when a non understandable trouble occurs on a point style ignition system, the first and second thing to visit are the condenser and the points. it happened to me that a brand new condenser failed after only 15 minutes of service.

I’ve been following your channel for a longtime and while I do enjoy it, I would like to see more of the work you do on a car rather than just hear you talk about what you’ve done after the you’ve done. Time lapse work is fun to watch and even footage of you making a mess of your garage floor and cleaning it up would be entertaining. Just a couple thoughts, I’ll still follow the channel, regardless.

Hi there. Slushy would be appropriate for a name imo, good job getting her running too. As i mentioned in my last comment the ignition system is key to running properly, being a point type system you really need to check dwell settings. Ive collected over the years several dwell meters at tag sales, and when working on my vairs with point ignitions I ALWAYS use 2 dwell meters just to confirm settings are correct. No apology needed for not having the key on, we all forget a step or make a mistake but you caught it, and I admire your admitting the mistake. I cant tell you how many times, while trying to resurrect a Corvair engine Ive been out of gas, wire disconnected, being distracted somehow, or whatever silliness we deal with at times and found myself really frustrated. BUT YOU FIGURED IT OUT! And thats what really matters.... Sometimes taking a coffee break to clear your mind helps to get you back on track.. Whoo Whoo noise sounds like the blower bearing, and that can be re greased as opposed to replacing it ..Clarks ?? yeah we Corvair folks are kind of at their mercy, unless youre smart enuf to rebuild your own stuff or have more affordable parts sources, after all its a chevy, and shares some of the same mechanicals as chevy 2 nova and other GM cars. Ive had pretty good luck with aftermarket parts and suppliers, for instance the voltage regulator youll need to replace. As a long term Corvair owner, Id recommend BEFORE that test drive you purchase ( and I NEVER EVER leave home without this " kit ") a FIRE ESTINGUISHER with a discharge rate longer than just a few seconds ( its printed on the estinguisher) ,spare fan belt and fuel pump, put together a small toolbox, get familiar with the funky tire pressure deal ( soft front, hard rear) and flush out your brake system..While the car may run and drive, it also needs to stop, and Im sure your wife and family values your life, so safety first!

Good suggestion for the name! Since this video a lot has changed, make sure to check out some of the later videos on the fuel injection system...it eliminated so much that caused reliability issues on older cars. And I always keep a fire extinguisher in older cars!

Good news for that bearing noise is the front bearing on the alternator is cake to change and under $10. (back bearings seldom go bad but need lube) If it's the blower bearing then a bit more (recalling under $40) and it needs to be heat shrunk into the top engine casing. Not a difficult job once the engine metal is removed, but you do need to measure the installed height so you know how far to put it back in. Last but not least is something I just found out.... the trans oil needs to be GL-4 only. Do NOT use GL-5 oil. The research I did shows the GL-5 doesn't play well with yellow metals. (bronze / brass) That means premature wear on internal shims and syncro rings. You need to change that oil again anyway so search it out. I finally found some on Amazon but forgot the brand. (black 1 gallon container) If it's a 4 speed it will hold just over 3.5 quarts.

You said you thought this was a flood car . It's been my experience condensers don't like moisture. Just store any engine in a damp environment for a long period of time and you can expect problems with the condenser. As you said a condenser is relatively inexpensive. Nice car differently worth repairing. I think Chevy got most of the problems fixed in the second generation. But Ralph Nader had done his dirty work and got famous in the process.

It's funny how the simple things can make a huge difference. I found out the hard way. My '58 Chevy wouldn't run over 25 MPH. I thought that the fuel pump was the cause. I fought that lousy pump's push rod for an hour. Well, the actual cause was a fuel filter, costing ~ $2.00. Fifteen min's later, back on the road. UGH!

80,000 miles back then, well, it's kind of up there for a 6 cylinder. Gotta remember, 4 cyl cars = 40,000 miles, 6 cyl= 60,000, 8 cyl= 80,000 miles then they needed rings/ valve jobs. That's what I remember hearing back then . Just my opinion mind you. I do remember cars needing this type of work done at those intervals.... I can't wait to see more on the Corvair.

Be very careful with the brakes on this car. There is a crossover brake line that runs across the front brakes, located above the fuel tank. If the tank is that rusty, the line is probably rusty as well. Not that hard to replace with the tank out, but it can blow out while you're driving, and SURPRISE! no brakes.

I did check it out and it looked solid, but always a good idea to look. Thanks!

You got quite a project there. I wouldn’t have bothered with that car, there are many of examples in much better shape. I have a 1965 500 with 15,000 miles that runs like new. However I had to replace all the brake lines, wheel cylinders and master cylinder due to age. My car also needed new weather strips, again age deteriorated. Have fun!
