Something has happened to me since i moved to England from California and wondered if you have the same experience? I have lived here now for 2 years, and my work week has changed from 63 hrs p/w to 39, so i have a lot more free time and am much less stressed, not only that but so is everybody else, i can phone almost anybody to go out for a pint and no'one ever refuses people are never to tired or to stressed or to broke, it is great no'one cares about what you drive or how you live (as long as you get your round of drinks in), one of the people i drink with is a millionaire and i did not even know, i am a butcher and have been drinking with him for months!! No one cares as it is no ones business, being free from the restraints of working long hours and the whole "keeping up with neighbors" in my opinion is REAL FREEDOM, i think maybe true freedom, people are so real here, conversations are more personal, people tend to not speak if they have nothing to say, and nobody shouts, yes i miss my family but the Uk feels like home to me, like visiting grandma's house. Thanks for the video. It was heart warming

Where are you living in the UK? Some of the stuff you mentioned varies according to the area in which you live. But generally, you're correct. People don't usually care about job titles or earnings or material possessions, but they do care if you're interesting and have a good sense of humour. I've had some friends for years and I still don't know what job they do or how rich they are because that type of stuff is on a need-to-know basis

@LMNOP999 Newcastle Upon Tyne, I love it here, i am sure people "take the piss" but I can hardly understand them so it is OK, but no seriously I love the people here, my wife and I drive all over on a weekend and no matter what small country pub we inevitably up in, we always meet some.really interesting people and have never once felt like a foreigner more like a neighbor, people are so warm and generous with there time as no'one ever seems to be in a rush

@@andymac900 Piss-taking means they like your company and feel comfortable around you, strangely enough. Although, there is a fine line between taking the piss and insulting someone, which can be difficult to decifer even for native Brits. Newcastle is a great choice, Geordies are good natured people. Glad to hear that you're enjoying the UK!

@@Holly-lv3fr Yes well you are living in one of the most inventive nations in the world. James Watt steam engine to Penicillin and televisions and the Telephone all invented by Scots. Try googling Scottish inventors and you have literally papers and pages of our nation’s inventiveness. Only problem is that when we are winners we’re always British and Scottish if we lose 😂😂😂. Any I live in England so I am a traitor myself 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️. In the long run though nationalist thinking will destroy us humans we all live on Earth and it would be a great place if the was just one country called Earth - maybe then we could drop our flag waving and be altruistic about humanity which would give us a better chance of being around a lot longer. Only problem is Scotland is not big enough for everyone to live in the most beautiful place on the planet 🥰🥰😂😂😂😂

On the topic of food, I live in Canada and have the same experience when I travel to Europe in general. My son, who cannot eat wheat or dairy in N. America recently went to Wales for university for a year. He could eat ANYTHING! He felt so much better and actually attained a healthy weight which is tough for him here. I have even had medical professionals acknowledge the food quality in Europe. So yes. It is a thing. Lucky you for providing yourself a much healthier life. ❤

@@SimpleScottishLiving I can remember years ago after my first trip to LA, returning to London Heathrow and being desperate for a plain tuna salad, no dressing lol. My indulgent side had loved the food in the USA and the massive portions but my body was crying out for nutrients it was missing. I must have looked like a crazed addict consuming that salad at the airport. What it taught me was to seek out the better restaurants when visiting the US and not go with big value fried breakfasts and dinners. I found you can eat perfectly fine in the USA, but the culture of mainstream eateries is definitely aimed at high fat, sugar and carbs, in a way that is much less acceptable here in the UK.

