Keep the meeting light, informative, not for you to talk about your 90-day transformation vision! 1. Build trust - show that you are humble, willing to accept help and learn 2. Icebreaker - cheesy but useful to gather information, find the leader of the pack 3. Share - share your experience, where your ideas come from, your hobbies, let them see you as human, be in the spirit of learning 4. Ask questions - what should be left alone, what really needs to change here, what is the best/ worst thing about working here? Take notes, listen actively 5. Thank them - Thanks for hearing me out, thanks for having this chat 6. Closing note - _What I intend to do is to have one-on-one talks with each and everyone of you in the coming weeks and I am hopeful we can get some insights as to how we operate, where we have issues or gaps, and what I can do to help you succeed._ Do not say "my door is always open".

Thanks for making your videos! I have too long of a story to post here but was the volunteer coordinator for a festival that ended amazingly well with over 15,000 attendees but a month before the fest, our volunteer committee was undermined severely by past volunteers. I am now working on a PhD in Human Resources and told to narrow down my dissertation topic. I wish I had started this journey before the festival and discovered you sooner, I would have had some amazing skills, thanks to your videos, to deal with the corruption and undermining of the team. I want to study how great leaders have a team that are eager to be part of their organization and the failure of bosses... or managers... or something that have such poor leadership skills, they ultimately cost the company in high turnover rates, retraining, and loss of profits. You are the "textbook" I can watch instead of read. Thank you for all you do!

It doesn't work with all people, I've taken on a team of people who need Authority, they thirst for it, and I knew this going in. So I took a different approach, I wasn't humble at all .... in fact, I took on my military attitude, and that worked! ... now I can be more humble!
@smithwez1101

what industry is this because, first I'm curious and 2nd the militaristic way really doesn't work except in the military and even then it is short gained, IMO. Your post is 2 years old now so I'm even more curious as too whether your personal philosophy has changed.

The very first team meeting in my last job was awkward. My supervisor said "if I can take a non-supervisory position, I would." That was not only a big red flag, but it was very uninspiring. Who wants to be under a boss like that? This was also the same boss who called me for an intro meeting and gave her part of the intro. Then suddenly had a meeting and promised to call me back for my part of the intro and she never did. She never did share her expections or vision. Fast forward 6 months, I accepted a promotion opportunity with another company.

Video is good, but needs to emphasize that being too friendly as a boss is NOT good! Your employees will see you as their equal and may lose respect. Be firm but fair from DAY ONE! It's better to keep your social life a little mysterious too.

Getting the respect of your team simply comes from showing respect and being human. Referring to yourself as anyone's "boss" and believing you're above your team is toxic leadership. You should actually view them as if they're above you - good leaders work for their team and not the other way around. You need them more than they need you, especially as a new hire.

I think he means, when starting out as a new leader, taking your inititiave and putting it into play, you were hired as they believed in you. Don't refer back to your peer to check if this very small change is alright to do so, change it. If it's asking to hire 20x people or something that requires sign off, then yes perhaps you might need to. But you are a leader because of your, initiave, your thought process and the fact you can say no and yes at the right times. Don't rely on someone else to make your decisions as... you're a leader, right? Or wrong?
