A popular and probably correct theory is that Melanie opted for a sperm donor rather than a partner to conceive. Otherwise why would Melanie not save Alex’s father from the Freeze? Even if a divorce or had taken place you don’t leave your daughters father to die and traumatise your child like that. So either it was a sperm donor or her father died pre-Freeze.