My first visit to Scotland really surprised me. The restaurant food was amazing. Sticky Toffee Pudding (shout out to Village Inn @ Bridge of Earn) and Steak Pies are a treat. The grocery stores felt bare compared to the choices we have here - especially the produce departments, but we made do. I was able to make delicious meals - and even my beloved Mexican food. I also noticed that I felt less bloated when I was over there. I'm heading back again for my first holiday season in Scotland. Really looking forward to it! Thank you for your videos. First time watching the channel and loved the video. I'm based in Stirling having moved up from England seven years ago and even I've had a little bit of a culture shock (in a good way). There is definitely a far more supportive and community feel in most of Scotland to down in southern England. One thing that may come as a bit of a shock to the system is just our dark our winters get. It's quite common for people around now to go through a bumpy patch with their moods, energy, etc. as they adjust to the days darkening. If you do notice anything like that it's absolutely worth picking up an SAD lamp and getting outside as much as possible on sunny days (though it sounds like you've got that nailed on). Looking forward to watching more on the channel and welcome to Scotland!

Hi guys. I love watching your vids and listening to your experiences of things Scottish and British, not forgetting all the other cultures we have in OUR country.I hope you partook of the Remembrance Day observance. Maybe even watching the Saturday NightFestival and the Cenotaph on Sunday morning. Annie, just to let you know for nexttime that the poppy is worn on the left usually on the lapel. Probably as it's close to the heart I like to think. I always shed a few tears on Remembrance weekend. Zach, try writing to your MP. About joining The Police Force of Scotland. I cannot believe you've been told to wait 3 years with your experience when our Police Forces are short of officers. Being as you were with the CHP, I'd of thought you'd make a cracking traffic cop. Keep up the good work.

Hi, thank you for the kind words. Yes, we all had our poppies on and the kids got to experience a minute silence during rugby practice Sunday which was very special. Good point on the poppy, I'll take the blame for that one 🫣 I appreciate your comments, as I understand the three years is so they can carry out the relevant background/security check, which is understandable.

Hey guys It should be noted that NHS prescriptions are free in Scotland but not free for all in England. In England prescriptions are free for anyone in full time education under 18, of retirement age, pregnant or unemployed. It costs £9.90 per prescription otherwise. Although you can prepay for 3, 6 or 12 months of unlimited prescriptions like I do. There's a big difference in food US v UK. Many channels have done a deep dive into this. Everything from gourmet food to fast food differences. For instance mcdonald's fries have 3 ingredients in the UK V 15 in the US. Which is better I can't say.

I really admire the way you get your family outdoors as much as possible to take advantage of the environment around your new home! I love the Scottish 'guising' tradition- so much more to it than just holding out a candy bucket. I wish that was more of a thing down here in England. Re the quality of food debate- I remember reading some testimony from an American who travelled to the UK for 3-4 weeks every year to visit her partner. As it was a vacation for them, they were eating out a lot, and treating themselves - not thinking about healthy eating at all. However, each time she returned home she found she'd lost a noticeable amount of weight. She could only think it was to do with what was in the food here (or not in the food here). I guess portion size would also be a factor. Interesting to hear your non-partisan thoughts on elections in the two countries. I think that maybe the biggest difference is that our election campaigns proper last 6 weeks only, and so they don't dominate so much of the news for so long as they do in the states. The other difference is that here there are strict limits on the amount that can be spent on an election campaign, and so relatively little time is spent on raising funds, and more time addressing the actual issues at stake. Obviously there is fundraising, but it takes place quietly throughout the year, every year, and not a big push in the run up to the election. Glad you have no regrets about your big move, and intend being here for the long haul.

@@SimpleScottishLivingU.K. politics has been feral since Brexit. It coincided with Trumpism and the Conservatives really have become a GOP-lite clown car of a party. They’ve adopted policies, slogans etc. But it’s really just them and they’re in opposition now and will probably have to come back to the centre to get re-elected. They’ve just doubled down with their new leader but she will never be PM. They’ve seen the GOP do it and think it will work for them as well but it won’t. Great video! I completely agree with you about the food! We were on vacation for two weeks in Cumbria last month (we live in Texas) and we really enjoyed the food, and surprisingly I lost 2 lbs!! So I think your point and quality and preservatives are spot on!

@@SimpleScottishLivingYes, you should maybe not overly use UK too much in Scotland as half of us prefer to use the names of the 4 Nations individually. In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, we do not have a 2 party system. It is only England who have a 2 party system.

