I have been wild camping since 1979, here are a few things that might help. Take a small radio with you it helps cancel out stupid noises in the night which are nearly always small animals. Make the tent space yours you will feel more comfortable in a space that you feel is homely and yours. Expect to hear people in the night, it always amazes me how many people are walking around in the middle of the woods at night usually with a dog but not always. Let someone know where you are going for safety reasons and when you expect to be back. Eat good food, nothing makes you feel better than a really nice meal. Finally set off with a good thought about it all that will carry you through the night. Good story loved all of it.

Hello! All really good tips thank you for sharing them 😊 I’ve never heard anyone at night yet, but I also haven’t tried camping in woods yet 😄 I’m quite nervous of that because of the noises! Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed it 😊✨

Have only just found this and wanted to add a 'bravo'. I'm a mum in my 50s and it's taken me 30 years to get out solo wild camping and rediscover that quiet wild part of myself, nervous as it makes me. So I take my hat off to you - may you have many more good experiences out in nature. The filming is also beautiful.

@@BrookAurora I have sufford from PTSD and developed Agroaphobia. This was awful as I was training for an Ironman at the time and cycling or running into the countryside scared me. I faced my fears eventually and overcame it now training for my 2nd Ironman 70.3. The biggest fears we have mostly come from our own minds. We as people have the power to overcome this and nothing is normally as bad as what we think it would be. Well done on your inner strength

I love your work with the camera - it stands out from the hundreds of similar videos - and your voice over at the start is a lovely touch. And I’m thrilled you’ve done the solo wild camp- it’s a quiet revolution, a groundswell of people having a more intimate relationship with the land that we belong to. I’ve just come back today from only my second wild camp out in Northumberland. I jumped in with both feet and went for two nights and found I could relax like you. Your openness is so easy to connect with and quite disarming. Isn’t it funny how we are stronger and closer by sharing about our fears and our little triumphs overcoming them. Thank you 🙏

Thank you, really lovely to hear 😊 It is wonderful to be solitary in the wild, completely different from being there with others. And like you say, it feels like you can connect to where you are more 😊🌿 Wow that is jumping in the deep end, it must feel good to have gone for two nights though! I’m working my way up to that 😄 Yes I agree, being open and honest is far easier to relate too, though it can be scary to be honest at times. Especially online! But thank you for your lovely comment and I hope you get to enjoy more solo camps soon 😊🌞🌿✨

Wonderful! I can sympathise. Did my first solo stealth camp recently. Was so worried about being spotted that I stayed too long in the pub and had to put up the tent in pitch dark. Was immediately spooked by a pair of bright red eyes coming out of the dark, just a friendly dog and human so all good.

I have just watched another a few days ago (no pot noodle). Again excellent vid. Gifted. I did a wild beach camp in bedroll this week. I still have a low level anxiety, even after years of camping, it's much less in a tent though as I guess I feel more secure. Please keep making vids, they are so calming and inspiring. Well done again. X

@@andyvint8066 Haha I feel the pot noodle (or lack of) may become a bit of a theme 😂 Thank you again 😊 I know what you mean about feeling more secure, but I also like the feeling of being less conspicuous in something like a bivvy. Lovely lovely film. I’ve been wild camping for 20 years and remember that feeling of nervousness. It quickly disappears though. Some of best things I’ve seen have been wild camping which I’ll remember to the end of my days. I think we need to make the most of the time that we have. Keep going with it! I’m addicted to it now, normally tarp camping and have just got back from the Tour du Mont Blanc. Definitely recommend that one!

Well done and very nice video, one thing which I find very comforting is being off the beaten track, away from marked footpaths, summits, distinctive features etc. and I found making sure I was a very confident navigator helped with that, and just being confident about my mountain skills in general really, but you look and sound like an experienced and able camper anyway, also one addition I made to my first aid kit which I find extremely useful is earplugs, great for nights when the wind really picks up!

great vid, I think woodland camps can be more 'alarming' due to the activity at night where even a tiny mouse can sound like a 20 stone ogre at 3am. Even after all the years I've solo camped I've never lost the slight butterflies at a new odd noise or fleeting shape in the woods and I'm glad as that is what makes it exciting.

I loved watching this, and though you might still be nervous at times, you've stepped out; overcome your fears and you've become the master of your fears rather than let your fears master you. Your approach to the venture was pretty well perfect. You kept everything simple! By doing this, though you might not have realised, you gave yourself little by way of excuses to not go. You're absolutely right that there is little chance of anybody finding you, bearing in mind that nobody is up there looking for you. There's also almost zero chance of you coming across anybody once you're settled into your bivi for the night. Absolutely loved this video. I'm looking forward to seeing more, to join you on your journey, to watch you in your growth. Thank you.

@BrookAurora That's what mastering the fears is 🙂 The fear might remain but that fear doesn't shackle you; doesn't stop you. You know that fear you have isn't a rational fear, and so, you don't let it master you. That's what mastering the fear means. We still need to have fear in our lives, and in some situations we might need to listen to it, but that fear will take over if we allow it. Thanks for taking the time to reply. That's very much appreciated. All the best to you.

That does sound quite scary! I guess in the UK we don’t have to worry about wild animals when camping and we also don’t have such huge expanses of wild! But once the first one is out of the way it doesn’t feel quite so daunting 😊 and it’s such a wonderful experience waking up alone and in silence on the mountains 🥰🌞 hope you get to do it soon!

