so true i also have long hair and whatever i build, i have to put my hair in a tight roll & every time when i use power tools i do it also because its can hurt a lot & its can pull all the skins and flesh to the bones or do more damage & when i drive i wear proper protection hood so the hair gets under coveralls or jacket & always if you use lathe-drill bench or what ever power tools don't wear a long sleeved shirt or jewelry or a watch because they are the most common reasons that someone has had a bad accident

I love how much of a unique engineering adventure this ended up being. I mean, on one hand it sucks to have had to replace *so* much of the original go-kart, but in doing so, you've learned a ton about them, _and_ had the opportunity to improve the thing way beyond the original.

This brings back memories! I used to drive racing go karts in the '60s. Most were powered by McCulloch chain saw 2 stroke engines with direct drive. They'd do around 60 mph. Some owners had exotic Italian engines that were faster when they could keep them running. Have a blast with this, Sara. Karting is so much fun!!

Tip from a pro fabricator. When you are trying to locate positions for holes for a threaded portion like your rivnuts and you are having troubles. Take a bolt that threads into the rivnut or whatever you are trying to find a hole for. Cut the head off and sharpen the top of the what is now just a threaded rod and sharpen it to a sharp point/tip. Thread those into your pieces, mount your seat, grab a hammer and hit where you think the pointy bolts are. They will create a center punch into the seat. Remove seat, drill holes. Works perfectly every time. I use this method all the time when trying to find blind holes. Once your done, remove the pointy studs and save them for the next project. I have a few that I keep on hand. Also a drill and a sanding disk works great for sharpening them. Same method I use for sharpening my tungsten for the TIG. Hope this helps.

Solutions for your problem with steering wheel coming loose. 1) Milling 2 pieces of round material that fit on each side of the bracket(red) that is used to hold the steering wheel. Then add 4 washers, 2 at the top and 2 at the bottom. If you use brass it would prevent any squeaky noises. 2) The nut that you tighten 12:40 could be welded to a milled piece of round rod. This rod should be long enough to protrude out the bracket where the bearing sits. A bolt head could be welded on to the rod. The head should of cause be large enoug that it could not be pull through the bracket(blue).

There is a groove in the housing that holds the steering bearing in . It is for the snap ring that will hold the bearing in place.

I really like the way you get details just the way you want them. I would like to chime in on the meaning of the word "faster"! You're accurate in saying "faster accelerating to the limit speed." From my racing experience (mostly armature) - motorcycles (AMA licensed) and cars (SCCA licensed) both, I want to add - Faster Lap Times! If you have a go-kart road circuit nearby, I'm sure the work you did on it will (would - 1-year-old video) give you faster lap speeds (lower times). Cheers, TG.

FYI if ever you mess with fiberglass and get itchy use a 3M lint roller the (sticky tape kind )and roll it all over your skin. It pulls all the fibers out with ease. It was a life saver when I was replacing my floor in my boat.

Sarah, go stand in front of the cart and look at the sideways angle of the steering axle. You need a heim/rose joint as the lower bearing. Any other axial bearing will bind.

You could do a setscrew to hold the steering bearing in similar to the one on your seat mount. Drill a shallow hole in the bearing that the setscrew will lock into.
