This week's video features Aiden, a 4y/o Haflinger who was sent to me to be started under saddle. Aiden is a very smart but reactive horse, so I decided to take him out in the world to keep him challenged and interested in his work.
The video shows a completely unedited first ride out after 16 days under saddle.
I love training horses, and starting horses under saddle "colt starting" has been one of my favourite activities. I try to set the young horse up for a long and happy career as a ridden horse by establishing some foundations that they can carry with them through their life. I am very proud of this boy and his zest for life. 🥰

Do you have a video on what you spoke about on tips on helping a reactive horse deal with their emotions?

I don’t actually have one that I have done yet sorry. I’m not sure one video would cover it. It would be a few videos put together.

My favorite video of yours. Fascinating to watch his horse brain working things out. He did so well for a newbie in a new environment.

Thank you so much for just saying that you don’t know what happened with the other trainer and that they did excellent groundwork. I am starting my mustang. First time I am starting a horse. Each step takes me much longer than you do. I only walk ride her 1 month. Then I Trotted with her. Still no canter because we need to practice transition between Trott and walk. And we moved today to a place with good footing in the arena. On the other side, I ride with her outside the arena. So bottom line, sometimes it is better to take things slow and not being pressured by the internet where most everyone just shows a perfect picture. Thanks for your videos and your honesty. ❤

You need to take as long as it takes for you and your horse to be comfortable. Nothing is written in stone. Best of luck with your girl. She is lucky to have you 🥰

Absolutely loooove the way you train and treat your horses Josie. Lol.. I can't believe that your helper came off 😂. So funny..not being mean but kinda ironic. You always seem to help horses that others aren't able to. You're so kind and patient and you give the horses confidence and the ability to learn and self calm 👏👏👏❤🐴

Great video thankyou Josie! He's just gorgeous & you provided a fabulous lesson in containing his energy & curiosity. You have such a relaxed & consistent approach, it obviously transferred beautifully to Aiden. I notice you ended up in a bit, did something change your initial plan to proceed in the halter? I didnt hear you refer to going into the bridle, from the halter?? Regardless, i very much enjoyed this - thankyou. We actually missed Michelle's dismount, but glad she was ok & unhurt!! 🐎❤️🙏

The intro for this video was filmed the day after the ride out sorry for the confusion. I have ridden him since that day in a halter and now I have a bitless bridle on him.

Great video! Thx. I was very interested in your mention of emotional regulation and this lovely horse. I have worked with my 7 year old Arab in this. She is really good in the ring but have difficulty with the transfer to the trail. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

😬 I started shaking with fear when you started out in the open, lol! (Just have seen so many recks from where you started). Lucky for Aiden, you reacted perfectly to prevent potential mishaps. It didn't take him long to understand what was expected of him.

You started the video with Aiden in a halter, but when you got on him in the field, he had a bit in his mouth. I would have liked to see the halter ride. How did that go?

That was great...fantastic riding when he took off! I was thinking you were going to ride him in just the halter? I may have missed something about him having a bit for that ride. At least I thought I could see a bit in his mouth. He didn't seem that happy with it but he did so well anyway. I guess like you said, once he has his teeth done he may be a lot better?

I'm curious why you needed another horse there. You seemed to do well on your own. My horse goes out in two weeks to a trainer and ONE reason I chose her is she hacks young horses out alone all the time. I always ended up hacking alone it seems. For me, my young horse must be comfortable with that.
