there another cemetery in Long Hanborough? The info I got was that he was buried in Church Hanborough which is a mile or so away. On my KZbin home page you should be able to see an email address but I can't put it in this comment because for some reason KZbin blocks them!

Hello Sandy, Mr. Nickols was an old bee keeper whom I worked for while in my final year of high school. Bees proved to be very interesting ,. They, like people, have temperaments . Some calm and peaceful , some aggressive. Mr. Nickols bees were like the old man. Mild temperament. Once while expanding his business he got some wild bees from the forest and placed them in an alfalfa field as pollinators. The bees were so aggressive they would not let the farmer in the field to move his irrigation lines. Lesson learned, and a good story to pass on to me. Great old man, he was.

Hi Bob, bees can become temperamental at times, suddenly when a honey flow ceases or when foraging on certain crops (oil seed rape) they would turn savage, but mostly the bees were gentle especially the Italian strains, infact so much so that on a warm day I would sometimes forgo wearing gloves

@@WiltshireMan My favorite honey was the spring honey when the bees were working the various blossoms of fruit trees. The honey was light and clear in color with nice flavor. The summer honey was from alfalfa blooms and was darker and stronger tasting. Still good. ( I'm thinking Few folks have been treated to raw honey .) In the extractor room there were time that gloves were optional. I was taught not to swat at his gentle strain of bees. It was a partnership. Us and the bees.