@@SimpleScottishLiving actually in the UK general election as a whole it was looking close at one point whether the party that ended up in 2nd place might have come 3rd in the number of seats one. In the end they did slightly better than polls predicted and kept 2nd place but they could so very easily have come 3rd. So it's a media fantasy that it's a 2 party system in the UK. Nothing could be further from the truth.

@@kirsteneasdale5707 They can use whatever they like, both ways would be correct and the UK including Scotland is a free country so they can choose. Not everyone has siloed thinking and focus just on the nation they live in and quite like being part of the UK. Oh by the way, England doesn't just have two parties either

Another really interesting video. Thank you both. I did a similar thing 15 years ago when I left England for good and moved to France (but for the record Zac, although I was raised in Leeds, I was born in Stirling. Like you, I am a Scot, and like you, I have no Scottish accent. I have a Yorkshire accent, even when speaking French!) After my first 6 months in France there were many things that I really missed. As time progressed those feelings faded to the extent that all I really miss now is fish, chips and mushy peas. It is so good to hear that you don't regret your decision to make the move. I would be interested to know if your friends back home, when they visit, tell you are lucky to be able live in Scotland? When friends from the UK visit me they tell me that I am lucky to be able to live in France.

Thank you and I'm glad to hear I'm not alone with the loss of accent! It's funny, I didn't think I missed much when I moved to the US, but coming back had made me appreciate a lot of things so much more! All of our US friends are jealous that we were able to move to Scotland. I know when Annie's friends visited they had a great time!

On the food question, just compare Heinz Ketchup ingredients in the US compared to UK, that will tell you all you need to know! Also, the US healthcare system tends to over treat and over prescribe. This is of course due to it being a money making industry. The NHS treats as necessary and is more efficient by being government funded. Waiting lists here have deteriorated under the last government, but hopefully the new one will improve this.

I suspect the unhealthy food is also related to healthcare. In UK the government has a vested interest in keeping people healthy as it reduces strain on the NHS. In USA the opposite is true, illness is good for business.

What a wonderful family! How on earth I stumbled on this video is down to the machinations of Google. I'm from Hexham, just outside of Newcastle and I was at primary school with lads from Glasgow, Newcastle. Edinburgh, Liverpool and Manchester and even now can happily translate from Scouse to English and vice versa, but it took me a good few minutes to adjust to Zach's accent, while Annie's was immediately clear!! Hybrid Scottish/Bay area accents are hard to pin down! Wish you all the very best of luck and hope you get sorted with work and/or sponsorships very soon, you are both very likable. Zach, I'm amazed that given the fact you were born in Scotland and have the experience and firearms training AND experience that you must have gained in the US, that the plods have not snapped you up? That three year rule seems like insanity given that you were in the US, not the PRC!! Are the Pongo's not even interested or the RMP at Faslane etc?
@SimpleScottishLiving

Thank you so much for your kind comment. I'd like to think that a Scottish/Bay area accent is unique...therefore I'll take it as a compliment 🤣 Yes, the three year rule seems to be a common requirement across a number of fields I've looked at and from what I've read is due to requiring a standard anti-terrorist security/background check.

As a Scot, after 9 years in my 20's living in NYC I married my wife a NJ Dentist and moved to Nashville and had 2 kids. After 4 years we moved back to Scotland 30 years ago, my wife never drilled again. I fully get your first 6 months, but a few key longer term points - our kids went to Glasgow and St Andrews (no fees), they both are married and now have 2 grandkids each (lots of full pay maternity and paternity leave). Scotland offers a great outdoors, but also job opportunities - be patient. Nice thing we have many friends who have come from all job types - they all go on many holidays and have a balanced attitude. In the US the commodity thats in short supply is time, long working weeks, little vacation time and little sick time. Go on enjoy yourself - I can tell you that over 30 years we NEVER thought about returning to the US and maybe even. less now! Cheers

Thank you truly for sharing that, it is inspiring and comforting. We also had many of those longer terms advantages in our mind and are very thankful for them. We have no regrets so far and we really don't foresee any. The kids are still smiling with this chilly weather too! Thank you again and all the best to you and your family.
