So I work with his aunt. And the stories about this guy. He was truly the best of the best. Her and I chat from time to time with me being prior military and going to Afghanistan myself. And I am just aw struck by this man. What he did when he was home for his family and then his SEAL family. He is truly an American hero. And Marcus is here because of him. I am also reminded of the pacifist who refused to carry gun in the army but who then carried ten men to safety, one each time, on his back as he crossed into enemy lines each time, to pick them up!!! At any of those ten times he could have been killed but he did what he swore to his faith, to be willing to lay one's life for another. When I was little me, my dad and my sisters would do hero workouts to honor people who have fallen. My dad was in the Army as an 82nd Airborne and he lost a few buddies. So it really means something to him when we workout along with him. Murph may suck as a workout, but the remembrance allows us to get through it. This was an insane story that shows the true fight and sheer will and determination people like this have. They sent in an initial QRF but one of the two helicopters was hit by an RPG leaving no survivors on board. Marcus Luttrell, the only surviving member of the SEAL team, was taken in by a local village who also hated the Taliban and defended him until his rescue

This story has been distorted. There were no hundreds of Taliban storming their position, there were 12-14 anti coalition militia, the guy leading the militant attack was killed in 2008 in a shootout with the KPK Police in Pakistan. They were discovered not because of the goat herders, but because the militants found their fast rope, and a militant scout spotted them. SEALs had no idea they were already being stalked when they decided to let go of the goat herders and move up the mountain, that is why the ambush was perfect, since they were being observed beforehand. The whole firefight lasted around 30 minutes. One of the militants gave an interview describing all of it, the interview was shot 2 days after the attack, you can still find it on the internet somewhere. He was speaking in Pashto hence I understood every word of it. The SEALs were ambushed by 12-14 guys and attacked from 3 sides, caught in an impossible-to-survive situation and nowhere to fall back to, no solid cover and steep fall off to their back. I knew it wasn't 40-50 like it was depicted in Lone Survivor, I just didn't know it was that small of a group. The story is still a wild one where there shouldn't have been survivors on the SEAL team.
