Today's video is a recent one!
We're looking at two lovely, young Fell Ponies who were with us for their initial training a couple of years ago. They were supposed to come back to us last year after having the winter off to mature, but with everything going on in the world and with Barry's various surgeries, they never got the chance.
Despite being almost identical (they are actually cousins according to their passports!) they went home to be turned away for two very different reasons and have similarly come back with very different attitudes.
Watch to find out how they get on in their first time back in harness in two years and listen as Barry talks about how they've come back differently to how they went away.
You can also follow the links to see videos we mention about Chas's teething issues and his previous progress as a ride and drive pony.

Thank you so much for telling people about how Sensitive a horse's skin is!! I've heard Instructor's tell people that "Spurs don't Hurt." ~because horses have very thick skin!! As you Know, this is not True!! So, Thank You very Much for Sharing This!!

You can't "cookie cutter" teach children, horses or dogs. Meaning what works for one may not work for another. Another brilliant video barryhook2!! Thank you again for sharing another video with all of us. From Ontario, Canada, Jenn. 💖 💖 🇨🇦 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

Rolley had a gentle but firm way and confident. “Cloud” is a teacher who loves his students. A bit more serious.

Love this one and your talk about the individual personalities. I'm intrigued how the mare knew it was her you were scolding. And how the other two know you were not talking to them. Horses are endlessly fascinating.

Hi Barry, and great to see you back behind the reins in real time, as it were. And what a fabulous, entertaining and educational video this was. No change there, then! This is how it's done, people. This is so how it's done. "If they're not happy, what's the point?"....just a few words speaking such a huge truth. They're all there, in trot, in rhythm and unison, clearly content in their work. I wanted this to go on for another hour at least! And Cloud's impressive quarters, with his tail swinging from side to side like a pendulum...marvellous. Thanks again, Barry and Rea. Xx

Another good one, Barry. Demonstrating the Oh-So-Subtle behaviours that show what a horse is thinking or feeling is pure gold. This is horsemanship. Not just getting the behaviours through training, but showing in real time little things they do that means something. Learning to listen to what the horse is trying to say. What a great language lesson. Thank you.

Thanks for another lovely video. Forgive my ignorance but what are the light colored collars for?
@barryhook2
@barryhook2 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, they neck collars - all our horses and students wear them. Cloud's is a dark leather one so you can't see it as well on this video but he has got one on. They make bridling and tying to walls easier and safer for us and the horses. They are marketed as cattle collars so anyone can buy and use them. Here's a link to some videos about them: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYa3qoimp6eflbs kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKbZo6Cvrq6Xia8 kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWfbh4KLqJh_d8k

Hi Barry. Love your video. Could you talk to us about the history of the different breeds as you work with them. Especially the fell ponies and the breeds that are unique to Britain. I don't know much about fell ponies for instance. You know so much and I love your voice and the clop of hooves.

May I make a suggestion? Instead of writing a how-to book on training, how about a book of cases or different horses in training to illustrate your thinking on educating them? Might be more useful?

@@barryhook2 well, my mother was a book collector who had me reading before first grade; to me, nothing beats a good book. But, as you will!
@barryhook2
@barryhook2 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately Barry does not read or write very well himself (never learnt as a child, but is much better than he ever was now!) so yes a book would be better in some ways, but would be very difficult for him to do.

Its too low or to high. Most probably too low. The horse get uncomfortable and chew a d yank to get it higher. Where it shall lie.

Hi Susan, if you watch our videos on something with headphone compatibility, we've found you can hear Barry's voice over the hoof noise better. Rhi does all the editing on headphones and can hear him no trouble - although maybe that's practice!
