1. You're a manager, not a friend - draw a professional boundary (especially for internal promotions) 2. Be consistent in dealing with employees - consistent rewards and reprimands 3.The buck stops at your desk - you have to catch mistakes, errors, once you've put your signature on it, you own it 4. Focus on the outcome, not the process - don't get on the micromanagement train, if the end result gets done, don't worry 5. Be able to delegate - making sure things get done by the right people 6. Don't pretend you know more than you do - ask for help, guidance and others to inform you, people don't want to help a "know-it-all" 7. Theory don't mean sh*t - real education is in the war zone 8. Just say no - don't be afraid to say no 9. Share your vision after you've built a rapport with the team 10. Don't be afraid to open up - don't be afraid to share your struggles, be open and build trust 11. Better get in trouble for things you've did, than things you didn't do - let the higher ups see that you're trying to do something 12. Under-promise and over-deliver 13. Get things in writing - any promises should be noted down 14. Never ask others to do something that you won't do it yourself - be ready to get your hands dirty Can you find the 15th tip?

I work in a school kitchen, I serve about 400+ a day. I am not formally educated, I have a diploma. I am not stupid, nor can I handle traditional college. To me, a leader is someone who gets stuff done, they know what they are talking about and how things operate and can remain calm and dictate order when chaos reigns

When I am training anybody who works under my management, I train them as if I am training my very own replacement, because ya never know, and why not make sure as many people are prepared for a huge change like an abrupt promotion.

So many great points, realistic and simple yet really important. MY TAKE HOME (1)Don't ask someone to do what you are not willing to (2) Don't pretend to know more than you do!

I agree with everything, but the last one. This is the issue we’re having at my new job right now. There’s a huge difference between being willing to do something and being qualified to do something.