Brilliant, well done! It took me about five years to finally camp alone in the wild and without permission. I'd bought the kit and just like you, made several excuses not to go. I was hooked after the first one and still get that buzz when I've been. I'll try a bivi camp sometime, a perfect idea for a stealthy night. You have a new subscriber, looking forward to more 🙂

I live in Canada, and am incredibly fortunate to be able to pretty well walk out into any forest or mountain area and set up camp for the night without worry about it being illegal. This is the first video of yours that I have watched, and one of the reasons is because I have visited the Lake District in Northern England a few times and have always wanted to wander out into the hills and just camp overnight. Not sure what part of Britain you are in, but it sure is beautiful! Your video work is excellent! You have a good eye for it. I've never used a bivy, but I have done a lot of tarp camping. Never really liked tents. I enjoy your approach to it all, that it's not really about distance or accomplishment, but just about being out there in natural surroundings. It's a soul requirement!

Oh wow that sounds like a dream! Canada is somewhere I’d love to visit, such a beautiful country! The Lake District is an incredible part of the UK, although wild camping isn’t really allowed, I think people get away with it as long as their discrete. So you probably could wander into the hills and camp 😊 I am from Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Thank you, really pleased to hear 😊 I am definitely more of a fan of the bivvy than a tent now, tarp camping is also something I’d like to try though! Yes that’s exactly what I’m trying to put across! There is so much beauty in the wild where ever you look, I just love the journey, it doesn’t matter how far I get or where I end up 🌞✨🌿

Great video, I’m looking to try this with my dog. I live in Kent unfortunately there are not a lot of really remote areas compared to some, so setting up an actual tent discreetly is a lot more difficult. So I’m looking into starting with a bivvy which is far more discreet. Can I ask what type of bivvy bag you are using. Cheers

At the risk of sounding patronising. I started camping out solo when I was 9yrs old and am now 54 the first few times I was waking up at every sound but I learned to look around at your surroundings as it gets dark and pick out shades that when it’s dark would scar you and try to remember what they were when it was light. You get used to animal noises as you learn what they are, the screech owl was my scariest noise. Great video beautiful scenery. Thanks think I’ll subscribe. 🤗👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Wow 9 years old! That is a young age to start 😄 thanks for the tip, that is very helpful and funny because I was actually staring at a dark patch of land on the last camp I did, wondering if it had been their the whole night or not 😄 so looking out for them before it gets dark is a very good idea! Thank you! 😊✨🌞

@@BrookAurora hi. Thanks for talking to me. Yes I took my kids camping this weekend for 3 nights in the woods. Well I say kids my daughter is 23 but full of anxiety and very anxious about everything she just at home all the time which is a big worry for me. My so is 15 and completely different. But I’ve taught them to look around all the time as it gets dark, things always look different in the dark I also tell them to not use the touch to much as it plays tricks with your mind. Just let your eyes adjust naturally to the change in light. Yes I started young because I had parents who didn’t care to much.

@@ed7540 of course! It does sometimes take me a while but I try and reply to everyone’s comments, I appreciate the time people like you take to write them, so I try to do the same 😊 it seems like you’re teaching your kids well and I’m sure they’ll appreciate it as they get older! I definitely appreciate my parents doing the same sort of things with me 😁 hopefully the more time your daughter spends outside the less anxious she will feel, the wild can do magic like that! ✨ I’m sorry to hear that 🙁 but it sounds like your making up for it with your children 😊🌿🌞

Here's just some absolute truth from me. I've had literally spent hundreds of nights in wild places camping through my journey in bushcraft. I have seen the hardest of men openly admit they are scared of certain places to camp alone. I have been many places where I myself have thought holy shit this is dodgy as😂. They make the most interesting camps sometimes I think. I loved that you nailed the first one and I could see inside your eyes you were buzzing if a little tired. Here's a tip that I do every times i go to bed, my knife goes in my pocket and my headtorch I wrap around my wrist. Now I have light when I need it and I know where it is and my knife just gives me that little bit of security against the wild big cats that I'm scared might roam the u.k 😂😂😂 All the best !

It’s comforting to know that others find it scary too, although I don’t wish anyone else to feel scared! I guess it’s quite a natural feeling, being out and quite vulnerable in a way. What kind of dodgy places have you found? Yes I was so happy to have finally done what I’d wanted to do for years! 😁 Thank you for the tip, I had my knife ready but the torch is definitely a good idea! I’m hoping I never run into a big wild cat 😂😂

Camping near an old colliery that had a huge disaster was a weird one for sure. That kept me up a while, I camped in a lime kil ln right next to a grave yard. That was scary 😂, on my last video we stayed in the forest of Dean and at 4am a roe buck deer sneaked in behind and started screaming. Check that the hell out, there is nothing out there to harm us but our own imaginations. Unfortunately "People" are the scariest thing there is. Unless you are in America because bears are pretty fucking scary

I have just watched your video and would like to congratulate you on your first solo overnight camp. It seems a shame that I see so many videos of solo campers that feel threatened in some way. Here in New Zealand we don’t really have such an issue ( well not that I have heard) and it upsets me to hear people can’t go out and enjoy nature without the underlying thought of something or someone turning what should be a wonderful experience into a nightmare. Again good on you for being brave enough to do it on your own and hope you can overcome your fear and get out and do it more often.
